Goldman Sachs Says China Biotech Is Where Big Pharma Is Shopping Now

Big pharma is sourcing assets from China biotech as $440 billion of drugs lose patents through 2032, Goldman Sachs says. Salveen Richter, the bank’s lead US biotech analyst, says Chinese rivals could shorten product cycles at Western drugmakers.

Yet China’s five-year pharma plan, published Sept. 18, targets at least 25% of global first-in-class drugs by 2030. Those are medicines that work through a new mechanism rather than improving an existing drug.

AstraZeneca agreed last week to invest $2 billion in US-listed Summit Therapeutics. Summit licenses its lead cancer drug from China’s Akeso.

Overseas licensing deals for Chinese drugs have reached more than $120 billion in total value this year, Xinhua reported. That is up 36% from a year earlier.

With FDA approval, Eli Lilly’s BTK drug Jaypirca enters first-line CLL

Eli Lilly’s Jaypirca, the first noncovalent BTK inhibitor, has won FDA approval for the first-line treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL).

Friday’s approval follows Jaypirca’s FDA approval in 2023 as a third-line therapy for CLL/SLL and a follow-on go-ahead in the second-line setting, making it the fourth BTK inhibitor cleared for previously untreated CLL/SLL.

Before Friday’s FDA green light, Jaypirca had already secured market authorization in the European Union across all lines of therapy.

Jaypirca® (pirtobrutinib) Approved in China for a New Indication in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) /Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma (SLL) Across All Lines of Therapy

SAN FRANCISCO and SUZHOU, China, Sept. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Innovent Biologics, Inc. ("Innovent") (HKEX: 01801), a world-class biopharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, and commercializes high-quality medicines for the treatment of oncology, autoimmune, cardiovascular and metabolic, ophthalmology and other major disease areas, announced that the China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has approved Jaypirca® (pirtobrutinib, 100 mg & 50 mg tablets), a non-covalent Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor, as a monotherapy for the treatment of adult patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL). This NMPA action expands the Jaypirca® indication to include patients with CLL/SLL across all lines of therapy and regardless of prior covalent BTK inhibitor treatment.

Jaypirca®, a highly selective kinase inhibitor, utilizes a novel non-covalent binding mechanism to target the BTK pathway in patients with CLL/SLL. It has been evaluated across multiple clinical studies in patients with CLL/SLL who were either previously treated with a covalent BTK inhibitor or who were BTK inhibitor-naïve, generating clinical evidence supporting its use across different CLL/SLL treatment settings.

The approval is supported by data from the global Phase 3 BRUIN CLL-313 and BRUIN CLL-314 clinical trials. BRUIN CLL-313 is the first prospective, randomized Phase 3 study to examine the efficacy and safety of a non-covalent BTK inhibitor in patients with treatment-naïve CLL/SLL. In BRUIN CLL-313, the study demonstrated a statistically significant benefit in independent review committee (IRC)-assessed progression-free survival (PFS) for pirtobrutinib compared with bendamustine plus rituximab (BR) (HR=0.199), representing an 80.1% reduction in the risk of disease progression or death[1]. BRUIN CLL-314 is the first head-to-head Phase 3 CLL/SLL trial to compare covalent and non-covalent BTK inhibitors in a BTK inhibitor-naïve population, which included relapsed and refractory and treatment-naïve patients. In BRUIN CLL-314, the study met its primary endpoint of noninferiority for overall response rate (ORR) in both the intent-to-treat (ITT) population and previously treated patients. Pirtobrutinib achieved a numerically higher ORR compared to ibrutinib. Although PFS data remain immature, a trend toward PFS benefit was observed[2]. Together, these two studies support the clinical value of pirtobrutinib across the CLL/SLL treatment continuum.

Iberdomide Approved in China: The World’s First CELMoD Drug for Multiple Myeloma

On September 30, 2026, information published on the official website of China’s NMPA showed that Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) had received approval in China for its innovative drug, iberdomide hydrochloride capsules, for the treatment of multiple myeloma

As the first approved CELMoD drug worldwide, iberdomide marks a new step in multiple myeloma treatment, with iberdomide approved in China advancing the clinical use of this emerging drug class.

In this article, DengYueMed explores iberdomide’s mechanism of action, key clinical data, and the significance of CELMoD technology, examining its potential impact on the development of multiple myeloma treatment.

Iberdomide hydrochloride capsules are an oral CELMoD drug developed by Bristol Myers Squibb, with clinical development primarily focused on multiple myeloma.

In August 2026, iberdomide received accelerated approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), becoming the world’s first approved CELMoD drug[2]. It was subsequently approved in China in September.

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals Granted Entry in the FDA STAR Pilot Program for Plozasiran in Severe Hypertriglyceridemia

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2026-- Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARWR) today announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted plozasiran entry in the Split Real Time Application Review (STAR) pilot program in connection with Arrowhead’s upcoming supplemental new drug application (sNDA) for severe hypertriglyceridemia (sHTG). SHTG is a condition that significantly increases the risk of acute pancreatitis, which is associated with repeated hospital admissions and can be fatal.

The FDA STAR pilot program aims to shorten the time from the date of a complete sNDA submission to the action date for certain supplemental indications for already-approved drugs. To be granted entry in the STAR program, FDA must determine that clinical evidence from adequate and well-controlled investigation(s) indicates that the drug may demonstrate substantial improvement on a clinically relevant endpoint(s) over available therapies.

Once accepted into the STAR program, a supplemental application qualifies for a 6-month Priority Review compared to a 10-month standard review. In addition, FDA will generally target an “expedited review” for efficacy supplements in the STAR program, meaning an action at least 1 month before the Priority Review goal date is possible. The use of a Priority Review Voucher (PRV) is not necessary for programs that are granted entry in the STAR program, so Arrowhead retains the PRV previously purchased in August 2026.

“We are committed to pursuing every potential opportunity to accelerate the process of bringing plozasiran to patients, and the FDA STAR Pilot program provides important benefits to sponsors with efficacy supplements,” said Christopher Anzalone, Ph.D., President and CEO at Arrowhead. “In addition, earning Priority Review for plozasiran without the need to use a PRV gives us the option to redeploy our voucher for a future application or monetize it.”

Arrowhead is on schedule to submit a sNDA for plozasiran in sHTG to the FDA by year-end 2026 and plans to seek regulatory approval with additional global regulatory authorities thereafter. Plozasiran has received regulatory approval, as REDEMPLO®, in the United States, the European Union, China, Australia, and Canada as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerides in adults with genetically confirmed or clinically diagnosed familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS), which is the most severe form of sHTG.

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals Announces NMPA Approval of REDEMPLO® (plozasiran) for Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (FCS) in China

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARWR) today announced that the Chinese National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has approved REDEMPLO® (plozasiran) for the reduction of triglyceride levels in adult patients with familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS). FCS is a severe, rare disease characterized by triglyceride levels that can be 10 to 100 times higher than normal leading to a substantially higher risk of developing acute, recurrent, and potentially fatal pancreatitis.

REDEMPLO will be marketed in Greater China by Sanofi under an agreement between Sanofi and Arrowhead. In 2025, Sanofi purchased those rights from Visirna, a majority-owned subsidiary of Arrowhead created to develop and commercialize four of Arrowhead’s investigational cardiometabolic candidates in Greater China.

Approval in China marks the third regulatory approval for REDEMPLO, following recent approvals by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada, as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerides in adults with FCS. REDEMPLO is also in review for marketing authorization by additional global regulatory authorities.

REDEMPLO is the first and only U.S. FDA-approved, Health Canada-approved, and China NMPA-approved siRNA medicine for people living with FCS and can be self-administered at home with a simple subcutaneous injection once every three months.

“NMPA approval of REDEMPLO for FCS in China is another positive step and continues the strong momentum since launching in the U.S. in November 2025. We look forward to working with Sanofi, an innovative global company with an established presence in China,” said Christopher Anzalone, Ph.D., President and CEO at Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals. “We are happy to report encouraging initial response from physicians and patients following FDA approval and launch in the U.S. last month. We intend to continue building on this rapid progress and anticipate additional commercial launches in 2026, pending regulatory review and approval.”
