Big news. Parliament officially informed that formal discussions are on. I guess france wants to combine rafale and fcas into one mega collaboration on development, research and production. India will obviously have to expense 10s of billions over the years. Good deal nonetheless. But historically trouble has been that india is extractive on tech. Lets see.

Really ? I thought it is the French who have this reputation. It's why the French-German collaboration on next fighter jet failed.

I guess culture may be as big an obstacle in this project as costs and technical challenges.

So India will say For let's say 10 billion
We want full knowledge and ToT for the engine, advanced avionics, missiles etc etc


And France will be like "noooooooo"
For 10 billion
India gets to buy the aircraft,
India may get some work share
Or maybe even the ability to assemble at a site in India
But core components like Engine, avionics or whatever are French owned and restricted

Then you go back and forth for a few decades

Neither rafale nor mirage collabs failed_ ultimately both sides will compromise. I think all jets and engines put together india will make a deal so massive, it might make it worthwhole for the french to compromise. I think that is what is happening - 10s of billions in rafale, 10s of billions in this, helo engines, maybe add some ships or something. Enough to make them ok with a deal thatll keep their industry funded for decades.

Maybe this thread can remain if they rename it to "India begins efforts to buy French-led sixth-generation fighter jet"

Ideally, this should have been posted in the IAF News thread - as there is no discussion on something that does not as yet exist in any shape ( this new is as "real" as the Rafale procurement talks which are still in the early paper shuffling stage .... ).

Fcas is 6th gen. Kaam is about 5th gen

What does 6th gen mean and in what ways is it different from 5th gen? Besides the variable cycle engine and better (higher bandwidth) datalinks to control drones, what other differences are there.

There is already a plan to put a variable cycle engine in the F-35 as well as improve electrical power to power more capable datalinks.

The KAAN could have something similar with its two planned 35,000 lb engines. FCAS project quotes 12 ton engines planned; two 26,500 lb engines.
