On the afternoon of July 3rd, in a live-streamed global debut of the Xpeng MONA M03, Xpeng Chairman He Xiaopeng shared his candid views on the current state of the automotive industry. Reflecting on his decade-long journey in the sector, He expressed concern that the industry prioritizes business and marketing over technological innovation.

He Xiaopeng noted that when he first entered the automotive industry ten years ago, there was minimal change in fuel technology. This stagnant environment allowed companies to profit without significant innovation. However, over the past decade, Xpeng has pursued numerous technological advancements. Despite these efforts, He observed that many players in China’s automotive market still prioritize product and marketing strategies over genuine technological progress.
He Xiaopeng remarked, “Integrating technology quickly can lead to success, but it lacks the joy of true innovation. It feels more like a business than a passion.” He emphasized the importance of balancing learning from others with a commitment to deep technological innovation.

Looking ahead, He expressed his hope that Xpeng will continue to approach the next decade with sincerity and a strong focus on technological advancements, aiming to bring more innovations to the market and China.
In his address, he spoke at length about the new Mona M03. This car is a new series under the Xpeng brand. This compact pure electric vehicle measures 4780/1896/ 1445 mm, with a wheelbase of 2815 mm. The trunk offers a spacious 621 liters, comparable to a mid-size SUV.
A significant focus for the Mona M03 was reducing aerodynamic drag. The vehicle underwent 10 extensive wind tunnel tests lasting over 100 hours, optimizing 15 key areas. These efforts reduced the drag coefficient by Cd 0.085, resulting in a claimed 60 km range increase.

Few new details were provided about the powertrain, but it was confirmed that the Mona M03 will offer a choice between 140 kW and 160 kW electric motors, with a top speed of 155 km/h. The car employs BYD blade lithium iron phosphate batteries, available in versions with a range of either 515 km or 620 km.
Xpeng announced that the Mona M03 will be priced under 200,000 yuan (approximately 27,400 USD), with the final price to be revealed in August during its official launch.

From what I see...

The opposite is true.

More technology, but lacks in the marketing.

Huawei and BAIC plan to sell 120,000 units of the Stelato S9 high-end electric car yearly, starting from 2025. This car aims to rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS. It will start deliveries in January 2025 with a price range of 450,000 – 550,000 yuan (68,900 – 76,650 USD).

Stelato is a joint project between Huawei and BAIC. In this project, the Chinese IT giant supplies software and certain parts. BAIC is in charge of platform and manufacturing. This model of cooperation is quite common for Huawei. It works with Chery, JAC, and Seres in the same way. Back to Stelato, the first car under this brand is the S9 luxury sedan. Huawei & BAIC have big plans for it.

Stelato S9’s production volume

BAIC BluePark’s (NEV subsidiary of BAIC) internal documents revealed insights about the production volume of the Stelato S9. The mass production of this model will kick off in December 2024 with a capacity of 120,000 units per year. It is an ambitious goal for the car with a starting price of 70K USD.

BAIC BluePark
Previously, the official launch ceremony of the Stelato S9 was scheduled for August this year. Four months before the volume production starts. We reckon that Huawei & BAIC want to reveal the final pricing of their first product and check feedback from potential customers. It is a vital thing to do before the production starts. If they miscalculate the demand for such an expensive car, it will be fatal for the entire project.
HIMA stores from Huawei currently sell Aito and Luxeed cars
The goal of selling 120,000 units of a high-end product under a new name yearly is quite ambitious. However, BAIC & Huawei rely on the IT giant’s sales network. Stelato S9 will be available for purchase in Huawei flagship stores and HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) stores. At the same time, Huawei has proven it can convince people to buy an expensive product by selling 59,539 units of Aito M9 SUV (see specs) from February to June 2024. The starting price of this crossover is 469,800 yuan (64,600 USD). So, the S9’s production volume is reasonable.

Stelato plans

It seems Huawei and BAIC are quite confident in the S9’s success because they are already working on two more cars under the Stelato brand. One of them is the station wagon variant of the S9 sedan. It adopts the same BE22 modular architecture. Since wagons aren’t in demand in China, the second car from Stelato may have strong overseas ambitions.

Unofficial render image of Stelato S9 tation wagon
The third model from Stelato is a luxury SUV. There is no further information about this car. Most likely, it will also share the platform with the Stelato S9. And it won’t be cheap.

More about Stelato S9

Stelato S9 stands on the BAIC BE22 modular architecture. It is a large sedan with dimensions of 5160/1987/1486 mm and a wheelbase of 3050 mm. For clarity, it is 56 mm shorter, 61 mm wider, and 26 mm lower than the Mercedes-Benz EQS. The exterior design of the Stelato S9 stays in line with other Huawei-backed cars like Aito M9 and Luxeed S7 (see specs).
Inside, the S9 adopts a four-seat layout. The center console has a large floating screen, an LCD instrument cluster, and an additional touchscreen for a front passenger. The S9 has optional rear-view cameras. Its second-row adopts two more screens and zero-gravity seats.
The Stelato S9’s powertrain has three options:
  • RWD, 227 kW (304 hp), 79.9 kWh LFP battery, 665 km range (CLTC)
  • RWD, 227 kW (304 hp), 97.6 kWh ternary NMC battery, 721 km range (CLTC)
  • 4WD, 385 kW (516 hp), 97.6 kWh ternary NMC battery, 672 km range (CLTC)
As mentioned, the trims and prices of the Stelato S9 will be revealed in August. However, the mass production of the car starts in December this year. So, the first buyers will likely get their cars in January next year.

Huawei has so many car brands.

Avatr, Exceed, Luxeed, Aito, etc.

I wonder if this is really owned by Huawei or just using Huawei system?

On June 12, the EU announced additional tariffs on Chinese EVs: BYD 17.4%, Geely 20%, and SAIC 38.1%. These tariffs are on top of the existing 10% duties and will take effect on July 4.

Nio is really performing bad.

Their car review is very good.

I don't know what the reason is.

But I think Nio should investigate what are the reasons people avoid buying Nio.

Nio is like a car that is "almost being bought", but in the end people decided to buy something else kind of situation.

The Zeekr EX1E electric SUV from Geely was partly revealed in patent images. Its rear end shows the split tailgate and sheds light on the exterior of the brand’s seventh model. The Zeekr EX1E’s styling appears to be quite close to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Zeekr IPO in New York
Zeekr is a high-end EV brand under the Geely Group, launched in 2021. Its current model line comprises four models: 001 liftback, 009 minivan, X crossover, and 007 sedan. Zeekr raised 441 million USD on a New York IPO earlier this year. In 2024, the Geely-baked brand plans to launch two cars: Mix MPV and Ark SUV. Next year, three more models will hit the domestic market. One of them is the EX1E SUV. It was partly revealed in patent images.

More about Zeekr EX1E SUV

Zeekr’s product planning revealed by Deutsche Bank
Previously, there was no information about the upcoming Zeekr EX1E crossover. However, CarNewsChina guessed the codename of this vehicle refers to its size class. It means the EX1E is the Zeekr’s upcoming full-size flagship SUV.

On June 28, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) released patent information from Zhejiang Zeekr Technology Co., Ltd. This patent protects the tailgate design of an unknown Zeekr’s future car. It shows the rear end of the vehicle, which is considered to be the brand’s flagship SUV. So, Chinese sources reported it is patent images of the EX1E crossover.
Zeekr EX1E patent images
The Zeekr EX1E SUV has a flat roofline with a large sunroof, slanted D-pillars, and plastic trim around wheel arches. It has a roof spoiler, a charging port in the left fender, and trapeze-shaped independent taillight units that look quite similar to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. The tailgate of the EX1E also suspiciously stays close to the RR car. It has a split design. The lower section can be folded down, while the upper section opens upward. According to the patent filing, these parts both are power operated.
Interestingly, the styling of the Zeekr EX1E doesn’t follow the brand’s current design language called Hidden Energy. It looks like Zeekr wants to emphasize the EX1E’s status by giving it a unique look. The EX1E crossover is likely to use the SEA architecture. It will enter China next year to rival cars from Legacy brands.

Source: CNIPA, Weibo

This car design destroyed Zeekr reputation.

I like Zeekr unique look.

But this... this is a copycat.

I guess, Geely management is not as smart as I think.

Probably at one time they hired the right person to build a car, but their backward mentality still existed.

The backward mentality at the top management, and sometimes their ego wants to be heard... but with the lack of skill and right mind, it will destroy them in the end.

Sometimes, people make the right decision... but their natural stupidity can't be hidden.

This is FAW-Volkswagen’s new Magotan gasoline-powered sedan. The new car will enter the market on July 9 with an upgraded exterior and interior along with DJI’s newly released intelligent driving solution.

The new Volkswagen Magotan is built on the MQB-B platform with dimensions of 4990/1854/1487 mm and a 2871 mm wheelbase, positioned as a medium-sized sedan. Compared with the current Magotan, the new car is 124 mm longer, 22 mm wider, and 8 mm taller, while the wheelbase remains unchanged. From the side, the car runs on new dual-color rims.
Current FAW-Volkswagen MagotanNew FAW-Volkswagen Magotan
In the front, the narrow grille is connected to the headlights on both sides with a through-type chrome trim positioned in the center, reflecting the car’s “Timeless” design language. The Volkswagen logo in the center can also be lit up and a camera is positioned below the logo.

At the rear, the new Volkswagen Magotan uses a through-type taillight, a red reflective strip below, and a slightly upturned duck tail. The Volkswagen logo can also be lit up, echoing the front.
Compared with the exterior, the changes in the interior are more obvious. The most noticeable are the three screens consisting of a 10.25-inch full LCD instrument panel, a 15-inch 2K floating central control screen, and an 11.6-inch co-pilot entertainment screen. The built-in car system is supported by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. A HUD and electronic gear shifter are also used.
In addition, the new Volkswagen Magotan comes with DJI’s level 2+ intelligent driving system, supporting IQ. Pilot advanced driving assistance functionalities including adaptive cruise control, lane keep, and lane change assist. It is worth pointing out that DJI’s intelligent driving solution has also been launched on other models including the SAIC-Volkswagen Tiguan L Pro, Baojun Yep Plus, and Chery iCar 03 (see spec here).

Furthermore, other configurations include iFlytek voice assistant, Harman Kardon speakers, and front/rear seat electric adjustment/ventilation/heating/massaging.
Two powertrain options are offered: 1.5T and 2.0T engines, mated to a 7-speed DCT. The 1.5T engine outputs 118 kW (158 hp)/250 Nm, which is 8 kW higher than the current 1.4T engine. The 2.0T engine outputs 162 kW (217 hp)/350 Nm, which remains consistent with the current 380TSI trim on sale.

DJI is in autonomous driving system business too???

This is very interesting.

I can't wait for the comparison video between Tesla FSD, Huawei, the new Xpeng XNPG, and DJI.

This is really something that is worth watching.

Xpeng’s smart driving system XNGP gets major upgrade and is claimed to be better than Huawei

Today Xpeng launched a new OTA which includes an upgrade to XNGP. The XOS 5.2.0 Beta version has various user upgrades but the most important for users is the upgrade to the smart driving system. The new capabilities of XNGP are claimed to make the system better than the one offered by Huawei ADS 2.0 in various key areas. There are improvements in 426 situations and these include the ability to cross a roundabout without a map, upgrading the U-turn experience, and also the car’s ability to drive on narrow roads.

The upgrade offers an unlimited XNGP experience allowing AI to drive all over China, furthermore, this is open to almost all users. After enabling intelligent driving a user only needs to set the navigation route and then turn on XNGP and the car can use driving assistance on open roads across the country.
One improved scenario Is the system’s ability to deal with roundabouts. This no longer requires mapping and provides a more natural feeling for the rotation of the steering wheel than the previous version. The system can change lanes within the roundabout and also identify traffic lights at the roundabout, automatically stopping or starting as required. It should be noted that roundabouts are not particularly common in China and neither do drivers have much idea of how to actually negotiate them.

The system’s ability to undertake a U-turn has also been improved. Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng said, “for the first time I felt that our U-turn was silky smooth.” Through AI models and observation of humans, Xpeng has learned to improve the system which now deals with the U-turn at a speed of about 7 km/h.
For smart driving systems, sudden obstacles can cause a problem, particularly with cars that suddenly stop. XNGP’s ability to deal with such circumstances has improved. Now when a vehicle suddenly stops in front of the car the XNGP system deals with it far more calmly and without an emergency stop. Another common scenario that can give smart driving systems difficulty is where there is an obstacle in the road but also a double yellow line. Most systems will simply refuse to drive or take any action due to the double yellow line. With the new upgrade to XNGP the car will overtake if possible even when faced with the line.
Another new capability for the XNGP system is the ability to deal with ETC gates on highways for paying the toll. The system can now drive smoothly through them without the need for a driver takeover.

Parking ability has been strengthened with the addition of tracking and reversing. Now XNGP has the 2.0 system for parking when not in the car and this greatly improves the success rate of parking.
Xpeng is keen to point out that the system does not replace human drivers completely and that the driver still needs to supervise and take over where necessary. In August last year, the company said it had the technical ability to open the whole country. From January 2024 unlimited XNGP has been open to some media and car owners, however this is now being opened to everyone.
Li Liyun, head of autonomous driving at Xpeng Motors, has said that not all smart driving systems are the same and that there are two development paths. Some companies use a whitelist approach where only certain roads in cities are open along with the system only being open to certain users. For others, there is a blacklist where all areas except secret areas are open and it is open to all users. Xpeng Is of the latter group. The system is available on all Max versions of Xpeng models including the P7i, G6, G9 and X9.

Editor’s note:

Last year we got to experience the initial version of Xpeng’s XNGP and were quite impressed by the way it worked on the city roads in Shanghai but were less impressed when experiencing it in Guangzhou. One issue we did have in Shanghai was when the car made a U-turn. While it didn’t necessarily make a bad job of it, it went into a lane and then had to immediately do another lane change to get into the correct lane to enter a tunnel. We are interested to see whether the new system improves such situations. Equally in Guangzhou at one point we had to take over because a car blocked the road and we had to overtake it. From what we know the new system should be able to handle such a situation.
Sources: Autohome, Fast Technology

I just checked the XNGP 5.20 beta 1 video on Chinese social media.

I can say it's really impressive!

On par with Huawei ADS or perhaps more.

The video shows several abilities like riding on narrow road full of motorcycles, pedestrians, and a truck sudden stop in the middle of the road, XNGP is able to handle all of it perfectly.

It can also make a U turn by itself. Usually, many autonomous driving systems fail on this one, especially Huawei ADS, because it doesn't have lidar sensor at the side of the car, it's kinda a blind spot. When a certain scenario requires a U-turn, the car asks the driver to take control of the car.

I also like Xpeng feature to remind the driver to take his smartphone if he forgets when leaving the car. This is very helpful.

Li Auto held its 2024 Intelligent Driving Summer Conference on the evening of July 5. The major announcement was the nationwide opening of NOA to all drivers with the Max version of Li models. This now uses a VLM (visual language model) and is no longer dependent on mapping or prior information. Furthermore Li Auto claimed that its driving assistance system helped users avoid 360,000 potential accidents in the first half of 2024 and that the false trigger rate was less than one time per 300,000 km.

The version 6 OTA will be pushed to drivers of Li Auto Max version cars this month and will include the new version of NOA, AES (Automatic Emergency Steering), and improvements to AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking). Initially, the system was trialed with 1,000 experienced users in May this year and was then expanded to 10,000 in June. After the new OTA 240,000 AD Max owners will be able to use the system.
System in use at an intersection
With the new smart driving system for Li Auto the NOA no longer relies on high-precision maps or prior information. New architecture consists of an end-to-end VLM (Visual Language Model) and a world model. The VLM has strong logical thinking ability and can understand complex road situations, navigation maps, and traffic rules. Along with coping with difficult or even unknown scenarios It can build and test its capabilities in a virtual environment built on the real world. The end result is a system that can make inference calculations more efficiently and drive in a more human-like manner.

Helping drive the new system is Nobel Prize-winning Daniel Kahneman’s theory of fast and slow systems. In the context of smart driving, this has a fast system, or system one, which is good at handling simple tasks and is formed by experience and habit and this is capable of dealing with 95% of routine scenarios when driving a car. On the other hand, the slow system or system 2 is good at logical reasoning, complex analysis of situations, and has a calculation ability, that with humans is through deeper understanding and learning. This can be used to solve complex or unknown traffic scenarios. When driving a vehicle this would usually account for about 5% of daily driving. In Li’s VLM, system 1 and system 2 work together to ensure high efficiency in most scenarios and this forms the basis of an efficient end-to-end model.
System in use on a country road
What this all means in practice is it no longer relies on high-precision maps or prior information and has joint spatiotemporal planning to predict the interaction between the car and other vehicles, screen out the optical obstacle avoidance trajectory, and bring a smoother obstacle bypass experience. It allows the system to operate on roads across the country including narrow roads and country roads. Using the sensors, including Lidar, it builds up an ultra-long line sight for navigation and road selection which allows for higher perception accuracy.
AEB has been expanded into a low-speed environment and it now provides 360-degree active safety protection for parking and low-speed driving scenarios. Complex basement parking environments can provide a challenge due to obstacles such as pillars, pedestrians, and other vehicles thereby increasing the risk of scratching. Low-speed AEB can effectively identify the risk of forward, backward, and lateral collisions and brake accordingly.

AEB use during parking in an underground carpark
AEB’s ability to deal with complex intersections has also been improved. This can cope with pedestrians, two-wheelers, and tricycles approaching from the left, right, and front in order to achieve full frontal coverage. Along with activating the brake in a situation where there might be a collision with such users, it will also break if there is a vehicle in the blind spot of the car. Another improvement with AEB is its ability to deal with obstacles at night. For example when driving on a dark highway and there is a stationary container truck without lights or reflectors the AEB system can brake a car equipped with AD Max from a speed of 120 km/h.
AEB intersection scenarios
Li’s Max version cars now also offer AES (Automatic Emergency Steering). Where the car is not able to brake in time the car will now try to steer past the problem and avoid an accident.
Max refers to the versions of Li models equipped with Lidar and includes versions of the L6, L7, L8, L9 and Mega.

Today, July 5, the Geely Galaxy E5 officially opened pre-sales priced between 123,000 and 157,000 yuan (16,900 – 21,600 USD). The car will be officially launched in August and sales and deliveries will also begin that month. With pre-sales beginning there are five different configurations available.

An all-electric SUV the Geely Galaxy E5 measures in at 4615, 1901, 1670 mm (l/w/h) with a wheelbase of 2750 mm. It is a modern-looking SUV and has design elements including a tiger face, tiger eyes and tiger whiskers at the front where there is a closed front grille which helps reduce the drag coefficient of the E5. As is common with electric cars the Galaxy E5 has hidden door handles. At the back, there is a through-type taillight and a spoiler on top of the tailgate while underneath the car we see a scuff guard.
Inside the front of the car, there is a large floating central infotainment screen, an LCD instrument panel, and a head-up display. The steering wheel Is flat-bottomed and has a two-spoke design. Powering the car’s HMI is the Dragon Eagle-1 a domestically produced 7 nm automotive chip and it runs the Flyme Auto HMI system, provided by Meizu. Using the system the car has an AI capability and supports functions such as voice control, text, and music. Despite being a relatively compact SUV the interior space is quite large with the usable area reaching 4.03 square meters and the lighting area is 3.39 square meters. Space Utilization is 67.2%.

Range is one of the main dividing factors between the different Galaxy E5 versions. There are two different sized battery capacities of 49.52 and 60.22 kWh which give the car ranges of 440 and 530 km respectively using the CLTC testing cycle. The Galaxy E5 is the first car to use Geely’s new generation Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate batteries. Furthermore, the E5 has CTB battery-to-body integration which helps reduce the weight while increasing the strength of the car. Geely claims a 50:50 weight distribution for the E5. It uses Geely’s self-developed G-TCS all-weather drive anti-skid system which helps control the torque of the electric motor based on road adhesion to maintain road holding at all times.
There is only one powertrain available on the Geely Galaxy E5, a 160 kW electric motor. This is an 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive system that includes eleven major components such as the motor, electronic controls, and reducer all in one system. The volume is only 72 liters and the weight is 79.8 kilograms. It claims a comprehensive efficiency of 90.04% and a minimum power consumption of only 11.9 kWh/100 km. High communication efficiency and fast power response come from the Infineon TC397 power chip which is part of the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive system. There is four-speed Intelligent energy recovery and this maintains a continuous linear change of breaking force in real time according to factors such as vehicle distance, the degree of road congestion, etc. so that occupants do not get motion sickness. Acceleration time is 6.9 seconds while the top speed is 180 km/h. The car rides on the Geely Electric Architecture (GEA) platform which is derived from Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).
For further details we will have to await the official launch in August. The Galaxy E5 has been developed as a world car and we know that right-hand drive versions have simultaneously been tested. Therefore we should expect exports to start within the next year with the Southeast Asian and the Australian markets as prime candidates for sales.

July 5 marks the first day of the EU imposing additional tariffs on Chinese EVs imported into the zone. These are in addition to 10% tariffs that already existed. Both Nio and Xpeng cooperated with the EU investigation but did not receive an individual tariff and are so subject to the 20.8% tariff levied on such companies. The initial response of both companies seems to be business as usual with no changes. However, this may change as Xpeng is investigating the possibility of producing in Europe. The tariffs which commenced today, and are slightly lower than originally expected, are meant to be a temporary measure until final tariffs are implemented in November 2024.

Nio said that it will maintain its pricing strategy in Europe and reevaluate it according to the progress of the tariff policy. Earlier this year in the first quarter 2024 earnings conference William Li, Nio’s CEO, said that Europe accounted for a relatively low proportion of overall sales for Nio and so the tariffs would have little impact on Nio’s operations in the short term. In the long term, Nio will formulate a reasonable strategy according to the adjustments of the tariff policy.
Xpeng on the other hand has only promised to honor current customers waiting for deliveries and customers who have placed orders before the new tariffs came into effect, not subjecting them to any price increases. Furthermore, Xpeng is evaluating the feasibility of establishing a manufacturing base in Europe.

Under the temporary tariffs which came into effect on July 5, SAIC and companies that did not cooperate in the investigation will be subject to a tariff of 37.6%. BYD is subject to 17.4% and Geely 19.9% while for the other companies who cooperated with the investigation, they are subject to a 20.8% tariff on the import to the EU of all EVs. The EU intends to have a final policy ready by November 2024.
Nio’s cumulative sales in the European market in 2023 were 2,399 cars. Currently, Nio has 43 battery swapping stations and 45 supercharging piles across the region, although purchasers have access to more than 600,000 third-party chargers. Currently in Europe, Nio sells the ET7, ET5, EL6, EL7, ET5T and recently introduced the EL8. The EL8, known in China as the Nio ES8, was recently officially launched in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark. The price is significantly more expensive than in China with the 75 kWh version of the Nio EL8 being sold in Germany for 94,900 Euro (102,700 USD) compared with 498,000 yuan (68,500 USD) in China (see specs).
Xpeng officially entered the German market in March this year with the Xpeng G9 and P7. The company also sells in Scandinavia and France with plans to enter markets including Italy and the UK. Xpeng aims to achieve a 3% market share within the German new energy vehicle market by the end of this year and it has 12 local dealers with 24 retail locations within Germany.

Both Nio and Xpeng are also expanding outside Europe with both recently trying to enter the UAE market. Xpeng, in addition, is expanding into Southeast Asian markets and some other Middle Eastern markets.

Avatr 08 (E16) four-door coupe jointly developed by Changan, Huawei, and CATL was seen in China during road tests. It will hit the domestic market this year with a price range of 230,000 – 330,000 yuan (31,650 – 45,400 USD).

Avatr was initially established as a JV between Changan New Energy and Nio in 2018. Later, Nio distanced from the JV. William Li’s startup was replaced by CATL. Currently, Changan holds the majority share in Avatr. It is also responsible for manufacturing. Huawei isn’t a shareholder in the Avatr project. Instead, it acts as the leading supplier. The current Avatr model line consists of two models: the 11 SUV (see specs) and the 12 hatchback (see specs). This year, Avatr will launch two more cars: the 07 SUV and the 08 four-door coupe.

Avatr 08 exposed

The Avatr 08 is also known by its codename E16. According to Huawei’s leaked product planning, it is positioned as an entry-level car in the brand’s lineup. It will enter the market this year with a price range of 230,000 – 330,000 yuan (31,650 – 45,400 USD). Another feature of the Avatr 08 is two available powertrain options: BEV and EREV (range extender).

The Avatr 08 spotted in China follows the design language of the 12 hatchback. It has a sloped bonnet line with distinguishing running light strips. Similar to the Avatr 07, it has a LiDAR sensor on the roof. The E16 is a four-door coupe. It has retractable door handles, a sleek roofline, and two thin taillight units. The Avatr 08 has conventional side-view mirrors. However, it may get optional side-view cameras. The 08 also has five-spoke rims, similar to the Avatr 12.
Avatr 08 render images prepared by SugarDesign
Chinese designer SugarDesign prepared unofficial render images of the Avatr 08. He pictured the car with an active air intake in the front bumper, an active rear spoiler, and yellow brake calipers. The 08 also has glossy plastic trim around the lower part of the body. This four-door coupe looks quite close to the Avatr 12.

Avatr 08 powertrain options

The Avatr 08 stands on the CHN platform jointly developed by Changan, Huawei, and CATL. It also underpins Avatr 11, Avatr 12, and Avatr 07. As mentioned the E16 will get two powertrain variants. The first one is BEV. It will most likely adopt the electric motors of the Avatr 07 SUV. In this case, the Avatr 08 RWD will offer 252 kW (338 hp) of power. And the 4WD variant will have two e-motors for 440 kW (590 hp).

The Avatr 08 will also be available for purchase as an EREV. It will likely get a single e-motor for 231 kW (310 hp) in the rear axle, and a 1.5-liter turbocharged ICE for 115 kW (154 h). The 4WD variant of the Avatr 08 EREV could be equipped with two electric motors for 362 kW (485 hp).

After the unveiling of the Xpeng Mona M03, spy shots have emerged of another new Xpeng likely to see production this year. Codenamed F57 the car is believed to be called the Xpeng P6 and is a 4-door coupe. From the pictures, it looks as if it will be a fastback style and according to previous reports will come in 550, 600 and 700 km range versions.

Currently, the car is still heavily camouflaged, however, we can see that at the front it has a low hood and that it seems to have a fairly sleek style similar to that of the Xpeng P7 and the Mona M03. The light clusters appear to be mounted quite low and are possibly T-shaped as with the Mona M03. The area is also likely to house Lidar units which is the common location on Xpeng vehicles. From the side we can see that there are hidden door handles and it seems that there are frameless doors. The roofline at the back gradually flows down to the tail making us believe that this is a fastback style car.
Overall the visual center of gravity is biased towards the rear. Various bulges can be seen from the spy shots and these are foam material used in the disguise; the actual car should be much smoother. It is possible that the foam is making the car look like a fastback when it is in fact just a sedan. A shot of the Michelin tires shows us that the car is shod with 21-inch wheels.

If the numbering system is to be believed then the P6, if this car is called P6, must fit somewhere between the P5 and P7 in terms of size. However, there is already very little difference in length between the two cars the P5 (see specs) being 4860 mm and the P7 (see specs) 4888 mm. The main difference is the wheelbase which for the smaller car is 2768 mm and for the P7 2998 mm. We can expect the new car to be based on the SEPA 2.0 platform and so likely have a much longer wheelbase than the P5.
There are also spy shots of the interior of the Xpeng P6 and we can see that the car has a similar style to other members of the Xpeng family. It has a centrally mounted infotainment screen and we can see rising up to it wireless phone charging pads behind which there are dual cup holders and a rear opening cubbyhole. The center console is a floating design with another storage compartment underneath the wireless phone charging pads. Due to the angle of the spy shot we can currently tell little more about the interior other than that drive selection will be via a steering wheel column-mounted stalk. Presumably, as with other Xpeng cars it will not feature a head-up display.
The P6 will be an all-electric car and will be available with three different ranges 550, 600, and 700 kilometers. From the pictures, it is possible that the new car will have air suspension.

According to a road map previously exposed 2024 should be a busy year for Xpeng with five cars due to release before 2025. However, it looks as if cars will not be actually following the timeline in the roadmap. We now know that the F59 car shown in that road map is the Mona M03, SOP for that was put at December 2024, however, it is due to go on sale much sooner than that. Also by now we should have seen the G7 codenamed E39. This new SUV is scheduled to be produced in Xpeng’s Guangzhou factory and should have SOP in Q3. Presumably, a number of the cars on the road map will now not launch sales until 2025. Coming in 2026 we can expect the first model being jointly developed by Xpeng and Volkswagen to launch, it will be an SUV of a similar size to the Xpeng G9.
The Xpeng P6 should be launched before the end of the year and could be part of Xpeng’s drive to expand sales in Europe.

The Lynk & Co Z10 sedan reached dealers ahead of the sales start in China. It is the first electric car from the Lynk & Co brand backed by Volvo and Geely. The car has already applied for a sales license in China, so it is ready to launch.

Lynk & Co is a joint brand between Geely and Volvo established in 2017. It sells a single model (01 SUV) internationally. However, it has a diverse model line in the domestic market. It currently sells even cars with PHEV and ICE powertrain options. Soon, the brand’s lineup will get an electric sedan called Z10.

Lynk & Co Z10 reached dealers

Lynk & Co Z10 sedans arrived at dealers in China
The Lynk & Co Z10 sedan has arrived at the brand’s showrooms across China for display. It is currently unavailable for purchase. However, we can see its styling is in line with the model approved by the Chinese regulator. It stays in line with the design language of the Lynk & Co The Next Day concept car with thin running lights, a trapeze-shaped grille, and a sleek body shape.

The Lynk & Co Z10 has a LiDAR sensor on the roof, retractable door handles, and an active spoiler. Because it has a slanted roof, it looks like a liftback. However, it is a sedan with an independent boot. The Z10 boasts hefty dimensions of 5028/1966/1468 mm with a wheelbase of 3005 mm. It is slightly bigger than the Xiaomi SU7.
Inside, the Lynk & Co Z10 has a huge 15.4-inch floating touchscreen and a funky two-spoke D-shaped steering wheel. A thin LCD instrument cluster, a HUD, and a gear shifter sit behind the wheel. The center tunnel of the Z10 looks quite minimalistic with two wireless charging pads and hidden compartments.

More about Lynk & Co Z10

The Lynk & Co Z10 stands on the SEA modular architecture. The same platform and its offshoots underpin every Zeekr car, new Smart EVs, LEVC L380, Polestar 4, and lots of other models. The entry-level Z10 has a single e-motor for 268 hp (200 KW) supplying power to the rear axle. There is also a 4WD variant with 684 hp (510 kW).

Other features of the Z10 powertrain are an 800V high-voltage system and LFP batteries. The maximum range of the Lyn & Co sedan reaches 800 km. It can charge up to 573 km in 15 minutes. Its zero-to-hundred acceleration time is just 3.5 seconds. It was reported the Z10 sedan will feature dual-chamber air suspension and a CDC damping system.
The Lynk & Co Z10 will enter the Chinese market in September with a starting price of 200,000 yuan (27,600 USD). Later, this car can go overseas.

Previously, only the Denza Z9 GT’s exterior was revealed to the public. On July 5, the interior of the Denza Z9 GT made its debut, which adopts the Denza 2.0 cockpit design. Positioned as the flagship shooting brake model of the Denza brand, the car is available in pure electric and plug-in hybrid variants. The official launch is expected to be later this year.

Pure electric variantPlug-in hybrid variant
Let’s briefly review the exterior. Since the Denza Z9 GT is available in two variants, its front face also offers two different styles for consumers to choose from. The car adopts a low body posture, combined with frameless electric suction doors, hidden door handles, charging port logo lights, digital exterior mirrors, and an electric rear wing. All doors can be opened manually or electrically. The car runs on 20/21-inch rims, matched with metallic copper brake calipers.
The declared information indicates that the Denza Z9 GT measures 5180/1990/1500 (1480) mm, and the wheelbase is 3125 mm. In addition, the Denza Z9 GT offers multiple lidar options and is likely to come with advanced driving assistance capabilities.

Inside, there are two interior color schemes: white and burgundy. An LCD instrument panel, a large central control screen, and a co-pilot entertainment screen are all present. The specific screen size has not been announced at this time. The air-conditioning outlets are also hidden.
The center console features a crystal gear lever, cup holders, and dual 50 W wireless charging panels. At the same time, there is a Devialet speaker on the dashboard.

Li Auto’s deliveries soared 47% to 47,774 vehicles in June from a year earlier in China. Launched in April, the Li Auto L6 (see specs) quickly became Li Auto’s best seller. It is a mid-size 5-seater EREV SUV starting at 249,800 yuan (34,400 USD). Despite being Li Auto’s smallest car, the Li Auto L6 has dimensions of 4925/1960/1735 mm and a wheelbase of 2920 mm.

Lei asking for 500,000 likesReached 500,000 likesPicking the green Li L6
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun is the most notable figure who bought the Li Auto L6. On 27 April, he announced to his 20 million followers on his Douyin social media account (the Chinese version of TikTok) that he would order the L6 SUV if more than 500,000 liked his video. On the same night, the target was reached, and Lei bought a green L6 the following day, praising its luxury and building quality. Rumors about Lei Jun’s purchase are that the L6 will be studied to develop Xiaomi’s first SUV, the MX11. Rumors aside. So why has the Li Auto L6 become one of China’s favorite SUVs? Let’s find out together on this week’s Sunday China Drive!
First Impressions

The Li Auto L6 SUV shares design elements with its larger siblings, the L7, L8, and L9. It features separate daytime running lights, an air intake, and sensors. Muscular fenders and sleek lines along the sides visually connect the front and rear, with retractable door handles, enhancing the Li L6’s sturdy appearance.
The aerodynamic edge at the rear contours the bumper, improving aerodynamic performance. The rear has a continuous taillight. It has shortened front and rear overhangs for a sportier appearance. Closing the doors sounded solid. All the panels are aligned, and the paint looks well-finished.
The Interior

Once you enter the Li Auto L6 SUV, you will immediately notice the comfortable sofa-like car seats equipped with advanced features such as ventilation, heating, and a massage function with ten acupressure points.
The interior has a two-tone theme and uses premium materials, including Nappa leather. The cockpit adopts a four-screen design consisting of a central control screen, a co-pilot entertainment screen, a safety driving interaction screen, and a HUD. The dual 15.7-inch central control and co-pilot entertainment screens have a 3K resolution and are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip. The displays were smooth and quick without any lag.
It has an adjustable electric steering wheel with heating and grip sensors. Other configurations include a 19-speaker audio system, two 50W wireless charging panels, and a panoramic sunroof with an electric sunshade. Additionally, the L6 Max is equipped with an 8.8 L refrigerator that can achieve 0°C —7°C cooling and 35°C —50°C heating; 0.5 kWh of electricity is consumed per day.
All seats are electrically adjustable, and the rear seats are heated. The front-row headroom is 1,033 mm. The car provides ample space for the rear passengers, offering a headroom of 968 mm and a maximum second-row legroom of 1,135 mm.
Storage
The Li Auto L6 features a trunk with a depth of 1057 mm, providing a volume of 491 liters. With the one-click electric folding rear seats, the trunk volume can reach 1923 liters.
Behind the Wheel
Our test car is the top-trimmed Li L6 Max, priced at 279,800 yuan (38,700 USD) with 265/45 R21 wheels. The family SUV is comfortable to drive on the suburban roads in Zhuhai. Visibility is excellent. The double-glazed windows provide a quiet cabin, and the HUD displays detailed information. While the steering was smooth when turning corners, there was very little feedback on the steering wheel. Considering its size, it is quite nimble when making turns.
As we went on the highway at speeds around 100 km/h, the L6 SUV began hopping like a bunny. Wait, we were not driving BYD’s Yangwang U9 supercar, which bunny hops on three wheels. I quickly asked the Li Auto rep to adjust the suspensions to become firmer, and then the car drove normally. Unlike its siblings with air suspensions, the L6 SUV has a continuous damping control (CDC) system with double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspensions.
The L6 SUV provided acceleration when overtaking. Despite its gross weight of 2820 kg, the dual-motor with an intelligent all-wheel-drive system delivers 300 kW with 529 Nm torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.4 seconds. Surprisingly, it is faster than the BYD Sea Lion 07 we reported last week. It is equipped with a 1.5-litre 113-kW petrol engine that acts like a generator. The L6 is the first Li Auto model to adopt the LFP battery. Its top speed is 180 km/h.
The Li L6 Max accurately detected surrounding objects, adjusted its speed, changed lanes, and made U-turns. There were occasions when I had to take over. Featuring the Li AD Max system with dual Orin-X chips providing 508 TOPS computing power, these advanced technologies and future updates enhance its autonomous driving capabilities and expand city NOA coverage nationwide. The auto parking was fast and accurate.
The Li Auto L6 is a feature-packed medium to large SUV that offers a comfortable ride. However, it is not an engaging car to drive, nor should we expect it to.
Battery Range
The Li Auto L6 features Li Auto’s range extension system and the latest lithium iron phosphate battery technology. It offers a CLTC range of 1,390 kilometers and 212 kilometers under EV mode.
Safety Features
  • Standard nine airbags and comprehensive collision testing guarantee robust safety.
  • The continuously improving AEB active safety system enhances protection for family road trips.
Dealership Experience
I just finished lunch alone in a shopping mall in Zhuhai. With some spare time, I wandered into the Li Auto booth displaying the L8, L7, and L6. While inspecting the L6 SUV, a Li Auto rep approached me, and we chatted for a while. I was offered a test drive of the L6 SUV. Within minutes, the Li Auto rep organized the papers for the test drive, and off we went. The Li Auto rep accompanied me on the test drive. He explained the details of the car. It was a present experience.
Conclusion
The Li Auto L6 may be the smallest and most affordable SUV in the Li Auto line-up, yet it remains a well-balanced premium SUV. With a CLTC range of 1,390 kilometers and 212 kilometers under EV mode, the L6 SUV is ideal for family trips.
Li Auto, known for EREV crossovers, announced its first electric crossover will launch in early 2025 instead of later this year. The delay is due to poor sales of the Li Mega MPV and the need for more fast charging stations. An estimated 10,000 units will be sold monthly, requiring 500-600 showcase booths to boost sales.
Li Auto opened its first overseas after-sales service center in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in late June, with an official launch planned for July. This supports over 1,000 Li Auto vehicles in the region. Li Auto also plans to open after-sales service centers in Central Asia and the Middle East.
Li Auto CEO Xiang Li stated earlier that his company will focus on the Chinese domestic market before 2025, hinting that their cars may begin selling overseas next year. It remains to be seen if Li Mega’s underperformance affects Li Auto’s expansion plans besides postponing the release of its EV, S01. Meanwhile, private exporters have sent Li Auto vehicles to Central Asia and the Middle East, which are likely to be Li Auto’s initial retail export targets.
Stay tuned for next week’s Sunday China Drive at Car News China, where you can get more evaluations of Chinese cars from a first-person perspective.
