After Armenia, India has also exported Akash Air Defence System — an indigenously designed surface-to-air missile (SAM) developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), to two central Asian countries Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed on Thursday.
He also indicated more orders are expected from other countries as well for the Akash Missile Air Defence System, designed to track multiple targets such as fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, guided munitions, and UAVs at short to medium ranges simultaneously using passive and active radars.
“Akash, I would say that it is one of our success stories. It shows the maturing of our indigenous missile design and production system. It is effective in dealing with high-velocity aerial targets,” the defence secretary said.
“The first customer was Armenia, which has taken multiple batteries. Thereafter, we’ve also exported it to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan,” he confirmed.
According to him, production of the AD system has stabilised. Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) are the two main production partners of the DRDO for this project.
We have additional orders for our own services, and I’m sure there will be many more from various parts of the world, Singh stated. @Nimble
