China hits back at Canada with fresh agriculture tariffs

Eventually, when Trump has put up the chips for exchange, China will still buy American soybeans. Otherwise, American farmers will not grow soybeans next, and Brazil's soybeans will be unscrupulously priced.

The essence of the soybean issue is that the Chinese government is trading fentanyl taxes for the votes of American farmers.
Fentanyl drugs are purely an American problem. China only sells raw materials that are used to make many chemical products but some drug dealers can also use them to make fentanyl drugs, so Americans want China to stop selling all the raw materials used in the industries all together ? Lol, and the Yanks they don't want to do anything to curtail the fentanyl drugs circulations and consumptions in US, they want China to clean their shits for them. China should just tell Yanks fentanyl drugs are just their own problem and why it is no issue in other countries, China should not compromise this for Trump's blackmail drug tariffs.

I agree in the long term, its better for China to have at least two large soy beans suppliers, so China can get good deals. China should also reduce its dependence of foreign soy beans by planting more of the crops.

The US government is well aware that China won't give all the soybean orders to Brazil, but Trump dare not bet on the red-neck vote And Li Chenggang's negotiating team is good at destroying the psychological defense of the negotiating opponent, I guess this time he will fold the list of conditions into a paper airplane throw it in the face of Bersent. Just like what the Americans did to the Japanese in the Plaza Agreement negotiations.

Looks like Li Chenggang will give Bessent and company good run for US money. Last time Bessent was pissed off by Li.

During the previous negotiations, Li Chenggang was just a vice minister. And Bessent was the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. The government thought that the positions were not equal, so they withdrew Li Chenggang's vice minister level position, then appointed Li Chenggang to a new full minister level position and continued to preside over the negotiations.

However, Bessent seemed to think that he had a few words that got Li Chenggang dismissed. The U.S. seems to have little understanding of the process by which Chinese officials are promoted. They don't even know that Chinese officials must first withdraw from their current positions before they can be promoted.

Yeah, Bessent, the MAGA and anti-China clowns were celebrating that Li was dismissed by Xi Jin Ping because of Bessent's remarks few days ago, haha. Li is known as a tough negotiator in those years he represented China at WTO and UN, that what is needed to deal with US, not like Trump's first term Chinese team being soft.

So what was Bessent's expression when he saw the delegation led by Li Chenggang in Malaysia? Hahaha. This is really not the Chinese govt playing with him, but Americans know too little about China.

However, Bessent need not fear Li Chenggang too much. By Chinese government practice, a single official is rarely left in charge of a negotiating delegation for more than a year. Bessent need only hold on until next April, and there is a strong likelihood that Li Chenggang will be moved on.

Of, that is only practice, and practice can be changed, and Li Chenggang could remain in the post for even longer. More to the point, Li Chenggang has promoted because of his negotiating style, and one assumes that if new officials were to succeed him, they might well continue with his style?

If Li Chenggang does a good job dealing with US, don't see why the Chinese gov won't keep him in the position much longer like until the end of Trump's term.

The fact that officials cannot serve in the same position for an extended period of time was established as a rule of the official system in China as early as Han Dynasty 2,300 years ago.

In modern China, different positions have different maximum terms of office. For example, a negotiation delegation leader usually serves for year, and even the most marginal position is unlikely to exceed 10 years. Moreover, officials cannot serve in the same level position for more than 15 years.

The purposes of these rules are several:

one is to cultivate more and more comprehensive talents, and to keep the leadership team motivated.

The second is to reduce the possibility of corrupt behavior, to avoid the emergence of large interest groups.

The third is that the institutionalization of the official rotation system can ensure the continuity and stability of policies, and avoid the emergence of people Trump.

Maximum one year for chief negotiator in ministerial position maybe too short. How long is the term for similar US position or other major countries ?

There are too many interests involved in major negotiations, so more control and checks are needed. Also, I personally think that major negotiations are too easy for officials to get promoted. Who would want all the credit to go to one official.

Li Chenggang has been promoted from the deputy ministerial level to the full ministerial level. If he presides over the negotiations in their entirety, wont he soon be promoted to the deputy national level and enter the Politburo? He's only in his fifties, just promoted! If he becomes a deputy national-level leader in his fifties, is he going to be the successor to Xi Jinping?

As for the United States, they have no such rules, and the of the term depends on Trump's mood.

He won't be a good fit for a national leader, I think his entire career is spent as a negotiator or the sort in the ministry of Commerce. He is more like a technocrat professional. not exactly what one looks for as a national leader.

Yes. National leaders should graduate from STEM majors in top domestic universities, have served in multiple positions in different fields, and have experience working in both central departments provincial-level local officials.

And a technical official with a long career in diplomacy will see a vice-national level as the ceiling of his position.

If high end semiconductors cover 20% high tech industries, rare earth materials cover 90%.
That’s a misconception. What’s hightec semiconductor? what lowtec? If not about basic transistors and you look closer the difference is minimal.
Yes, rare earth is super important because is mostly used in magnet to make electromagnetic fields.
But from the news, Germany, Japan and others try to find other materials that capable to produce electromagnetic fields. So the rare earth monopoly China holds now may not last forever.
Should think in the long run.
