Starship Flight 5 Live Thread

StarshipX blew up. Nice explosion mind you. The score card is B- for today.
ever hear of thermal stress? when an extremely hot hollow body is immersed in a cool liquid, the rapid compression causes the ship to implode. No one expected the ship to survive a water landing. Unlike heavily reinforced reentry capsules the Starship is not designed to survive a water landing.

Wow 😮 … simply wow

Reminiscent of the extreme angle the first successful Falcon 9 barge landing recovered from.

Another angle from the beach...look at the crazy slope it does to get to the tower!
That's far from coming straight down that's for sure!

Yeah - saw that on the day. Was surprised how small they were.

It's even crazier than that. I thought it was hooking over some metal lip but it is actually landing on top of the rail like the feet of a gymnast on a balance beam when they do a flip with nothing stopping it from sliding/spinning off.

What Exactly Happened On SpaceX's FIFTH Starship Test Flight!

I don't know what were the wind and weather conditions at the time. If this was a calm sunny day, then it is not as impressive compared to the docking manoeuvers that spacecraft have been doing for decades.

People forget that the issue is not weight but inertia. Objects have the same inertia in space despite being 'weightless' and the space docking manoeuvers are pretty damn impressive in their own right.

The additional complications that the lander will have to face on Earth include atmospheric issues like high winds and other weather phenomena. That will be the impressive part when it lands during high cross winds.

The docking maneuvers spacecraft make have minutes to calculate/complete not mere seconds. Plus they can stop, backup, and try again.

Having the Starship's two little pin "feet" land correctly on that "balance beam" rail in mere seconds was an engineering masterpiece.

Starship flip maneuver!

Liberal Elon Musk hater watching the Starship launch so he could trash the Starship program over his expected landing crash.
