In the third week of August, week 34 of the year, the market was firmly up, with Zeekr and Xiaomi being the exceptions. Nio’s insurance registrations were up 40%, and BYD was up 10% compared with the week before. Tesla was mainly flat, and Xioami was 20% down.

Week 34 of 2024 (W34) 2024 is between August 19 – 25. The week W34 2023, used for year-on-year comparison, was between August 21 – 27.

The weekly sales are published by Li Auto, and despite Li’s not explicitly saying it, they are based on insurance registration data. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV) sales, the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.

NEV penetration exceeds 50% again

The EV market in China continues to grow in W34, with the weekly penetration rate exceeding 51% once again. In W34, total vehicle sales reached 467,000 units, representing a slight year-over-year decrease of 0.43% but a significant week-over-week increase of 13.08%. ICE vehicle sales totaled 226,000 units, a year-over-year decline of 24.41%, though a 14.72% increase was noted from the previous week. Meanwhile, NEV sales surged to 241,000 units, marking a 45.18% increase from the same period last year and an 11.57% rise from the previous week. The NEV penetration rate for the week stood at 51.61%, a significant jump of 16.21%compared to last year.

Year-to-date, the Chinese automotive market has seen total sales of 13.053 million units, reflecting a year-over-year growth of 3.22%. ICE vehicle sales, however, have declined to 7.343 million units, down 14.02% from last year. On the other hand, NEV sales have continued to climb, reaching 5.71 million units, a notable 39.09% year-over-year increase. The year-to-date NEV penetration rate has risen to 43.74%, up by 11.28 percentage points compared to the same period in 2023.

The new BYD MPV will be officially released on August 30 at the Chengdu Auto Show. This car has previously been spotted in various spy shots, and there has been considerable speculation as to whether it will be called the Tang Max or Zhou. The mystery will be solved at 2:30 in Hall 9.

The unveiling announcement came from Lu Tian, GM of BYD’s Dynasty sales division, in a tweet on Weibo. As part of the message, it makes a statement saying something along the lines of “the curtain of the new dynasty will be opened.” This suggests that the new car has a new dynasty name. Tang has already been applied to a range of BYD SUVs, so the name Tang Max now seems highly unlikely. Unless BYD has chosen another dynasty name to give the new MPV, then Zhou seems almost certain.

As part of the tweet, Lu also included some spy shots of the new car. These, however, are still quite heavily camouflaged, which is obviously designed to keep us guessing right up until the event. We can at least though make out the silhouette, and we know that the car will be more than 5 meters, and it’s likely that the wheelbase alone will be three meters. From the shots we can see that the new car will have an imposing grill, this is somewhat of a trademark feature for the Dynasty series.

An interior spy shot from a different source shows the three rows of seats from the rear. The new BYD has a seven-seat layout arranged as 2 + 2 + 3. Up front, the car has three screens with a digital LCD instrument panel, a center infotainment screen, along with a dedicated passenger’s entertainment screen. In the second row, the two seats have independent armrests and seem to be electrically adjustable. Passengers sitting here also benefit from airplane-style tray tables, which come from the backs of the front seats. It looks as if there may be some controls on the back of the center console and possibly even a compartment for use by rear passengers. Between the two second-row seats is a small passage for entry to the third row. Each passenger in the third row appears to have an adjustable headrest.

The new MPV is expected to use BYD’s DM 5.0 technology. This has debuted with only two engines a 1.5 naturally aspirated engine and a 1.5 turbo. Most likely, the 1.5T engine will find its way into the new MPV as this engine has been the heart of the PHEV system in larger vehicles such as the forthcoming Han DM-i. The BYD472ZQB engine has a maximum power of 115 kW and, in the case of the Han, is matched with a 200 kW peak power TZ210XYD electric motor. Earlier reports suggested the Zhou would have an all-electric range of 200 km which is far greater than any other cars fitted with the DM 5.0 technology.

Prices are expected to be in the 250,000 – 350,000 yuan (34,450 – 48,200 USD) range. More information should become clear at the Chengdu Auto Show, although it is unclear whether that event will be just an unveiling or a full launch.

At the 2024 Chengdu Auto Show, Chery unveiled its Fulwin E05 under the Fulwin (or Fengyun in Chinese) series. The new car is expected to be priced at around 150,000 yuan (21,100 USD) and will be offered in both EV and EVER variants.

In the front, the closed grille paired with the slender sharp headlights on both sides and raised ribs on the hood are highly recognizable. A roof-mounted lidar is also present. The Chery Fulwin E05 will come standard with advanced driving assistance capabilities such as memory parking and high-speed navigation.

From the side, the car body adopts a fastback shape. Other notable design elements include frameless doors, hidden door handles, and interesting rim shapes.

The vehicle that appeared at the Chengdu Auto Show was equipped with 245/45 R20 Pirelli tires. Additionally, it is reported that the wheelbase of the Chery Fulwin E05 will reach 2900 mm and the length will reach 4800 mm.

At the rear, the taillights adopt a through-type design, with the “FULWIN” logo added between the light groups. At the same time, the panoramic sunroof is integrated with the front and rear windows.

Inside, the cockpit is minimalistic and layered; a large area is wrapped in soft materials. There is a rectangular instrument panel behind the flat-bottom steering wheel, a suspended central control screen, and hidden air-conditioning outlets. In addition, the ambient lighting decoration effect on the dashboard, center console, door trims, and carpet are eye-catching.

Furthermore, the interior is expected to come with an in-vehicle refrigerator and an “AI emotional smart cabin” with four modes, which is likely along the line of sleep mode or relaxing mode as an example.

At this time, the specific power and interior parameters have not been officially announced, we’ll watch closely for more details.

Last year, Chery restarted the Fulwin series, and in less than a year, it launched four new cars, namely Fulwin A8, T6, T9, and T10, and plans to launch a total of 11 models in two years. The Fulwin T11 is also expected to launch at this year’s Chengdu Auto Show.

For most producers, selling 20,000 cars of a model a month would be seen as a success, but in the case of Ora an EV brand from Great Wall Motor, such sales meant a loss. This was the explanation Dong Yudong, CEO of Ora, gave for the discontinuation of the Black Cat and White Cat small electric hatchbacks over the last couple of years.

In an interview, Dong explained the decision and outlined the economics. Although the Ora brand has had monthly sales in the region of 20,000 for the Black Cat and White Cat models, according to Dong, the brand lost 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD) with each sale. He says that the monthly loss was more than 200 million yuan (28 million USD) which was unsustainable for the brand.

The cost of what in China is known as the three electric systems, which consist of the battery, motor, and electric control unit, accounts for most of the vehicle’s cost. In the case of the Black Cat and White Cat models, this can be as much as 90% of the cost, while the battery alone can account for 40 to 60%.

From such sales figures, it would appear that the two models were successful, but their culling is an indication of the ferocity of the market competition. It also shows that with the decrease in subsidies, it is very difficult for companies to make a profit, particularly on small EVs. It is also perhaps further vindication for the charge from the EU and the US, among others, that China does not sell EVs for their true cost. It is also not the first such admission from a Chinese insider, we previously reported that Song Zhiping, president of the China Association of Listed Companies state that the only new energy vehicle companies that made a profit were BYD and Li Auto.

The Ora Black Cat, originally known as the Ora R1, was produced between 2019 and 2022. It is diminutive, measuring 3495, 1660, and 1560 mm (l/w/h) and having a wheelbase of just 2375 mm. The White Cat is only slightly bigger, measuring 3621, 1660, and 1520 (l/w/h) and having a wheelbase of 2490 mm. The car was produced from 2020, and according to our information, sales ceased possibly as far back as 2022.

Editor’s note:

It is strange that Dong only recently made these comments in an interview, seeing as the production of both the Black Cat and the White Cat ended a few years ago. At the same time, he made some counterintuitive comments, Claiming that in the next five years, sales of EVs with a length of more than 4.6 meters would decline and those of A0 size cars would increase in the next three to five years. What this means, given that he now believes such cars are competitive, is not clear.

Geely revealed official photos of the Geome Xingyuan funky electric hatchback. It is the latest addition to the brand’s Geome line. The 4.1-meter electric car with up to 114 hp and a 410 km range will enter China this year to rival the BYD Dolphin.

Geome was previously known as Geometry. It was initially an independent brand under the Geely Group. However, disappointing sales volume resulted in turning the Geometry brand into the Geome series under the Geely brand. Nowadays, its model line comprises six cars: Panda Mini, Panda Knight, G6, M6, E, and A. Soon, the Xingyuan hatchback will become the latest addition to the Geome line.

Geely Geome Xingyuan official images

Geely released official images of the Geome Xingyuan EV on September 2. It follows the new design language first adopted by the Geome model. It has a roundish styling with a sleek body, raindrop-shaped headlights, flush door handles, and a blackened roof. The rear end of the Xingyuan has the “Geome” inscription, a spoiler, and oval taillights.

Other features of the Geome Xingyuan exterior styling are flush door handles and fuzzy four-spoke rims. It has plastic trim all over the lower part of the body. Its overall styling looks like a mix of Wuling Bingo (see specs) and Smart #1 (see specs). So, the Xingyuan looks ordinary for its class. However, its design is still eye-catching with black-beige body shade.

Inside, the Geome Xingyuan makes a loud statement it is a city car. It has an illuminated city view pattern on the center console and door cards. Another feature of the Xingyuan is a two-spoke D-shaped steering wheel, a small LCD instrument cluster, and a sizeable suspended main screen. Its center tunnel has two wireless charging pads, a small gear shifter, two cup holders, and a small storage compartment.

Geely officially shared that Xingyuan adopts the Flyme Auto OS from the Meizu phone maker. Its controlling stake was acquired by Geely in 2022. The main features of the Flyme Auto OS are a high integration with Meizu phones, wide customization options, games support, and a built-in AI assistant.

Geely Geome Xingyuan specs

The Geely Geome Xingyuan applied for the sales license on July 10 in China. Its dimensions are 4135/1805/1570 mm with a wheelbase of 2650 mm. It is 10 mm longer and 35 mm wider than the BYD Dolphin (see specs). However, the BYD’s EV has a 50-mm longer wheelbase. The curb weight of the car lies in the 1215 – 1285 kg range.

The Geome Xingyuan has an 11-in-1 electric drive. The entry-level trim of the Xingyuan EV adopts the TZ160XS001 electric motor from GLB Power for 58 kW (78 hp). Its top speed reaches 125 km/h. The more powerful variant has the TZ160XS002 from the same manufacturer for 85 kW (114 hp). The top speed of this hatchback is 135 km/h.

The Geely Geome Xingyuan has two LFP batteries made by CATL on board. Among them, the first pack offers a capacity of 30.12 kWh, suitable for 310 km of CLTC range. The second variant is a 40.16 kWh battery for 410 km. The Geely Xingyuan will enter the market this year with a starting price of around 80,000 yuan (11,250 USD).
