China has kept its border with Afghanistan closed despite the Taliban administration’s completion of the Wakhan Road, conditioning any reopening of the crossing on security concerns being addressed. Beijing did not attend the road’s inauguration ceremony on Oct. 4 and also declined to formally acknowledge the event diplomatically.

Published images show that barbed wire, surveillance cameras and machine-gun bunkers remain in place on the Chinese side of the border. Satellite images dated Oct. 11 also show that the road built by the Taliban administration stretches to within a few dozen metres of the Chinese border; however, the infrastructure has so far made no change to the status of the crossing.

Zhu Yongbiao, director of the Afghanistan Studies Centre at Lanzhou University in China, said the chances of reopening the Wakhan crossing were “very slim.” According to him, Afghanistan’s economic value to China is limited, while opening the route would bring heavy security and financial costs.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported that Beijing’s main concern is border security and the status of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), a group China considers a threat to security in Xinjiang. According to a report attributed to the United Nations in 2026, the group is active in Badakhshan.

Zhu Yongbiao said the Taliban administration has complied with almost none of China’s demands on how to deal with ETIM, and for that reason it is unlikely Beijing will make further concessions in the near future. In analyses published in Chinese media, the key question has also been framed as the Taliban administration’s ability to control territory, prevent the operation of training camps and contain the risk of cross-border infiltration.

The road was built by Afghan engineers at a cost of $5.6 million. The Taliban administration has presented it as evidence of its ability to develop infrastructure, but Ehsanullah Omrkhil, an Afghanistan researcher in Malaysia, said the route in its current state is largely symbolic and not ready for real trade.

Meanwhile, Yar Mohammad, a local guide, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that for residents of the area the Wakhan road is not only a transport route, but also a hope of reducing isolation and improving their lives. However, until China is satisfied with the security situation at the border, the road will remain unused for commercial purposes and, in practice, a dead-end route.

China is still friends with Pakistan but not fond of this specific adminstration. Also Pakistan falling out with the Afghan Taliban has made them appear confusing to the Chinese which is true this admin is completely messed up instead of befriending the Afghans and expanding trade routes Pakistan started beefing with Kabul over irrelevant TTP militias and they tried to force that on Kabul... China suspects US hands or Pakistan becoming a US lackey or servant. China actully improved ties with Kabul. China wants Kabul-Islambad as bulwark against India.

Pakistani businesses have lost billions of dollars which goes to show Pakistani military do not care about the private sector whatsoever otherwise they wouldn´t have closed all the border corridors to Afghanistan which leads to central asia if they did. Now Afghanistan has connected their economy to other countries such as Iran, Uzbekistan, China etc etc they will benefit from it.. Pakistan starved itself from billions of dollars, due to some fuking irrelevant populist gov´t reactions that will only be remember as the trend of the month but nothing more

I think some members with political bias should not be allowed to discuss in military related topic. I mean just look at the comedy show they have created here.

when an officer retires he is as just knowledgeable about future development as any other defense analyst because he no longer has access to classified details of any deals. At the moment, India has not even decided on its 5th gen platform so PAF will wait and then customize their order accordingly.

China does not care who is in the office in Pakistan as long as it does not compromise Pak China strategic interest. Not once has China shown any resentment with Khan's dismissal.

Do not make random guesses or pass such judgments. This is not a friendly act.

Elections or changes of government in Pakistan are considered internal affairs of Pakistan.

China has no interest in interfering in the internal affairs of other countries. We simply observe the situation and, based on the political leanings and policy decisions of a given country’s administration, make corresponding policy adjustments and devise appropriate response strategies. That is all.

The potential deal between China and Pakistan regarding the FC-31/J-35 fighter jet cannot be reduced to a simple question of whether or not a sale will take place; it involves a multitude of highly complex factors.

A fifth-generation fighter is not merely an individual aircraft, but rather a node within a sophisticated, integrated aerial combat system. Until the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) completes the necessary upgrades to its existing aerial combat support infrastructure, the acquisition of such fighters would hold little practical value. Only once this infrastructure is capable of meeting the fundamental requirements of fifth-generation aircraft will the formal procurement process likely begin.

Of course, how to solve the huge amount of funding required for this trade is also a problem.
