Starship Flight 5 Live Thread

"Houston - we have a problem"

(holes in the flap from burnthrough and there are alot of sparks - possible tile dislocated ? ).

This is insane level of engineering. Sci-Fi becoming real.

The test is a success on many counts as numerous flight parameters are met.

Landed and then exploded ... oh dear!

That Starship landing in the water doesn't matter because it will also eventually come back to the tower and be caught just like the booster. Last time the booster landed in the water and exploded. They are just trying to see if they can get the Starship back in one piece to a designated spot before attempting a tower landing. In the previous test the Starship ended up almost 5 miles from the expected landing site due to all the damage and there was no footage from the ocean-based cameras. This time the Starship landed right infront of the floating cameras. Obviously their fixes improved things drastically.

Floating camera footage from the expected ocean landing spot.

They will just re-engineer any places with tile burn through and eventually attempt a tower landing.

The water landings are just testing the precision of the Starship to get to a specific landing spot.

Will watch the highlights on youtube in a bit.
Yeah do that. I still clearly remember how you were hating on the old forum and made fun of the failed launch. I bet you were glued to the screen today hoping for another fail, sucka. Bet you're super pissed right now haha you prolly mad as shiat banging your head lol

StarshipX blew up. Nice explosion mind you. The score card is B- for today. You would have gotten an A, if StarshipX did not blow up after the landing. If we have to wait a bit longer for SpaceX to work that out - i dont mind - there is something quite entertaining about a rocketship explosion until they get there.

Déjà vu of a previous crazy engineering idea

Certainly Adam Steltzner at NASA took a lot of flak for authorizing a skycrane to land the Mars rovers which was a landing engineering strategy people thought was completely ridiculous, risky, and many thought had a small chance of actually working...but it worked...shutting up his legions of naysayers.

Adam Steltzner took a lot of sh*t from people saying the Mars rovers were doomed to fail due to the landing choice he made.

Rep Kevin Kiley asking the FAA why the Biden administration is stonewalling SpaceX Starship launches with rep tape

Again this is all moot as the DoD will now waiver SpaceX from any future FAA compliance.

This week, the California Coastal Commission rejected a request from the Air Force for additional launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base. It is not because the military agency did not need the launches. It was not because the nation and the community would not benefit from them. Rather, it was reportedly because, according to one commissioner, Musk has “aggressively injected himself into the presidential race.”
Musk’s SpaceX is becoming a critical part of national security programs. It will even be launching a rescue mission for two astronauts stranded in space. The advances of SpaceX under Musk are legendary. The Air Force wanted to waive the requirement for separate permits for SpaceX in carrying out these critical missions.
To the disappointment of many, SpaceX is now valued at over $200 billion and just signed a new $1 billion contract with NASA.

LOL! Sorry it was not perfect. So far every other Space agency in the world scores an F compared to the rocket tech SpaceX has. Even the most powerful rocket the Chinese have is only slightly more powerful than a Falcon 9. Not the Falcon Heavy nor the Starship.

Plus they can't even master how to land and SpaceX is approaching their 10 year 1st landing anniversary (having landed over 350 times since saving an insane amount of money).

Great job by SpaceX team.
Looks so easy when its a succes but its incredibly hard thing to do.

Starship achieved controlled descent and landed in the target area. There was some burnthrough but it didn’t effect the controlled reentry like last time. The heat shield was a huge improvement this time.

With Starship conducting a successful land and Super Heavy caught by Mechazilla this was a near perfect test flight.

I bet they'll do 1 more ocean test to make sure they have solved the tile issue and then they will try the tower landing. This successful test will allow them to have all future flights green-lighted immediately. The launches are going to get far more frequent now.
