In a surprising move, Great Wall Motor (GWM) announced the revival of its Sar Mecha Dragon project under GWM Ora. The last time we heard from Sar was towards the end of 2022 when GWM announced that Sar would be operated alongside Ora. Yet the Sar Mecha Dragon has faded from the spotlight since then.

The original Sar Mecha Dragon made quite a buzz during the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show, with a suggested retail price of 488,000 yuan (67,800 USD). It was the world’s first model to be equipped with four laser radars, and ultrasonic radar, with L2-assisted driving. Back in 2022, Sar applied for a sales license at the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Hence, it was production-ready. Then came the consistent delays of deliveries that dampened the enthusiasm of potential buyers.

Since October 2015, GWM’s Haval H6 has consistently been China’s best-selling SUV, securing the title for almost two consecutive years. However, this success in ICE vehicles created a blind spot for GWM in its long-term plans for alternative technologies such as pure electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

Wen Fei, CEO of GWM Sar, now serves as dual CEO for GWM Sar and GWM Ora. GWM’s recent corporate restructuring aims to enhance efficiency and utilize resources within GWM for competitiveness in the electric vehicle sector.

The new Sar Mecha Dragon will feature an aggressive-looking grille and a matrix-style integrated LED headlight. It is anticipated to be integrated with a smart driving solution provided by Momenta, along with a smart cockpit solution offered by Huawei.

Sar Mecha Dragon, equipped with a dual-motor four-wheel-drive system, boasts 400 kW of power and 763 Nm torque. It will achieve 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 3 seconds. Notable features include Brembo calipers and CDC adjustable shock absorbers. The vehicle’s 115 kWh battery offers an estimated 802 km range under CLTC. It will support 800V, 480 kW charging technology.

GWM is grappling with its challenges in the car industry as a whole. GWM’s cars including Haval, Wey, Poer, Ora, and Tank witnessed a 28.94% year-on-year drop in February sales. Ora’s sales alone dropped by 58.18% in the past 12 months. The introduction of Sar Mecha Dragon to Ora’s lineup aims to break away from the “female-oriented” label.
However, reviving the Sar Mecha Dragon priced at a starting price of 488,000 yuan gives it little chance in the highly competitive Chinese market. Let’s take Geely’s Zeekr 001 as an example. It is priced at 329,000 yuan (top-trim level). The Zeekr 001 offers more power and is already available for purchase. We should also take note of HiPhi’s recent 6-month production pause announcement, as they too aimed for a similar market segment.

Today Changan officially launched its Hunter pickup truck. First shown at last year’s Guangzhou Auto Show Changan claim that this is the first extended range EV (EREV) pickup truck in the world. There are 8 versions to choose from with prices starting from 139,900 yuan (19,450 USD) and going up to 216,900 yuan (31,150 USD). Models are as follows:

Warrior Edition Deluxe single-motor standard box139,900 yuan (19,450 USD)
Warrior Edition Deluxe dual-motor four-wheel drive standard box149,900 yuan (20,850 USD)
Knight Edition Pilot Type single-motor standard box163,900 (22,750 USD)
Knight Edition Pilot Type dual-motor four-wheel drive standard box173,900 (24,200 USD)
Knight Edition Flagship dual-motor four-wheel drive standard box193,900 (26,950 USD)
Armor Edition single-motor standard box179,900 (25,000 USD)
Armor Edition dual-motor four-wheel drive standard box196,900 (27,350 USD)
Armor Edition Global Type dual-motor four-wheel drive standard box216,900 (30,150 USD)
Single motor versions use a 130 kW unit on the rear axle and the four wheel drive versions add a 70 kW electric motor to the front. All use the same 31.18 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack. This is enough for a 180 km CLTC pure electric range and a combined range of 1,031 km – range as quoted is strangely the same for RWD and AWD.

As a range extender the Hunter uses the JL486ZQ6 engine, a 2.0T unit it can deliver a maximum of 140 kW power. However being a series hybrid the engine only ever acts as an electricity generator.

The pickup is a fairly standard looking dual-cab vehicle with no major distinguishing details. Thick cladding surrounding the lower part of the truck protect it from getting scratched. Meanwhile the load bed is covered with anti-scratch and corrosion resistant materials. There is also a standard electrical discharge unit in the bed to power things using the truck, providing up to 3.3 kW. Load capacity of the truck however is a very low 495 kg.
It is available in both standard and extended length variants with extended versions costing 1,000 yuan (150 USD) more. The standard version has length / width / height of 5380×1930×1885 mm, and the wheelbase is 3180 mm. With the longer version all the extra space goes to the cargo bed and the pickup is overall 5630×1930×1885 mm, with the wheelbase now being 3430 mm.
This means that the standard version has a bed of 1600×1595×500 mm, while in the longer version it is 1850×1595×500 mm. Usefully the tailgate incorporates a drop down step which is 530 mm off the ground, the bay itself is 830 mm off the ground. The sides of the passenger compartment have running boards. A manual roller shutter is also available for the cargo bay.

Angle of approach is up to 29° while angle of departure is up to 27°. Fairly high ground clearance should mean the rugged looks are matched by actual off-road ability.
Inside the truck is quite modern with a car like blended dual screen unit with a 7.5-inch instrument cluster and 12-inch infotainment unit. Features according to model include cruise control, AutoNavi map navigation, turn assist lights, automatic wipers, voice control, OTA upgrade of the car machine, leather steering wheel, LCD instrument, 40W wireless phone charging, leather seats, seat heating, 4/6 speakers, air conditioning rear air vents, etc.

Editor’s note:

There are not many NEVs in the commercial vehicle space particularly when it comes to pickup trucks. The Changan Hunter will obviously be an attractive choice but the poor payload will likely adversely affect its appeal for serious use.

Geely, the Chinese automaker, unveiled the Dragon Edition of its Panda Mini EV on March 1st. The overall appearance of this model remains largely unchanged from its predecessor that was introduced in 2022. However looking closer at its specs and price, we see that Geely made some significant improvents.

The Geely Panda Mini Dragon Edition is an electric vehicle (EV) priced at 39,900 yuan (5,500 USD). It offers a range of 200 kilometers under the Chinese Light-duty Test Cycle (Chinese standardized test) and supports fast charging. This is the first time a 200-kilometer range electric car has been introduced in the 30,000-yuan price range. The previous version of this car had a higher-end version priced at 56,900 yuan (8,200 USD) and a 200km range. This pricing is indicative of the ongoing EV price war happening in China.

The Geely Panda Mini features a two-door, four-seater layout, incorporating black-and-white elements reminiscent of pandas. The design aims to cater to the preferences of the young market. It was originally planned to be launched under the Geometry brand, but the management changed plans and included the Panda Mini EV in the Geely lineup.

The Geely Panda Mini has a boxy design and compact dimensions of 3065/1522/1600 mm, with a wheelbase of 2015 mm. Its small stature allows for agile and lightweight maneuvering in urban environments.
The front face of the Panda Mini features a narrow grille with decorative strips along the edges, complemented by round headlights. The car is equipped with aerodynamically designed wheels to reduce wind resistance. At the rear, the design adopts a minimalist approach with a polygonal tail light assembly and an embedded trapezoidal license plate area, adding depth.
The interior of the Geely Panda Mini showcases a relatively uncommon asymmetrical design. The central control area is closer to the passenger side, and the steering wheel has a dual-spoke design. The center console features a floating touchscreen. Due to its positioning and cost considerations, the dashboard and door panels mainly consist of hard materials.

In terms of features, the Panda Mini comes equipped with hill-start assist, EPS electric power steering system, ABS anti-lock braking system, EBD brake force distribution system, driver’s side airbag, child safety seat interface, tire pressure monitoring, and other safety features.
Under the hood, the Panda Mini Dragon Edition is powered by a 30 kW rear-wheel-drive electric motor with a 17 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. It offers a range of 200 kilometers under the CLTC test conditions and supports 22 kW fast charging. At a temperature of 25°C, it takes half an hour to charge from 30% to 80%, and a full charge can be achieved in just 68 minutes. The car also supports regular home charging, providing convenient charging options for users.

Xpeng Motors, a prominent player in the Chinese automotive industry for a decade, has been at the forefront of futuristic innovations. Spy shots of its upcoming flying Land Carrier model emerged a few days ago. Many believed this SUV and flying vehicle combo wouldn’t see the light of day, but these photos show the company is serious about its production goals. Here is a bit of background:

In January this year, Xpeng Motors announced a partnership with Huitian / AeroHT through 2025 (He Xiaopeng Holdings, known internationally as AeroHT). Furthermore, after holding a presentation at CES, Xpeng announced official plans to begin mass production of a flying vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2025, which will be sold by AeroHT.
A rear view of the camouflaged Land Carrier
Flying car projects have been in the works for a long time, and the company filed for patents last year. The company has three models at the forefront of their flying car ambitions: the X2, a traditional VTOL type aircraft, the recently confirmed for production “Land Carrier” model, and another unnamed prototype with integrated car and VTOL functionality.

Renderings of the Xpeng Land Carrier
Xpeng’s iteration, the Land Carrier, has a modular design in which the attached VTOL lacks wheels, resembling more of a “small helicopter” than a traditional flying car. This design assists ground movement yet poses challenges in extended flight times due to high energy consumption.
Xpeng AeroHT initially planned to launch its first flying car in 2024 with a price tag of 1 million yuan (140K USD) However, it was postponed to 2025. As the industry evolves, costs may be reduced, making flying cars more accessible in the future. Yet, beyond technological advancements, unlocking the skies for flying cars demands regulatory changes. China’s stringent airspace regulations, prohibiting low-altitude flight in many regions, represent a significant hurdle yet to be overcome.

He Xiaopeng, Chairman of Xpeng Motors and NPC representative, plans to propose suggestions during the 2024 NPC and CPPCC sessions, which start tomorrow, March 5th. His proposals focus on exploring regulations for limited-scenario autonomous driving, how to regulate flying vehicles, and accelerating the integration of new energy vehicles within the power grid. Xpeng is a key player in the autonomous driving sector with its XNPG intelligent driving tech and is the first automaker with plans to mass produce its flying car, the Land Carrier, next year.

In a statement regarding the proposed plans being presented to China’s governing bodies, Xpeng explains that the number of domestic new energy vehicles is continuously increasing, and the corresponding charging infrastructure is also growing rapidly. However, many challenges remain, such as insufficient power capacity and long investment return cycles. At the same time, the charging behavior of users is disorderly and scattered, which can cause instantaneous overloading of the power grid and exacerbate the structural contradictions in the current charging market.

In this context, Xpeng further explains that leveraging the autonomous driving capability of vehicles to achieve unmanned driving for night-time autonomous charging can potentially improve the supply-demand contradiction during daytime peak periods, enhance the utilization rate of charging infrastructure, fully utilize the advantages of surplus and low-cost nighttime electricity, and shift the electric load from active charging behavior to automated roaming services. However, there is still a lack of relevant policy and regulatory support for this.

To address this, He Xiaopeng suggests exploring the establishment of policies and regulations for low-speed autonomous driving in limited scenarios, conducting pilot applications of nighttime low-speed autonomous driving combined with charging, and shifting the electric load from daytime peak periods to nighttime off-peak periods by transforming the charging process from “finding a charging station by a person” to “finding a charging station by a vehicle.”
Mr. He proposes “promoting the top-level design of vehicle-grid interaction, establishing mature business models, unifying relevant standards, exploring more application scenarios, accelerating market-oriented promotion, promptly formulating and implementing a standard system for various aspects of vehicle-grid interaction, and clarifying electricity market trading mechanisms.”
Additionally, Mr. He plans to address the emerging market of flying cars. He acknowledges their potential in advanced transportation but highlights the lack of product regulations and certification efficiency. He suggests “accelerating top-level design, planning, and internationalization of standards for flying cars.” He proposes “building an operation system for flying cars, including driver certification, airspace management, and regulatory platforms.” Advocating for special research, industry guidance funds, infrastructure support, and financial tools to promote the high-speed development and commercialization of the flying car industry.

Xpeng’s to be mass produced in 2025 Land Carrier model
With the National People’s Congress beginning tomorrow, we will keep a close eye on how these ideas and proposals set forth by the CEO of Xpeng are received.

The 2024 BYD Yuan Plus Honor Edition entered the Chinese market and became 16,000 yuan (2,200 USD) cheaper than before. This model is well-known as Atto 3 in the overseas market as it is the main BYD driving force there. Now, the Yuan Plus starts from just 119,800 yuan (16,650 USD).

What’s new about BYD Yuan Plus Honor Edition

The BYD Yuan Plus Honor Edition got a few enhancements compared to the 2023 model year version. It has a new black body color called “Black Knight”. All the chrome-plated trim of this version was blackened as well. The rims of the BYD Yuan Plus Honor Edition are also new. Other body colors remained the same.

Inside, the BYD Yuan Plus Honor Edition also adds the “Black Knight” color scheme. It combines black shades with silver elements and light green trim. The new color replaced the blue&gray scheme available earlier. So, the updated car has two interior variants: black and gray&black. The center console utilizes a 15.6-inch floating screen with a DiLink 4.0 intelligent system. Other upgrades comprise an intelligent voice assistant and an upgraded heat pump system.

Nio has a tendency to spring product surprises on us unsuspecting observers. At Nio Day 2021 the new ET5 was shown and from that we believed the next car to launch on the new NT2.0 platform would be the small sedan. But that would be too simple for Nio and so the actual next car was the ES7, or EL7 as it’s known in Europe.

Deliveries began in August 2022 around a month before the ET5. And when I got to do the media test of the car in July it was as if the car had appeared from nowhere, there was no official unveiling at an Auto Show or a Nio Day, although the cancellation of the Beijing Show in April that year had probably not helped!
Slightly bigger (62 mm longer) than the first generation ES6 (length 4,850 mm) but also a five seater I felt it was safe to assume that the car was the second generation replacement. After all every first generation car was an even number – ES6, EC6, ES8 – and every known second generation car was an odd number: ET5, ET7, ES7.

Then came Nio Day 2022, and I was invited a few days before to do a preview shoot of two new cars. These turned out to be the EC7 and the second generation ES8. Wait a moment that’s an 8 not ES9, although I was told by Nio people that they had considered the name ES9. And so what was the next Nio car I was invited to test drive in June 2023, yes that’s right a second generation ES6 again without being displayed anywhere first. I hope you’re keeping up with all that!
So obviously the ES7 wasn’t a second generation ES6 after all! The real second generation ES6 has gone on to be Nio’s best seller, selling 6,943 in December 2023, accounting for around 39% of Nio sales that month. On the other hand the ES7 managed all of 266 about 1.5% of total Nio sales for the month. The best month ever for the ES7 was November 2022 when the car managed sales of 4897 but since April last year, about the time the new ES6 became known, the model has been in terminal decline. So is it time to kill the ES7?
Second generation Nio ES6 being driven on the roads around Shuiguan Great Wall in Beijing, China.Second generation Nio ES6 being driven along the runway of Badaling Airport, Beijing, China.

Take your positions

Positioning wise the ES7 is placed a bit higher than the ES6 but does it really offer anything that the ES6 doesn’t have? Yes, it is a bit bigger, but both are five seaters and we’re not talking about the kind of size difference between say a BMW X3 and X5. The ES7 is 4912 mm long whereas the ES6 is 4854 mm while there is a 214 mm difference between the two BMW models.

Price is one of the clearest differentiators with the ES7 starting at 468,000 yuan (65,000 USD) when launched which has since dropped to 438,000 yuan (60,850 USD) whereas the ES6 is now a far more affordable 338,000 (46,950 USD). The ES6 was also 30,000 yuan (4,150 USD) more expensive at launch, so despite recent price drops there is still a 100,000 yuan (13,900 USD) difference.
So given the small size difference is the ES7 really worth so much more money? What you get with the ES7 over the ES6 is a more luxurious and faster car, although that speed comes with a caveat.

Spot the difference

The first generation ES6 came with air suspension but the second generation makes do with multi-link both front and rear. There is though CDC which can make up to 500 adjustments per second and Nio has created an intelligent chassis controller (ICC) which Nio claims is China’s first ICC with full-stack capabilities developed in-house. On the other hand the ES7 does get air suspension and so overall provides a much smoother ride than the ES6, which does feel bumpy for rear passengers.
One element I had thought was a signature of the second generation Nio cars was Karuun, a sustainably produced rattan based material, as a veneer on certain cabin surfaces. However, it was conspicuously absent from the ET5, the cheapest Nio model to date. On the ES6, the cheapest Nio SUV it does make a return but is limited to a separator for the two levels of the dashboard and in a small insert on the back of the center console for rear passengers. With the ES7 the material is used far more liberally in the cabin and the general feel is more upmarket.
The front dashboard of a second generation Nio ES6 on a test drive at Badaling Airport, Beijing, China.Interior of the Nio ES7 Premier Edition on an official media test in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China.ES6 interior left ES7 interior right
Rear seat passenger comfort is definitely better in the ES7. Not only are the rear seats electrically adjustable for rake but they also get air cushions. The ES6 as standard only has seat heating for the front seats whereas the ES7 gains ventilation and massage functions which are optional extras on the cheaper car. Furthermore the back seats have heating and massage but on the ES6 these are optional extras but also available is ventilation which the ES7 doesn’t have.
ES6 rear seat left, ES7 rear seat right
I guess you are thinking by now OK I get that the ES7 is more luxurious, but not so fast the ES6 actually has a better ‘queen seat’ as Nio refers to the front passenger seat. Electrically controlled it has 22 positions including a one button setting for what Nio describes as ‘zero gravity’ with a 120° angle.
The queen seat in the second generation Nio ES6 on a test drive in Beijing, China.ES6 queen seat left ES7 queen seat right
In a straight line the ES7 has faster acceleration at 3.9 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph) whereas the ES6 takes 4.5 seconds. So yes the ES6 is slower but will anyone really notice the difference plus the ES6 is much faster than the first generation version. I drove both the new cars on some winding mountain roads, the ES7 around Ninghai, Zhejiang and the ES6 around Shuiguan at the Great Wall in Beijing. Both handled well.
There is, though, a clear difference in the feel of the cars. Of all the Nio cars the ET5 drives best, I haven’t driven the ES6 back to back with the ET5 but it seems almost as good and may even be its equal. The steering is very well weighted and like the ET5 it has a rear wheel drive bias. With the second generation Nio cars while all are dual motor in many situations they turn off the smaller secondary motor only using it for acceleration or high speed driving. Where the primary motor is mounted depends on the model. So far the ET5, ES6 and EC7 are the only ones where it is mounted at the rear. These all add up to make the ES6 the superior drive and why I said the ES7 is faster with a caveat. Essentially the ES7 is faster in a straight line but throw in some curves and you may find the ES6 beating it.
Second generation Nio ES6 in front of the Shuiguan (Water Pass) Great Wall on a test drive in Beijing, China.
And now for the death sentence. While both the ES6 and ES7 are second generation Nio cars the ES6 is more second generation than the ES7. I mentioned earlier that the ES7 appeared to come out of nowhere, there were a few spy shots and then bam I was being invited for a test drive. Insiders say the car was rushed through to production. From a product perspective Nio which until the ET7 had only been known for SUVs was taking a gamble launching the second generation with a saloon and that bet would be doubled if the second new car was the ET5, in short Nio needed a second generation SUV and soon. So while the ES7 does indeed use the new tech platform so providing features like the infotainment and autonomous driving the mechanical platform is still the first generation. The ES6 on the other hand is truly fully second generation.

Aim, fire

Twitter is full of Nio fanboys, some almost as rabid as Tesla ones, very keen to talk the virtue of Nio shares but for the last few years they’ve been perennially disappointed by the lack of price movement – at least in a northerly direction, Nio seems quite good at pushing in the other direction. No matter the virtues of battery swapping there is a huge problem with Nio and that’s sales. The brand is completely dependent on the ES6 and ET5 (including the touring) for sales. They together made up 69% of December 2023’s total. While it is true that Nio needs more models to get sales, what they need is ones with less overlap like the ES6/ES7 and EC6/EC7. There needs to be a clear difference between them both in terms of size and style.
Overall while the ES7 does have some advantages, the ES6 is the better car and there simply isn’t enough that makes the ES7 different to warrant its existence. So in order to have clearer more streamlined model line up offer an air suspension option on the ES6 and an interior upgrade package and pull the trigger on the ES7. The ES7 has had its day, it stood, but did not deliver.

Alps DOM (codename) electric crossover from Nio was spotted in China with a “Better than Model Y” inscription on the tailgate. This vehicle was spied in China for the second time since July last year. Previously, Nio’s co-founder and CEO William Li asked people who wants to purchase the Tesla Model Y to wait for the Alps first model because it will be cheaper. Nio is eager to compete with the world’s bestselling car.

The Alps DOM was spotted during road tests in Heihe, Heilongjiang, wearing rather revealing camouflage. It is a fastback SUV with a comparatively low beltline. Its rear end has a ducktail spoiler, a minimalistic bumper, and two thin curved taillight units. The DOM has a charging port in the rear left fender. Its other features are frameless doors and retractable door handles.

As mentioned, the Alps fastback crossover has an inscription on the rear door that says “Better than Model Y.” This statement proves the DOM is positioned as a direct Model Y competitor. Its dimensions are most likely also on par with the Model Y. We will remind you that the American EV boasts dimensions of 4751/1978/1625 mm with a wheelbase of 2890 mm.

Previously, it was reported that the DOM is underpinned by Nio’s third-generation platform, NT 3.0. It will offer customers two optional batteries for 60 kWh and 90 kWh. The entry-level DOM will have a single electric motor developed by Nio. This decision was made to reduce its starting price. However, the DOM will also be available with 4WD. Same with every other Nio car, it supports the battery swap function. According to Nio officials, over a thousand PSS will be available for the Alps after the market launch.
Previously, Nio’s co-founder and CEO William Li asked people who want to buy the Tesla Model Y to wait for the Alps DOM. He underlined that their car would be cheaper. The DOM is expected to start from 250,000 yuan (34,700 USD), while the Model Y costs 258,900 – 363,900 yuan (36,000 – 50,500 USD). William Li also mentioned that the Alps crossover will have faster charging and a bigger screen.
There is no exact information about the launch of the Alps DOM. However, we expect Nio to officially introduce it shortly as its trial production is scheduled for July.

The Jiyue 07 electric liftback, a collaborative project between Geely and Baidu, is undergoing comprehensive testing in Heihe, China, to assess its performance in challenging cold weather conditions. Recently leaked spy photos provide insights into the vehicle’s capabilities in sub-zero temperatures.

For a bit of background, the car received the iF Design Award 2023, became the Red Dot 2023, and was announced late last year. Deliveries are set for sometime in mid-2024. The 07 is Jiyue’s second car after the Jiyue 01, which was also announced in 2023.

The Jiyue 07 showcases a sleek and sporty design. Its closed front end features prominent air deflectors on the bumper, giving it an athletic appearance. The vehicle features handleless doors that can be operated through voice commands, an important function that should be tested in freezing temperatures.

The Jiyue 07’s rear boasts a minimalist aesthetic, enhanced by continuous taillights that add a modern touch. To tackle cold weather challenges, the vehicle incorporates an efficient thermal management system using heat pumps to aid in rapid cabin heating. Additionally, an adaptive defrosting system prevents fogging and frost accumulation on the windshield, improving visibility in adverse weather conditions.

Beyond its cold-weather performance, the Jiyue 07 offers intelligent features, leveraging Baidu’s AI capabilities and Geely’s SEA architecture (which is also used by every Zeekr model, Polestar 4, Volvo EX90, Volvo EX30, etc). Unlike many other Chinese manufacters that incorporate things like Lidar into its intelligent driving tech, the Jiyue 07 only uses cameras (similar to the Tesla vehicles). The car aims to provide a connected driving experience, and upgrades to its voice command and intelligent driving systems are planned for the future.
As anticipation builds for its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show, the Jiyue 07 has the potential to be an exciting addition to the expanding and very competitive electric vehicle landscape. CarNewsChina will monitor updates regarding its price and delivery schedule.

While everyone is still likely holding out for the Wuling Bingo Mickey Plush Style there is a new Bingo that is definitely going on sale the Bingo Plus and it will launch tomorrow, March 6. Despite the name the Wuling Bingo Plus is not a new version of the small car but rather a whole new car although it is clearly based on the original. Not only does it have a greater range of 510 km but it is significantly bigger as well.

In some markets the BYD Seagull gets renamed as the Dolphin Mini and there is a definite relationship between the Dolphin and Seagull. It is a similar case with the Wuling Bingo and Bingo Plus and they have just chosen not to give the new car a different name.
The Wuling Bingo Plus comes in significantly bigger than the original Bingo and is designed to slug it out with the BYD Dolphin but is still smaller than the BYD car. The Bingo Plus is 4090 mm long with a wheelbase of 2610 mm up from 3950 mm and 2560 mm on the original. Width is also slightly up at 1720 mm while height is slightly down by 5 mm at 1575 mm. BYD’s Dolphin however has a length of 4150 mm and a 2700 mm wheelbase.

While there are some similarities in design between the Wuling Bingo and the Bingo Plus, they are clearly two different cars. The overall shape of the headlight cluster is very similar but the Bingo Plus gains prominent linear LED running lights as part of the cluster and the front gains large air vents.

From the side profile we can see the Bingo Plus gains a floating roof style normally more common on SUVs and there are new five spoke wheels. At the back the taillight clusters are more slender and the actual hatch opening is bigger than on the regular Bingo. The interior has yet to be revealed however vehicle space utilization is claimed to be 78.4%. There is an extra large sunken trunk with 1450 liters of space.

The Wuling Bingo Plus rides on Wuling’s pure electric native platform architecture. Power comes from a TZ180XS275 motor produced by Shandong Shuanglin New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. Maximum power is 75 kW which exceeds the 70 kW available in the Dolphin, and peak torque is 180 Nm. Thanks to a 50.6 kWh battery which is quite large for such a small car the range is 510 km (CLTC).

More on pricing should be known at tomorrow’s launch but the Bingo Plus will likely start at around 100,000 yuan and be priced to compete with the recently launched 2024 version of the BYD Dolphin.

The fifth model from BAIC brand Arcfox will go on sale soon and more details are emerging about the Alpha S5 electric sedan which will be a BYD Seal competitor.

Overall the new Arcfox Alpha S5 looks quite sporty. This is obviously aided by the use of black on the roof, mirrors and wheels but it is also down to the car’s actual lines. There is a closed front face and the headlights flow into the front surround giving the impression of a smiling mouth. Although fastback style the car seems to be a genuine sedan rather than a hatchback.
The length, width and height of the Alpha S5 are 4820/1930/1480 mm, respectively, and the wheelbase is 2900 mm. For wheels there’s a choice between 18 and 19 inch.

There will be both single and dual motor versions of the car. Power for the single motor version comes from a 200 kW unit which gives the car a top speed of 180 km/h. On the dual motor version a 190 kW motor is added at the rear.
Lower spec versions use lithium iron phosphate batteries whereas higher versions gain ternary lithium batteries (NCM) all supplied by CATL.

Previously seen spy shots indicate that the Arcfox Alpha S5 will purely display driving information through a head up display. There is also a 14.6-inch centrally mounted display screen. Many of the cockpit functions and self-driving functions are likely to be based around Huawei Inside (HI) technology. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor controls cockpit functions.

Prices are expected to start around 200,000 yuan.
Arcfox was created in 2017 and currently sell the small Lite city car, Alpha T SUV, Alpha S crossover, and Kaola small MPV. All models are fully electric. So far the brand has not been particularly successful with 2023 sales of just 30,016. As well as the Alpha S5 the brand should soon launch the Alpha T5 SUV.

Editor’s note:

BAIC New Energy initially did quite well with EVs thanks to a range of cheap cars like the EV160 many of which found use as taxis and ride hailing cars. However, in recent years the company has failed to capitalize on the shift to EVs among private consumers. The company last year only managed to sell 92,172 including the contribution from Arcfox.

Wuling, the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture officially launched the Bingo Plus today, March 6th. The Bingo Plus is competitively priced electric SUV with an impressive range (for the price), a large interior, and several advanced safety features. With two available variants, the flagship edition offers a range of 401km, while the higher-end flagship edition boasts an impressive range of 510km. The prices for these variants are set at 89,800 yuan (12,500 USD) and 98,800 yuan (13,700 USD), respectively. This price point is well below estimates when the Bingo Plus was first introduced on January 12th and is indicative of the ongoing price-war happening in the EV sector in China.

Since its launch, the Bingo has gained significant traction in the market, with Wuling reporting sales figures already surpassing 250,000 units. Wuling identified the growing demand for electric vehicles with extended range capabilities, as well as the need for ample space and better performance. In response, the company developed the Bingo Plus, which addresses these requirements head-on.
Equipped with a thermal management system and “smart energy” management technology, the Bingo Plus achieves an estimated range of 10.1-10.6km per kWh. This makes it an good option for both urban commuting and long-distance travel.

The exterior design of the Bingo Plus has a modern aesthetic, characterized by sharp lines and a streamlined body. Its aerodynamic features, such as the high-angle windshield, blade-style front air curtain, and aluminum alloy aerodynamic wheels, contribute to reduced energy consumption. The vehicle is available in three color options: Storm Gray, Aurora Green, and Quantum Black.
Inside the Bingo Plus showcases minimalist design. The cabin offers two interior color choices: Air Green and Warm Sand White. The seats, enveloped in faux suede, can be independently folded in a 5/5 split configuration to accommodate various passenger and cargo needs.

The Bingo Plus has a fairly roomy interior thanks to Wuling’s wide native electric spatial architecture. With 2,610 mm long wheelbase and rear seat legroom of 912 mm. The vehicle also offers numerous storage compartments, including a floating island-style dual-layer design for the instrument panel, maximizing storage space. The vehicle also incorporates safety features, including four airbags, ESC electronic vehicle stability system, ABS anti-lock braking system, automatic parking, and hill-start assist.

Powering the Bingo Plus is a 75kW water-cooled flat-wire motor, delivering 0-50km/h acceleration in under 3.7 seconds. The vehicle offers three charging modes, including fast DC charging, which allows for a 30-35 minute charge from 30% to 80% capacity.
To further entice customers, Wuling is offering various incentives for those who order the Bingo Plus through its online channels. These incentives include financial subsidies of up to 4,000 yuan (555 USD) , a trade-in allowance of 2,000 yuan, a lifetime warranty for the first non-commercial vehicle owner, free maintenance for the first year or 10,000 kilometers, and access to the Wuling EV charging network, which encompasses over 300,000 charging piles across China.
CarNewsChina.com will keep an eye on the success of this new model SUV as it will be interesting to compare sales figures with its little brother the Wuling Bingo.

On March 4th, Beijing Ion Qi New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and BMW, officially settled in Beijing Chaoyang, China. The company aims to operate a “Supercharging Network” in the Chinese market. This partnership marks the beginning of the further expansion of their supercharging network layout in China.

By the end of 2026, the joint venture plans to construct at least 1,000 advanced technology-equipped supercharging stations and approximately 7,000 supercharging stations in China. The first batch of charging stations is scheduled to begin operations in key new energy vehicle cities in China in 2024, with subsequent station construction covering towns and other regions nationwide.

The collaboration between these two German automotive giants in establishing charging infrastructure signals a long-term commitment to the Chinese new energy vehicle market. In 2023, BMW delivered over 40,000 units of its pure electric vehicle models in China, becoming a significant pillar for BMW’s overall sales growth, with a year-on-year increase of over 138%.

As of 2023, BMW has introduced six on-sale pure electric vehicle models in China, with the BMW i3 and BMW iX3 being the top-selling electric products. The latest product, BMW i5, was officially launched in January.

The BMW Supercharging Station project was officially launched in August 2023. Its high-power charging piles support a maximum charging power of 600 kilowatts. As of the end of January 2024, 54 stations have been built, covering 17 major cities in China and open to electric vehicles of all brands.
In 2024, Mercedes-Benz will continue its “dual focus on fuel and electric vehicles” product strategy in China, introducing over 15 new and next-generation products while simultaneously promoting the electrification of its entire product lineup and upgrading its fuel-powered products.

As of 2023, Mercedes-Benz’s supercharging stations have been operational in cities such as Chengdu, Foshan, Qingdao, Chongqing, Kunming, Wuhan, Suzhou, and Changzhou. Mercedes-Benz’s public charging services have access to over 590,000 public charging piles in over 340 cities nationwide.
