When an institution has built what is effectively a $100 billion economic empire, entrenched itself in politics, and accumulated enormous privileges, it becomes legitimate to ask where its institutional loyalties ultimately lie....... Because from where we are sitting, Pakistan and its bloody civilians seem to come second, protecting that empire takes precedence...

The system has increasingly become mafia like:........ join the gang, fight and kill your way up the ladder, and if you survive long enough, become the boss and enjoy the unlimited perks....... That's not how a professional defence force operates....

I partially agree with you on not to 'absolve the jurnails of their crimes (including patronizing the very snakes who have now come back to bite us)'. However, let's not forget times change and so do their requirements. Many of these snakes were indeed needed for handling strategic challenges. It's more like choosing the lesser evil. That time has long over. It's time to smash the head of these snakes.

Also, It's much worse than 'The system has increasingly become mafia like'. The system has a stranglehold by mafias and is certainly choking. It's encouraging that the state has now decided to break that stranglehold. The elite, corruption, smuggling, narco, and terrorism are all deeply interlinked. The state tries to crack down any one of those evils, all of them get united against the state. Already have enough retreat by the state.

Let's hope these mafias are targeted and dismantled by the state. Any goon who can gather a few thousand people must not be able to blackmail the state. Even further, let's hope the external actors who are supporting, using, and controlling these mafias will be taken head on.

ere are reasons for the sudden spike in terrorism in Balochsitan and KPK. Pakistan has stopped or significantly reduced the cross border smuggling with Afghanistan and Iran.
