On 15 October, we celebrate the birth anniversaries of two distinguished PAF heroes, Air Chief Marshal Hakimullah Khan Durrani, NI(M), SJ, SBt and Squadron Leader Arif Manzoor (Shaheed) SJ, TBt, whose gallantry embodied the courage and combat excellence of PAF's air warriors.

Born in Charsadda in 1935, Air Chief Marshal Hakimullah was destined to leave an indelible mark on the history of Pakistan Air Force. His journey to excellence began at PAF Academy Risalpur, where he earned the coveted Best Pilot Trophy, heralding the arrival of an exceptional fighter pilot.

During the 1965 War, as Flight Lieutenant and Flight Commander of No 9 Squadron, he etched his name in military aviation history by forcing an Indian Gnat to land at Pasrur; a remarkable feat of airmanship that earned him the Tamgha-e-Basalat.

The 1971 War witnessed his courage and leadership soar to new heights. Commanding No 5 Squadron, he personally led five daring Mirage strikes against heavily defended Indian airfields.

Under his inspiring command, the Squadron executed an astounding 393 combat sorties — without losing a single aircraft. His extraordinary valour earned him the prestigious Sitara-e-Jurat. Rising to the pinnacle of his illustrious career,

Air Chief Marshal Hakimullah assumed command of the Pakistan Air Force as Chief of the Air Staff in 1988. Over the next three years, he spearheaded vital modernization initiatives, sharpening PAF’s combat edge and strengthening its operational capabilities.
