Taliban contest UN report on malnourished women, children

KABUL: Afghanistan’s Taliban government said on Saturday its goal was “to help all malnourished children and mothers”, after the United Nations warned that millions would experience acute malnutrition this year.

The World Food Programme’s Afghanistan director John Aylieff said this week that five million women and children would experience life-threatening malnutrition in a worsening crisis in the country of 40 million people.

The United Nations agency has said that nearly four million children would require treatment for malnutrition, a figure also supported by the UN-mandated Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. “These numbers are staggering,” said Aylieff.

The Afghan public health ministry gave lower figures on Saturday, saying that there were “around three million children and mothers suffering from malnutrition”.

“About 1.3 million children are moderately malnourished, 700,000 suffer from acute malnutrition and 900,000 mothers are moderately to severely malnourished,” ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said.

The ministry said the number of facilities offering treatment for malnutrition had grown from “800 to 3,200”.

“Our goal is to reach all patients... and help all malnourished women and children,” Zaman said.

“We must distribute medicines, food and assistance with the help of international organisations,” he said, while also highlighting Afghanistan’s efforts “to produce the necessary resources internally”.

The WFP is seeking $390 million in an urgent appeal to feed six million Afghans over the next six months, although Aylieff described the chances of getting the funds as “bleak” after aid donations were slashed in recent years.

this is no way to live. very sad for the women who are oppressed by the barbarian Taliban regime.

Freaking retards, and worse part is that we have people in Pakistan, and Pakistani's living western countries support that life style, where women are treated worse than animals, and they try to present it as "Islam" when its nothing but their culture.

Even by the lows of the lows of Afghanistan and feudal tribal Pakistan, this is rather the lowest. Beautiful people living in a beautiful four-seaons region in both Afghanistan and the northwest of Pakistan. But 'culture'?? No, blame it on the Americans or General Musharraf, right!! The 'culture' is basically trying to make roses out of cactus trees and in failing to achieve that, as it should have failed, burning the grass around it.

They don't care brother, they don't follow Islam properly and what you see is a mix of tribalism, superstition, some Islam and oppression.
I feel for the poor women and kids.

The same like Catholic Philippine where the women cannot get divorced despite being abused by her husband

Afghanistan is under a hostile take over by the radical ethno-fascist Pushtoon's, they never let other racial groups to lead or give them any significance, for as long that country is held hostage by the radical pushtoon majority by the barrel of a gun nothing will change in Afghanistan. We see similar situation in KPK as well, KPK is basically like a mini Afghanistan, the only difference is that Pakistan has a strong military that fight back against them, remember they took the whole SWAT and Malakand division when Govt give them an inch they took a mile, if its up to them we will all be living in stone age, while their so called leaders and people treat women/girls like goats & sheep, but the men are busy in r@ping male kids (Bacha bazi), drug smuggling and all other kinds of criminal activities.

Afghan women nearly four times less likely to access justice: UN report

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has said that new findings by the United Nations (UN) indicate Afghan women are nearly four times less likely than men to have access to formal justice mechanisms.

Marking International Women’s Day (IWD) today, 8 March, UNAMA in a statement said the new findings highlight a widening justice gap that is leaving many women without safe avenues to assert their rights, seek protection, or challenge abuse.

UN Women Special Representative, Susan Ferguson, said access to justice is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of women’s safety and dignity.

According to the findings, only 14 percent of women consulted reported having access to formal dispute-resolution services, compared to 53 percent of men.

UNAMA added that reliance on informal dispute-resolution mechanisms — such as local jirgas and community councils traditionally dominated by male elders — has further restricted women’s ability to pursue justice and protect their rights.

The global theme for International Women’s Day 2026 — ‘Rights, Justice, Action. For All Women and Girls’ — calls for action to dismantle all barriers to equal justice, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and harmful practices and social norms that undermine the rights of women and girls.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has not yet commented on the report, but officials have previously stated that women’s rights are ensured in accordance with the framework of Islamic Sharia.

Karzai urges Taliban to reopen schools and universities to girls

KABUL (Amu tv): In a message on International Women’s Day, former President Hamid Karzai called on the Taliban to take swift action to reopen schools and universities to girls and allow women to return to work.

He praised the role women have played in the country’s development, saying they have stood alongside men during many stages of Afghanistan’s social and economic progress.

Karzai said meeting the country’s basic needs and achieving long-term development requires the participation of women across different sectors of society.

“To achieve progress and prosperity, the doors of schools and universities must be reopened to girls as soon as possible, and conditions should be created for women to play an active role in society,” he said.

He added that Afghanistan could achieve growth by relying on the abilities and talents of its citizens and reducing dependence on outside support.

The appeal comes as the Taliban continue to enforce sweeping restrictions on women and girls.

Girls are barred from attending secondary schools and universities, and women are largely prohibited from working in nongovernmental organizations, including those linked to the United Nations. Women are also banned from pursuing medical studies.
