My work colleagues and I were discussing about this a few days ago . They don’t understand why Pakistanis are not playing football.

I hate to say this, but the majority of Pakistanis seem to ALWAYS concern themselves with things that are UNIMPORTANT and USELESS. The world is moving towards hyper advanced microchip development, AI development and advances in space technology. The ONLY sport the world cares about is football. Despite all of this, Pakistanis are stuck in petty tribal feudalism and SH*T colonial cricket. We need to SERIOUSLY get out of this mindset.

Pakistan, as a country of 250million people should be able to generate good quality footballing talent if they moved in this direction as well as Olympic talent.

It would have to be at grass roots, i.e. schools switch over to football as part of their PE lessons, and local clubs and the sport would have to take off i guess privately in the same way the 1 day matches are privately sponsored in Pakistan now. No point waiting on anything from the government. It would have to take a group of visionaries in Pakistan with some money to shift the needle from what is cricket( i have not seen a cricket match in some 30 years now! ).

I find our 4th generation kids don't even play it much anymore. It's dying among our UK community. They're more into boxing, MMA, football etc.

Cricket is pretty much dead amongst Pakistanis in the uk who are under 20. I've noticed that MMA is big amongst young Pakistanis here in the uk.

What most don't know was that cricket was the loved sport by upper-class english homosexuals during the raj and british colonialism. They were desperate for "native men" to play it.

Yes lost interest in it back in 1999 when thy went out for a miserable 132 runs....Why people waste their time on it I don't know.

Pakistan should invest in Football/Soccer and Karachi's Lyari likely have some very good talent available. But things don't work like that in any country (well, except in North Korea!): People organically adopt and discard their choices in sports, movies, culture etc etc. Cricket, while very popular, was not always this popular in Pakistan. I'd argue it was the field hockey very popular with Pakistan winning major global tournaments. Cricket displaced hockey in Pakistan probably because of the craze generated by Javed Miandad's famous Last Ball Six against India in 1986! Note, field hockey was very popular in Pakistan into the 80s.
BTW, cricketing events generate a lot of revenue in Pakistan as well as in India. And as far as I can tell, India, too, has largely discarded soccer and hockey.
Things have to grow organically unless a society is like North Korea.

Yes, those Sunday leagues have a few Pakistanis who have recently arrived in the uk but they are dominated by indians and sri-lankans.

I used to play in those sunday leagues some 25-30 years ago.

World Cup 2026 is over ( boo! ) and the wait for 2030 begins ( I wish they could do it every 2 years instead - but hey ..).
