Torment of Afghan fathers as daughters deprived of education

KABUL (AFP) : Father after father AFP spoke to in Afghanistan about the education ban that stops their daughters going beyond primary school choked up in despair.

The pain and anguish it is causing behind closed doors is clear from interviews AFP conducted across the country, with even deeply religious fathers questioning the ruling.

The Taliban authorities justify the ban — the only one of its kind in the world — on their interpretation of Islamic law.

But “you will never find in the Qur’an that education is only for men,” said one devout father, while another — who praised the Taliban government for restoring security and reducing corruption — said he couldn’t “find any proper justification for this.”

All the men — whose identities AFP is protecting — described the emotional turmoil the bar is causing, with fathers losing sleep over what to do to help their bright and frustrated daughters.

Nine out of 10 Afghan men questioned in a UN survey last year said it was important for girls to go to secondary school, with nearly two thirds considering it “pious” for a father to support his daughter’s education.

Some men have gone to prison for protesting the ban.

Girls were barred from secondary schools in March 2022 after the Taliban authorities returned to power, with universities closed to young women later that year.

The Taliban government did not respond to AFP questions about the ban.

Officials insist the ban is temporary. But after more than four years, the UN reckons “at least one million girls have been directly affected by the restrictions on secondary education.”

See I don't mind the indigenious people, tribes, in fact i believe that if evolve and be on right track these Tribals can contribute a lot to the society, just to give an example Pakistan's Tribal belt is beautiful and the locals have a simplicitic culture, but they are living in that weird era where their tribal system has kept them from evolving like everyone else, If you talk to your parents, or grandparents you will realize their mindset was so different than ours or how future generations mindset will be different than ours, In tribal systems they just refused to change, violence still is glorified as some manly ritual, Tribalistic mentality and tribe loyalty over Islam or country stand supereme, everyone else is inferior or systems govt creates or Laws other countries builds are inferior to them, that mindset along with wide spread mysogny in the tribal areas and extension of Afghan kills that society slowly, its a cycle Afghans refused to break and unfortunately Pakistani's areas are following the same path to no avail but death and destruction, we have come to a Point where Taliban can blow up 10 schools in a month and you will not hear a peep from our people from that area, but moment govt conduct a IBO all hell break lose.

Primitive societies prey on their weak which are women the disabled and children.

Afghans rape and sell their children and treat their women like caged animals and hide them under black tents in public, psychological torture, you have no face, no voice and no personality in public. You are my possession.

What makes these c**ts so unique is they actually think they are the main character chosen one and have a divine right to bastardize a deeply spiritual and consciously self aware faith to fit their tribal degeneracies and primal urges.

Idiotic to prevent girls from getting educated.

Saudi Arabia should teach these idiot Afghanistanis that women needs to be educated.

Afghans lost their final chance for a better future when Americans left, with American and ISAF forces in Afghanistan, there was unlimited resources, Access to American/EU markets, and lots of business that couldve transformed Afghanistan, but they stab Americans/Pakistan/EU in the back, and take money from India to keep this fire of hate burning, and after the Taliban took power they did what was expected. Some nations are better off extinct. Afghanistan will always be a divided violent and drug infested nation, which will keep fighting someone one way or another, they just can't help themselves.
World is aiming for Moon and Mars, Pakistan sending its astronauts in Space, and these idiots are still mutilating bodies, putting women in cages, and making them wear that letter box burqa, selling their daughters and r@ping children aka Bacha bazi, there is no redeming quality in these people.

Bro, even a chimpanzee in the jungle is more intelligent and has better problem-solving skills than an afghan.

I agree with your larger point, but Saudi Arabia is hardly a shining example to emulate when it comes to women's rights.

Iran, Pakistan and several other Muslim countries are better examples.

Afghan women tell the BBC their lives are unrecognisable after five years of Taliban rule

Five years on from the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, women and girls have told the BBC their lives are unrecognisable under the rule of the regime.

The hard-line Islamist group has been eroding the rights of the 22 million women in the country since it re-gained control in 2021- two decades after being removed from power by a US-led military coalition.

The BBC is one of the few media organisations that has been able to maintain access to Afghanistan since the takeover. We spoke to women across the country, from the heart of Kabul to the vast countryside.

They have watched on as the Taliban barred access to school for girls over 12, restricted travel without a male chaperone and brought in a law implying legal approval for child marriage.

When questioned by BBC Afghan over the constraints that women face, the Taliban's foreign minister said: "Women are not totally restricted on all walks of life".

But the restrictions impact almost every part of their lives and make it difficult to tell their stories. Many of the women have not used their real names because they fear reprisals.

"People are so overwhelmed by poverty and daily hardships that many have been forced to put their education, dreams, and hopes for the future aside," Ela from Kabul said.

"Today, survival has become the priority, and many of us no longer have the time or energy to think about the future."

Only 7% of women in Afghanistan are employed, after being banned from many workplaces and fields of study, the United Nations says.

News anchor Zuhal was pushed out of her job after a series of Taliban orders.

"I was very passionate about my work and did it with love. Every time I sat in front of the camera and read the news, I felt proud and happy... it was part of my identity and life.

"The days when I used to wake up to the sound of my alarm clock and get ready to watch TV have now become days when I wake up in the morning knowing that I have to spend the whole day at home."

The Taliban has resumed the public implementation of corporal punishments, with official records saying hundreds of people have been flogged since 2021 - but the true figure is likely much higher.

Shaima told the BBC she was whipped 50 times, leaving her body badly scarred and her whole family traumatised.

"They brought a paper and forced me to confess that: 'Yes, I am an apostate woman. I am collaborating with infidels and have spoken with unrelated men'.

"They hit me so hard that my head would bend toward the ground.
"Around 200 local people had gathered, including men, boys, and children. All of them were male. I was required to say out loud that I repented."

Shaima said her eldest daughter now wakes up frightened almost every night and asks her "Mother, they are beating you," or "Mother, they are killing you".

"That is what causes me the greatest pain," she added.

Manizha was publicly lashed 39 times over her friendship with a man, and then jailed.

"We wanted to get married, but unfortunately we were arrested. I do not know how the Taliban intelligence found out, or whether someone reported us.

"In prison, I experienced things that I have never even told my mother. I had no desire to continue living. I used to say that the first thing I would do after getting out of prison would be to take my own life.
