An Adani project will put India on global maritime map

The Arctic Sea Route is only navigable during certain months of the year due to ice conditions. Even with melting ice, the route is not accessible year-round, making it less reliable than the Malacca Strait, which is navigable throughout the year. The NSR lacks the extensive infrastructure present along traditional routes. Ports, refueling stations, and rescue services are minimal compared to those available along the Malacca Strait and Suez Canal. The costs associated with icebreaker escorts, insurance, and potential delays due to weather conditions can offset these savings.

China’s woes here is that it does not have easy alternatives to Malacca. The nearby Sunda Strait (adjoining Indonesia) is difficult to navigate due to a strong tidal current and a minimum depth of only 20 meters in parts of its northeastern end.

The Lombok/Makassar Strait in the region is a longer route, which can increase shipping costs. That is why it is said that, for now, the Malacca Strait route remains irreplaceable for China.
Wrong there's a proposed Thai canal as an alternative to Malacca strait. 2.8 billion dollar project it will most likely be built by China. 1725022389858.png

Thailand risks dividing itself. The country already has an active insurgency in its southern provinces, which are mostly Muslim and Malay. The canal could end up symbolizing a split between northern Thailand and the separatist movement in the south. While it might not stop the military's efforts to combat the insurgency, it could create a lasting divide. Once the channels have been dug out, they would be impossible to fill in, and if Thailand were ever to break in two, the Thai canal could be the fault along which it cracks.

This canal would create economic opportunities that would outweigh any other negative factors.

China’s BRI has caused problems for many of India’s neighbors and African countries. The same could happen to Southeast Asian countries. China usually invests money only if it benefits them directly.

Lmao southeast Asia largest trading partner is china. And I'm sorry bri is a land bridge to connect china to the the rest of Eurasia just because some countries are struggling financially doesn't mean it's china fault. Chinese lending rate is much lower than that of the imf. Trade between china to global South has increased many folds in the past decade that means the BRI has worked as intended to increase more trade flows among countries in Eurasia. There are many factors at played here like COVID, feds rates hike and slow down in global economy and wars have affected many countries in the global South even Europe is in a recession. Can't blame it on china when u can't get things in order.

The centre has notified the international trans-shipment hub at Galathea Bay in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as a 'Major Port'. With this, the proposed Rs 44,000 crore mega project is officially under the administrative control of the union ports, shipping, and waterways ministry. It is also eligible for central funding and will be developed under the public-private partnership model.

Unlikely to compete with Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas port from Malaysia.

Just use logic here, most of goods comes from China, so which one is closer Singapore/Malaysia or India to the ASEAN market ? Which one is closer to ASEAN ports, Singapore/Malaysia or India if we are talking ASEAN export ? Most of ASEAN trade is also going to East Asia which is located in the East, opposite to where India is

Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia is a hub for ASEAN goods exported every where and China goods exporting to ASEAN and also intra ASEAN trades. ASEAN trade volume is much larger than total Indian trade volume.

More likely India new port is a direct challenge to Sri lankan port that serve South Asian market

It eliminates the need for the Sri Lankan port

What will be the point of this canal ? You will be heading directly into Indian naval bases on the Andaman & Nicobar islands

What makes Sri Lanka become Hub for South Asia ? I guees the same like Singapore, it had already become hub since British colonization right.....

India itself is a big consumption engine. At scale the Adani port cuts cost of travel as well as access to the fastest growing economy in the world. Singapore and Indonesia etc. Singapore made money through transit port faciltiies which are no longer required when Ports like Adani are coming up. Adani ports provide best in class berthing, cargo transfer as well as customs clearence for India.

Big ships can offload part of their cargo in India and directly tpoceed to China etc. Singapore became rich only due to the inefficiency of india and China. Now that those policis are corrected no one needs them. Singapore can refocus on fishing etc.

I never understood the case for shipping hubs. I understand them. I never understand how it makes a country rich in itself.

In that sense Sri Lanka Hambantota port was a lemon sold by the Chinese

Shipping hub can industrialize the nation further. Manufacturer see it as good location as their manufacturing hub. Singapore is the highest FDI recipient in South East Asia, it is despite it is only small island with much less people
