China Is Still Winning the Battle for 5G—and 6G, America Must Do More to Compete With Huawei

China launches first Pre-6G test network

Technology14:21, 22-Apr-2026

China's first Pre-6G test network officially began operation on Tuesday in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province. The network integrates 6G innovations into an existing 5G framework and features high bandwidth, long-distance coverage, low-latency deterministic connectivity and built-in AI integration.

Its overall capabilities can reach up to 10 times those of current 5G networks, according to developers.

The test network has already been used for systematic verification in areas, including low-altitude inspections, industrial manufacturing, embodied intelligence and holographic communication.

The launch marks a new stage for China's 6G development, moving from key technology testing to full system capability verification.

It is expected to provide an important foundation for future 6G standardization and commercial applications.

The test network integrates 6G innovative technologies into the existing 5G network and features high bandwidth, long-range coverage, deterministic low latency, and native artificial intelligence (AI) integration, with capabilities reportedly up to 10 times those of 5G, according to CCTV News.

The test network has been conducting systematic verification in areas such as low-altitude inspection, industrial manufacturing, embodied intelligence, and holographic communications. It marks a shift of 6G technology from key technology validation to a new stage of system-level capability verification, laying an important foundation for future 6G standardization and industrial applications, said the report.

There is already 5G-Advanced (5G-A), which is the evolutionary stage of 5G networks, and the emergence of Pre-6G means integrating 6G-related technologies into existing 5G networks to enhance current network capabilities, Ma Jihua, a veteran market analyst, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Ma said that the significance of this kind of trial lies its ability to test and apply certain 6G standards. It also better address the growing demand for more advanced communication technologies from key sectors such as new materials, new energy, the low-altitude economy, and aerospace during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period.

China has already established the world's largest 5G network, with large-scale deployment accelerating in key sectors such as industry, mining, power, and healthcare, according to industry data, which provides a certain foundation for the evolution toward 6G.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Xie Cun, head of the bureau for information and communications development of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that as of the end of March, the total number of 5G base stations across China reached 4.958 million. Meanwhile, 5G-A has now covered 330 cities.

The development of 5G has also driven progress in multiple fields, including AI and the industrial internet, gradually giving rise to future demand for 6G, Ma said. On this basis, through the continuous evolution of 5G and Pre-6G, there is potential to establish a certain first-mover advantage in future 6G standard-setting, the expert said.

According to the 15th Five-Year Plan, the government vows to push forward technological research, product development, enterprise cultivation, and ecosystem building in multiple fields, including 6G technology.

As the country enters the next five-year plan starting this year, new applications such as robotics and AI are expected to emerge, creating more opportunities for the development of 6G technologies and providing stronger momentum for the real economy, said Ma.

Chinese telecommunications operator China Unicom and Chinese multinational technology company Huawei‘s landmark deployment at the 2026 Beijing E-Town event demonstrates what high-uplink network architecture can deliver when the stakes – and the robot runners – are at full sprint.

The connection was lost near the finish line

Man with controller had to run directly behind robot for the last part of the race.

China Mobile Hong Kong Establishes Hong Kong's First U6G Network

Expanding Next-Generation Network Capabilities and Accelerating the Innovative Convergence of Communication, Computing, and AI Laying a Solid Foundation for 6G Development in Hong Kong

HONG KONG, Oct. 17, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited ("China Mobile Hong Kong") announced that it has taken the lead in realising a U6GHz network, successfully completing network testing and validation at its Mong Kok flagship store and advancing the exploration of Upper 6GHz band applications in mobile networks. Implementing China Mobile Group's strategy of "strengthening the network foundation and full-stack innovation", China Mobile Hong Kong aims to enhance network capabilities through new frequency band applications, drive collaborative innovation between terminals and the wider industry, and lay a robust foundation for Hong Kong's future 6G development.

Strategic Early Deployment of New Spectrum to Build Momentum for a 6G Future

U6GHz, or the Upper 6GHz band, can provide continuous wide bandwidth and is a crucial spectrum resource supporting 5G-A and future 6G evolution. On 29 November 2024, Hong Kong completed its 6/7GHz spectrum auction, becoming the first region globally to auction this frequency band for public mobile services. China Mobile Hong Kong successfully bid for 100MHz of continuous spectrum and has made appropriate forward-looking deployments, advancing network capability validation and terminal adaptation to accumulate experience for future 6G commercialisation.

Expanding Network Capacity to Enable Smoother Smart Applications

The newly added U6GHz spectrum can be utilised synergistically with existing frequency bands. Through various combinations with current spectrums, it can achieve download speeds of 3Gbps. The increased availability of spectrum helps enhance data transmission capabilities, accommodating more simultaneous user connections, improving the internet experience in highly congested areas, and supporting high-definition video and large-capacity data transmission.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into production and daily life, the demand for data transmission from devices such as smart glasses and AI robots continues to rise. China Mobile Hong Kong will promote the synergistic development of U6GHz and intelligent computing services, enhance connectivity between terminals and intelligent computing platforms, and explore AI image analysis, immersive interactions, and industrial applications. This will allow smart services to better integrate into everyday life and corporate operations.

Aligning with Mainland China and Hong Kong Blueprints to Consolidate the Foundation of Digital-Intelligent Development

China Mobile Hong Kong will actively align with the Nation's "15th Five-Year Plan" and Hong Kong's first Five-Year Plan. Focusing on "AI+", computing infrastructure, and new industrialisation, the company will enhance communication and smart services through network upgrades to assist Hong Kong in building an international innovation and technology centre. Concurrently, China Mobile Hong Kong will collaborate with industry partners to accelerate the research, development, and testing of U6GHz products. By expanding hotspot coverage according to demand, it aims to drive the maturity of the industrial ecosystem and accelerate Hong Kong's 6G development. Looking ahead, China Mobile Hong Kong will continue to leverage its strengths as a central state-owned enterprise, providing high-quality digital infrastructure to serve Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, thereby fully contributing to the building of a cyber superpower and a digital China.
