Bessent: US Readies Economic Isolation Of Iran "Like The World Has Never Seen Before"

Bessent told Rob Schmitt of Newsmax:

And, you know, at the president's orders, we have raised the level even again, and watch this space for more announcements coming next week because we are going to apply measures like have never been seen in the history of economic isolation on a country. And I think the reason we are succeeding is because it is a one-two punch.

People say, well, you know, Cuba lasted a long time. Venezuela lasted a long time. Venezuela immediately crumbled when we put the blockade on. So, it will be a combination of economic isolation like the world has never seen before and the continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that will keep anything from going in or out of the Iranian ports.

It's called siege warfare. And no, it will not likely be the worst in history.

The Practical Guide to Humanitarian Law

The Most Lethal and Devastating Sieges
    • Siege of Leningrad (1941–1944):
      • Location: Soviet Union (modern-day St. Petersburg, Russia).
      • Casualties: Up to 1.5 million dead.
      • Brutality Factor: Citizens faced extreme winter cold and deliberate starvation. Rations dropped to dangerously low levels. Mass starvation led to widespread desperation and cases of cannibalism.
    • Siege of Baghdad (1258):
      • Location: Iraq.
      • Casualties: Estimates range up to 2 million dead.
      • Brutality Factor: Led by Hulagu Khan, the Mongol forces breached the city and unleashed total destruction. They razed mosques, palaces, and the grand House of Wisdom, executing the caliph and slaughtering the population so completely that the air stank of decay.
    • Siege of Suiyang (757):
      • Location: China.
      • Casualties: Roughly 20,000 to 30,000 soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians.
      • Brutality Factor: During the An Lushan Rebellion, the defenders under General Zhang Xun ran completely out of food. To survive and hold the city, the garrison resorted to systemic cannibalism, consuming civilians, starting with the vulnerable, until the city eventually fell.
    • Siege of Nishapur (1221):
      • Location: Persia (modern-day Iran).
      • Casualties: Hundreds of thousands.
      • Brutality Factor: Ordered by Genghis Khan’s family in revenge for the death of a relative, the Mongols ordered the complete extermination of every living human—and even animals—in the city, stacking pyramids of severed heads.

So, instead of admitting he was wrong for launching an unprovoked attack against Iran, an attack that deliberately included war crimes, and instead of acknowledging his obvious defeat, he doubled down with "sanctions" designed to inflict suffering and death on the civilian population. This after first declaring his intention to "Make Iran Great Again."

Trump simply cannot accept defeat, either at the ballot box or anywhere else. He will continue prosecuting this war even if it means that hundreds of millions of innocent people worldwide will die from starvation and exposure. The welfare of the American people is irrelevant. We are just "suckers and losers," good for cannon fodder and votes. Nothing more.
