Turns out it's because China single-handedly stopped it from hitting – pulled off a set of moves no one thought were possible – changed the history of oil overnight – and did it all in secret. China did it just like in 2008, but it has to be said that these moves are intended to be self serving. Why shouldn't they be after all.

China focuses on the long term goal. A relatively stable global environment allows it to keep doing the winning. If that equation ever falls out of balance and out of its favour, it will re-engage with an adjusted strategy. For now, the goal is to continue making money with the same global system and the goal of this is to continue developing its technology base, infrastructure and industries. The end goal is to dominate every industry and be at the bleeding edge of every piece of technology known to man.

To achieve this, it cannot disturb the business as usual model. It will save the US and global market to whatever extent it can up to the day the price to pay exceeds the net benefit of exporting, having customers, making money, reinvesting in itself as effectively as it can realistically manage.

If that ever gets disrupted to a degree where the trajectory reverses, you'll see a much more "active" and belligerent China, willing to go into conflicts. For now, it prefers this growth and development model that's been serving it very well.
