My hope is that he will be the reassuring and well-intentioned figure behind which more active people can rally and do the actual heavy lifting. At least, we can all count on his integrity, his detachment - look at how he has made no reference to the trials he has personally undergone - and his technical skills.

No, I agree with you, the basic premise is that India has no foreign policy in effective terms, it is a sycophant with no vision and no horizon obeying the wishes, sometimes articulated, sometimes suspected but not spoken out aloud, of a very inferior character.
For me, it is a given that our national government will continue to mess up their relations with Bangladesh, as they have messed up before, and as they have messed up relations with every single neighbour.

The point is that he is a Bangladeshi, and goes through this role play. There are different reactions to it, as the actual Turks are not very pleased about it.

Hasina was overthrown because she lost China.

India seems to be the biggest loser out of this farrago.
BNP/Jamat shills used to claim Hasina had corrupted all levels of bureaucracy and military and turned them into India shills.
India has lost all influence and hold over Bangladesh.
The young are extremely hostile towards India - especially due to Modi.
Bangladeshis are extremely united and the future looks bright.
Thank you Hasina for all the infrastructure. It has put Bangladesh on a good footing.
I can also see harsh treatment of all the thieves and defaulters.
The youth have tasted power and will not relinquish it.

It is not just the infrastructure but look at how educated the young are now in BD. They seem to be just as knowledgeable and worldly as in even the most developed societies.
I used to think that 2029 would be a good time for Hasina to leave at the end of this term and then democracy may then work in BD, as the country would be developed enough at that time.
If Dr Yunus can reform the political system and all layers of government over the next 2 years before handing over to an elected government, then BD will have a bright future still.

Yup. Not many folks know Suhrawarsys influence on Mujib. Also the role Bhashani played when Mujib was mostly in jail in the 60’s.

That is your political legacy (including Maulana Bhashani's pro-China stand, that so many people are channeling now without the slightest awareness about the Maulana's position on it decades ago).
It is difficult to understand why people ignore it; perhaps because they are simply not aware of it. He was born in 1920, and therefore lived through some of the most stirring moments of political developments in Bengal when he was a teen-aged activist, an aggressive Muslim League leader under Suhrawardy.
