All micro and macro economic indices show that there is a significant portion of the US population that is financially insecure to the point that they are already in poverty, or hovering just above the threshold of being impoverished. Many Americans already live paycheck to paycheck with no savings. Even a short stay in hospital can cause people to be in severe debt for years.
