$6.7b oil facility sought from Saudi

Imagine if Saudis pulls the plug. 12 billions of remittances, 8 billions cash deposit will evaporate in thin air. The economy will crumble. In fact, they are keeping the country afloat.

Dependence of one source upto this extent is insanely wild. We must learn to live within our means and earn respect.

That is why all agreements were dollar backed. No patriot would allow such ruthless resource and wealth extractions, but these three classes politicians, judges and bureaucrats are literally siphoning of wealth.
And signed in UK, no jurisdiction of Pakistan govt.

The more things change, the more they stay the same it seems. More loans, more cheap loans, more grace periods on payment of loans.. More requests for forgiveness of previous loans, more requests for loans to become aid ...

Pakistan Govt beats the investor in taking loans. Let's say a business will take a loan only at 10%, but the govt is desperate to take a loan at 15% (from local banks)

That is what happens when you don't export your goods and don't have an industrial base. Pakistan’s sole life line are remittances.

If Pakistan is paying for it's military deployments to Saudi right now, this may in effect be the repayement, a $6.7 Billion facility that always gets rolled over is the closest thing to free cash you can get
I remember seeing Diesel climb to 521 rupees a liter - it has come down since then but let people digest that for a moment.

Cannot build industry with electricity prices that are double that of India/Bangladesh.

But thats changing and in few years electricity rates will be competitive and may even become cheaper then region by 2030.

I think 2030's will be decade of Pakistan industrial expansion.

Absolutely. All things to consider for the leaders of this country.

When it comes to business, Pakistan's economy hasn't grown organically. Successive governments have tried to give it a push but they haven't been able to kick start.

Ok, this has a lot to do with Afghanistan though our policy makers can't get away without having their fair share.

See it may sound weird but we are fortunate to have a neighbors like India and unfortunate to have a neighbor like Afghanistan. We don't let India to excel in any field therefore we pull out the best within ourselves.

About Afghanistan what we invariably get from from them is terrorism, Guns and drugs. Pakistan is stuck in this web and has been tagged as a country with whom business/investment can't be done. What we are left with are loans and reremittances. Further, whatever we have is we lack in capacity. Cotton the most precious item in our bag is doomed. From 12 million bales we are down to 5 5 millions. India on the other hand has jumped from 12 to 35 million bales.

Law and order, radicalism and uncontrolled population growth are the the major hurdles in out growth.

Wake up Pakistan...you can do it

That unfortunately is the harsh truth. We are also not blessed with capable leaders.

If you have a stomach, watch these. A boom-bust cycle and a consumer-led economy. We are at the moment relying on remittances and new debts. If Saudi can offer a cheaper loan, we should immediately pay off the expensive loan.

Pakistan's economy will stay trapped in a cycle of imports and remittances until its leaders change their priorities. Growth requires deep investment in human capital and a strong industrial base. Even agriculture, traditionally Pakistan's strong suit, is lagging due to a lack of innovation. If the leadership doesn't wake up and prioritise the economy, the country will remain stuck in a slumber.

The population isn't considered human capital in Pakistan. That mindset has to change. First, learn to prioritise your main asset, the people. Educate them by providing equal education. When you have one set of quality education for the rich and the public schools are in ruins, what can one expect?

@hydrabadi_arab

Hydra bro,

Absolutely correct. Cheap RE and storage will be great equailisers across the world. Pakistan in fact will be a beneficiary because it has immense amount of solar and wind resources at close proximity to end users. Also unlike EU/IND/JPN etc which will try to protect domestic solar/storage industries from Chinese competition, PAK will be under no such compulsion and they will benefit from lower energy prices relative to peers.

But cheap energy while necessary will not be sufficient for the next industrial revolution. PAK must invest in human resources development as well.

Regards
