Bangladesh plans $2.2b purchase of 20 Chinese J-10 fighter jets

Bangladesh eyes J-10CE fighter jet deal as Dhaka resets foreign policy

Bangladesh is expected to advance plans to acquire 24 Chinese J-10CE multi-role fighter jets during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to China beginning Monday, as Dhaka and Beijing prepare to deepen cooperation across defense, infrastructure, trade and investment.

"We hope to sign the fighter jet purchase agreement by August this year," a senior government official told Daily Waadaa on condition of anonymity.

A Chinese delegation visited Dhaka last week to accelerate negotiations, while Bangladeshi officials are expected to hold separate meetings with China's foreign and defense ministers during the visit to finalise key details of the proposed acquisition.

Alright folks, looks like BAF is ditching Eurofighter despite signing LOI in December last year and being at advance stage of negotiation.

I guess that given potential fund size, they concluded 24x J10CE (2x sqd) is better than 12x Eurofighter. Although I am pretty sure the anonymous official got the J10CE flyway cost wrong, however, overall this piece of news is likely accurate as this new outlet run by fairly credible folks.

Having mixed feeling about this acquisition. Obviously we are putting lots of our eggs in Chinese bucket now. It's great visa vie India. But don't know how will it turn out in a contingency with Myanmar. Which still is as of now our primary national security threat with Rohingya crisis.

Is it business as usual for Forces Chiefs to attend a budget session of the National Assembly?

Looks like acquisition plans are going ahead after a long hibernation.

1. Navy will commence construction of 4 LPC this year.
2. Army is expanding it’s armour, rocket & Aviation.
3. Airforce is by far the most costly acquisitions of all.

But even with the small development budget allocated, it is enough to pay the initial signing amount neede.

We shall cross that bridge when we get there.

East Pakistani cessation took place due to a strong Bangladeshi nationalism. ...
No such thing.

India invaded a Pakistani province along with Mukti Bahini terrorists, dismembered it and installed a puppet Government. The End.

Bengalis are smart. They can leverage their relations with big powers to stay out of a direct conflict. India, China, USA & to a lesser extent Pakistan, can all counter balance each other & Bangladesh can carry on as it does.

Bangladesh is a small country with a big population. It has no ambitions within the region & beyond. Its rightfully concerned about economics more than anything else.

Embarking on armament is going to create more threats for Bangladesh than bring security. A squadron of J10s or Typhoons is only going to invite a couple or more squadrons from India & Myanmar on its borders. Bangladesh can not afford to be seen as a threat to India & does not want to antagonise India.
L take. With a growing economy you need a military capable of protecting that economy through deterrence. Economy will not grow if big powers can bully you for their advantage.

You give too much credit to indians. By that you effectively say pakistan army is trash. Which it was not even in 71 standards.

see how long hated military dictatorships survive - Syria, Iraq, Libya, Iran, Sudan, Myanmar

without Indian military help, Pakistani army would be beating the East Pakistanis like a drum to this day

The only dance that we know of is the one Modi did for Trump and Satanyahu.
Being toilet paper for decades is worse you know. I guess this relationship began even before 71 war.

Khwaja's words.

The way the Bangladesh gdp is growing and Forex they may end up with the biggest fleet of j10s In the region

They lack motivation for bigger and stronger armed forces. Dont know why.

They don't fear a existence threat like Pakistan fears from India or Israel fears from .the Arabs

It's your perceived threat matrix
Bangladesh wants nothing really from it's neighbours and they want nothing from them

It's perfect situation. To concentrate on their economic growth something they have done well

Today they are strong regional economic power.

Look at the contrast with other states knee deep in debt and massive perceived security concerns or perceived historic border disputes... spending money on defense they can't sustain long term crippling their gdp and forex
