Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has received Saudi Arabia's highest national honour, the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellence.

In a statement released by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military's media wing, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met Saudi Arabia's Minister of Defence, Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on Monday during an official visit to the Kingdom.

The two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest during the meeting, including the regional security situation, defence and military cooperation, strategic collaboration, and evolving geopolitical challenges. "The interaction reaffirmed the deep-rooted, historic, and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia," read the statement.

Field Marshal Munir was conferred Saudi Arabia's highest national honour, under a royal decree issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, during the visit. Munir is also the recipient of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) and Hilal-e-Jurat.

According to the ISPR statement, "The honour recognises Field Marshal Asim Munir's distinguished military service and leadership, his central role in advancing defence cooperation, strategic coordination, and institutional linkages between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, as well as his contributions toward regional peace and stability, including sustained collaboration in counter-terrorism and security."

The Saudi leadership commended Field Marshal Munir's professional capabilities and strategic vision, and praised his commitment to promoting the longstanding and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Munir expressed gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Saudi leadership for the honour. ISPR said this reflects the enduring bonds between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to the security, stability, and prosperity of the Kingdom.

"The conferment of the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellent Class underscores the depth of Pakistan–Saudi Arabia relations and the shared determination of both nations to further strengthen strategic cooperation in pursuit of regional and global peace," read the statement.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have enjoyed a longstanding strategic and defence cooperation. On September 18, the two countries signed a landmark "Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement", declaring that "any aggression against either country shall be considered an aggression against both."

The agreement marked a significant milestone in the two countries' relationship. For decades, Pakistani military trainers have served in the kingdom, while Riyadh has extended generous financial support to Islamabad in times of economic crisis.

@maxpane

Looks like the good Field Marshall is competing with Modi for the maximum number of international awards!

A competition existing only in your mind.

If the medals meant as much as you think they did, there would be no defence pact between Pakistan and Saudi

@r3alist

If the medals meant as much as you think they did,

Well, they do to the leaders themselves. Ask Donald Trump

there would be no defence pact between Pakistan and Saudi

Well KSA didn't join in the Afghan War, I think?

Well, they do to the leaders themselves. Ask Donald Trump

I will ask him when I next see him

Well KSA didn't join in the Afghan War, I think?

Was that a war?

I guess the point here if you ever put too much stock into these symbolic gestures you could look stupid, like modi does, celebrating the medal then years later sign a defence treaty with Pakistan. The psychological difference between those who value form over substance.

I take it the title of 'God' wasn't available at the time?

Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz has conferred the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellent Class on Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for his efforts to “advance Pak-Saudi ties”, it emerged on Monday.

According to a report by Saudi Gazette, the medal has five classes; excellent, first, second, third, and fourth. It is usually awarded to those who have rendered outstanding services to Saudi Arabia or one of its institutions.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported late on Sunday that CDF Field Marshal Munir was given the medal in honour of his “distinguished efforts to strengthen the strategic relationship and cooperation between the two nations”.

The report added that the ceremony took place during the Saudi minister’s reception of CDF Field Marshal Munir in Riyadh.

“Prince Khalid congratulated Field Marshal Munir on his appointment as Pakistan’s chief of defence forces, wishing him continued success in his new role,” the report added.

“During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the historical Saudi-Pakistani relations and the strategic cooperation in the defence field, discussing efforts to establish the foundations of international peace and security, as well as issues of common interest,” the publication reported.

Separately, in a post on the social media platform X, the minister said, “Upon the directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques [the title held by the Saudi king], I presented Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir with the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellent Class for his distinguished efforts to enhance our cooperation and advance the Saudi-Pakistani relations.”
