A total of 349 members of Parliament were eligible to vote in what was the first contested presidential election since Oct. 1991, when the nation became a parliamentary democracy. Every presidential election since then had been uncontested, drawing no challengers to the ruling party’s candidate.

Unless all the agents of the previous regime is removed from positions of power, Bangladesh can't achieve true independence.
It appears to me that two factions of the deep state fighting it out. Tareq Zia has no option but to play along.

Indian moles within BNP and the current economic and power crisis will force BNP to strike a deal with BAL I think. At this rate BAL 2.0 will be back in power in a few years.
