A-5III (Q-5III / A-5C “Fantan”) is the improved export version of China’s Nanchang Q-5, designed mainly for low-level high-speed attacks on ground targets.

Its primary role is ground attack and close air support (CAS), with secondary duties in tactical strike and light attack bombing, plus limited self-defense capability using short-range air-to-air missiles.

Deliveries of the A-5C began in early 1983 (first aircraft arrived at PAF Base Rafiqui in February 1983). It served primarily with Nos. 7, 16, and 26 Squadrons in the ground-attack role until final retirement in 2011 (replaced by the JF-17 Thunder).
