The bank account given by the abductors was under the name of Ahmed Imtiaj Riyad. According to his Facebook profile, he was a former BCL leader in Rangamati,’ said Khagrachari additional superintendent of police Md Tafiqul Alam.

They are yet to confirm the matter, he said, adding that they are investigating the incident.

Earlier, it was revealed that three Bengalis, a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party and two Awami League leaders were behind Mohammad Mamun’s murder, which led to sectarian attacks on national minority houses and businesses at Dighinala in Khagrachari on September 19.

The violence spread to Khagarachari Sadar in the evening and in Rangamati on September 20. The violence killed four national minority people in the two hill districts.

One of the victims filed a case against eight unidentified persons regarding the abduction incident, Dighinala police officer-in-charge Mohammad Zakaria said, adding that no one has been arrested yet.

Rangamati deputy commissioner on Tuesday announced that the tourist centres at Sajek would remain closed and no tourist would be allowed to Sajek in order to avoid any untoward situation for the next three days beginning from Wednesday.

SM Nahed Uzzaman and Mamun Fakir, both residents of Nagarkanda upazila in Faridpur and their car driver were abducted by unidentified miscreants when they were going to Khagrachari from Sajek in Rangmati district in their car on Tuesday morning.

The abductors took away their mobile phones and national identity cards, beat them and demanded Tk 50 lakh in ransom.

At one stage, they agreed to accept Tk 20 lakh and called one of their relatives, they said.

Then the victims’ family members contacted Khagrachari district superintendent of police Arefin Jewel who talked to one of the victims.

As suspected - Awami League goons are trying to incite ethnic violence in CHT.

Yesterday, 3 tourists in Khagrachari were abducted and later recovered. It is being alleged that kidnappers are local Awami league leader. Their objective was most likely to portray it as an abduction by the Tribal community and stir up new violence in an already sensitive region.

Entire Awami league must be declared as enemy of the state...
The armed forces of Bangladesh is very lenient and soft towards the general tribal population. If it was the Chinese, Israeli, French or American army dealing with the tribals, I believe they would not have gotten the chance to even stage protests in the streets let alone call for independence. Other armies are very aggressive compared to Bangladesh’s military.

Kapatai damn should not have been built IMHO. What happened to Chakma people is simply inhumane and extreme injustice.
Having said that this should be settled by higher Govt and Military official meeting senior Chakma tribal members.
It is time to think to call Chatro League what it really is, a “Terrorist Organization”.

Kaptai dam should be demolished. It only produces a small amount of electricity and has a huge impact on the environment.

Two KNF members detained in military operation in Bandarban

Two members of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) have been detained during a military operation in the Keplongpara area of Ruma upazila, Bandarban.

The two are Van Mun Lam Bom, 42 and Philip Khiang, 36, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate press release issued on Monday.

According to the ISPR, acting on intelligence reports, a Bangladesh Army conducted a special operation against KNF members in the Keplongpara area.

The team surrounded a KNF hideout and successfully apprehended the two individuals as they attempted to flee the scene.

The detained KNF members are reported to have been actively involved in terrorist activities targeting local communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, as well as armed operations against law enforcement agencies.

For the past 18 months, the Bangladesh Army has been conducting operations in various areas of Ruma upazila to ensure the safety and security of local residents against the KNF.

The long-standing KNF conflict has led to the displacement of many individuals from the Bom community.

On Wednesday, with the assistance of the military, 26 members of 10 families from Baklai Bom Para in Ruma and Thanchi Upazila’s border area of Remakri Prangsa Union returned to their homes after a ten-month displacement.

***Unverified social media report*** - The original post is no longer available, so take this post with high degree of skepticism.

A social media post from a CHT insurgent has gone viral in Bangladesh where the insurgent is boasting about the ammunition they received.

Netizens have pointed out that one of the one of the ammo boxes had the label of Ammunition Factory Khadki in India - implying Indian government's direct support to these insurgent groups.

For historical context -

Indian government did in fact support these groups in 80s, as acknowledged by the rebel spokesperson in the 80s (refer to the article below). Therefore, it is not a surprise to most Bangladeshis that it is possible that Indian government is still involved in supporting these elements. However, if evidence is found of Indian Government's ordnance factory made ammunition reaching Bangladeshi insurgents, it will be another blow to an already fragile Bangladesh-India relation.

For more than a decade, India has secretly provided arms and money to tribal insurgents fighting for an autonomous state in Bangladesh, rebels given sanctuary in this border area say.

A senior security official here confirmed the assistance and said an undetermined number of rebel fighters had stayed along the border near camps of Indian paramilitary forces.

''The Government is giving them help,'' the official added, without elaborating.

The rebels, who are mostly Buddhists, belong to the Chakma and other tribes in the Chittagong Hills of Bangladesh. They say they are being persecuted and pushed off their fertile land by an influx of ethnic Bengali Bangladeshis, who are overwhelmingly Muslim. Elections Are Planned

President H. M. Ershad of Bangladesh is planning to hold elections on June 25 to give some local autonomy to the Chittagong Hill Tracts, but the Shanti Bahini, the guerrilla organization fighting the Government, has called for a boycott of the vote and declared it will disrupt balloting.

A spokesman for the rebels said Indian officials began to provide arms and money in 1976, after the assassination in a military coup of Sheik Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's first President and a friend of India.

The spokesman, Bimal Chakma, said the Indian Government had not given as many weapons as were needed. ''At the beginning we got some consideration, but it is very low compared with what we need.''

Sad news. A Bangladesh army soldier was killed in an ambush yesterday in Rangamati.

It's time to launch a cleansing operation in CHT.

@LeonBlack08

I hope we Indians and BDs don't get into a mutual slanging match. This is a game the big boys are playing. They want to carve out a Christian homeland in NE India, CHT and Arakan-CHD area of Burma.

Regards

It's never going to happen. 4 countries - India, BD, Myanmar and China have stakes in this region.

We are overestimating the power of US in this region.

During a visit to the factory, Ringvo Apparels, yesterday this correspondent found 10,000 more uniforms, as counted by workers.

Three individuals, including the factory owner, Shahedul Islam, were arrested over the incident. The other two – Golam Azam and Niaz Haider – had placed the order for the uniforms.

Army's concern

Brigadier General Md Nazim-ud-Daula, director of the Directorate of Military Operations at the Army Headquarters, during a media briefing in Dhaka yesterday, said the army took the matter very seriously and is thoroughly investigating it.

"The KNF represents the Kuki community, which has a population of around 12,000. So, why were 30,000 uniforms being produced? What's the truth behind this and who's involved? The army is taking this matter very seriously and is thoroughly investigating it," he said.

They even fight amongst themselves. Just lol.
