Musk Declares Starship Heat Shield Problem Solved After Flight 13

Elon Musk has declared one of Starship's most stubborn engineering problems officially behind SpaceX. Speaking during the company's earnings call on August 4, 2026, the CEO said data and visual inspections from the latest test flight leave no doubt: the heat shield works. It is a milestone the program has been chasing for more than three years, and it removes what many outside observers considered the single biggest technical barrier standing between Starship and true rapid reusability.

“I don't want to jinx it or anything, but I think I would call the heat shield problem solved at this point,” Musk said. “All indications from data and visual inspection is we have solved it. That doesn't mean we won't make improvement, but we do not see any technical obstacles.”

If he catches that second stage on the tower is is going to be insanity time for the US Space program. I expect a row of towers to be built..back to the old days.
