KABUL (SW) – As 3,000 containers of commercial goods of Afghan merchants remain held by Pakistani authorities at the Karachi Port, the traders are slapped with losses of 400,000 dollars per day.

Naqibullah Safi, executive director of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told Salam Watandar: “Pakistan Chamber of Commerce said that they will issue a new letter to release these containers, but this has not been done yet. There are the fines inflicted upon us and we pay a fine of 400,000 dollars per day for the 3,000 containers.”

On the other hand, a number of Afghan merchants whose commercial goods have been stopped at Karachi port say that the stoppage of their goods in Karachi port has caused them huge financial losses. Zalmi, an Afghan businessman whose 30 containers of commercial goods have been stuck in the port of Karachi for more than a month, says that he has lost all his capital during this time.

This Afghan businessman adds: “I pay a fine of at least 1,300 dollars a day, you can calculate how much it will be in a month. A trader loses all his capital by doing this. Trade with Pakistan has become very discredited. No businessman is interested in doing business in Pakistan anymore.”

Similarly, Abdul Baqer, another Afghan businessman, says: “They promised that they will release the containers, but we have not seen the result yet. This problem should be solved as soon as possible because with each passing day, it causes us to go bankrupt.”

However, officials in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce say that Pakistan is working on a specific mechanism to release the containers of commercial goods for the Afghan traders, according to which the containers will be gradually allowed to enter Afghanistan.

Akhundzada Abdusalam Javad, the spokesman of this ministry, told Salaam Watandar: “If they allow all the containers in one place, chaos and problems will arise. For this reason, they are working on a specific mechanism so that 300 or 400 containers are imported daily. That’s why they haven’t moved yet. Maybe this process will start in the coming days.”

Meanwhile, Nuruddin Azizi, Acting Minister of Industry and Commerce, reached an agreement with the officials of this country during his trip to Pakistan last week to release the commercial goods of Afghan merchants from Karachi port.

What benefits is there for Pakistan in this my dear brothers, think about it carefully what benefits will there be in this for Pakistan and the Pakistani citizens?

Especially Karachi port will be the biggest loser in all of this and Gwadar port.

By all means this is a massive own goal in the long term and Pakistanis can´t see thru this and celebrating own goals ´´Oh look we did some damage to some Afghan merchants´´ and trust me they are not the once you should target because they are adding percentages to the Pakistani economy.

If Afghan traders stop using Pakistani ports or stop trading with Pakistan or stop using any transit hubs inside Pakistan? Who will be the loser in this scenario, I want you to sit down and think over this.. Ofcourse Pakistan is the loser in this scenario while the Afghan merchants may take financial losses here and now in the short term but not in the long term it will be the Pakistani economy and Karachi port who will take the losses going forward.

They will move to Bandar Abbas or that new port Iran was building with India will now become a reality as the Afghans will switch their trade simply there for the long term and the Iranians won´t score own goals when it comes to trade or their economy.

Billions of dollars will just move to Chabahar Port or Bandar Abbas and into the Iranian economy plus India will benefit as their corridor will become a thing and they will benefit from connecting their economy to it.

Hi, I wanted to point out in a very gently manner, kindly please look at a map, and visualize the the logistics of shipping something to a Chinese/Russian port and then transporting it from a Chinese or Russian port to Afghanistan. The distance a container would have to travel overland is simply immense, and more importantly it would not make any economic sense.

On a very high level, you have to do the following:
- Get to China/Russia by a container ship.
- Transport via land in China/Russia (the distance is simply immense).
- Transport via land through Central Asia by truck or train.
- Pay customs, tolls, etc at every border crossing.
- If it is a perishable good, you have to factor in refrigeration and cold storage.

Pakistan is the cheapest, fastest route with existing logistics and infrastructure in place. The Pakistani government should use this as leverage.

They will be here for decades if not a century and yes they have better economy then Pakistan currently and more mineral, oil, gas reserves and more rare earth. They can definitely effort other routes like China via Uzbekistan on the cheap and couple their economy entirely to Central Asia and China
