Chinese 6th Generation Aircraft News & Discussions

Indeed … do you know what’s the current consensus on the number of prototyes for each?

I didn't hear much about information about the J-36 recently.

But someone from the early 2026 has drawn the cartoon J-36 that hinted it got at least 4 prototypes or perhaps more.

Some source also suggests it could start in small batch by 2027 with the current WS-15, then start to carry the test of the 6th gen VCE around 2030.

The latest appearance of the Chinese J-36 stealth fighter prototype has provided evidence of design refinements focused on the air intakes and aerodynamic profile which could enhance the aircraft's ability to operate effectively in high-threat environments throughout the Indo-Pacific theatre.

SAC is reportedly developing a twin-engine manned or unmanned fighter with a top speed of Mach 3.5.

I thought according to 一定会对蛙动手, it is more some sort of manned supersonic strategic reconnaissance aircraft project. He says that a paper about it exists and is certain that the project itself also exists.

China Refines J-36 Stealth Fighter Design to Reshape Indo-Pacific Air Superiority

byAero News Journal-July 14, 2026

Discover how China's J-36 stealth fighter upgrades elevate sixth-generation airpower across the Indo-Pacific with advanced stealth and design refinements.

Beijing, July 14 - China’s J-36 stealth fighter has emerged with significant design upgrades in its second prototype, intensifying global focus on next-generation air superiority in the Indo-Pacific. This advanced tailless flying-wing aircraft, developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, showcases refined engine intakes now featuring diverterless supersonic inlets (DSI) for improved high-speed performance and reduced radar signature. The revisions enhance airflow efficiency while minimizing foreign object debris risks, positioning the J-36 as a formidable contender in contested skies. These enhancements underscore China’s push toward sixth-generation fighter capabilities, blending exceptional stealth with superior range and endurance for regional dominance.

The J-36’s trijet configuration remains a standout feature, with updated exhaust nozzles incorporating two-dimensional thrust vectoring for better maneuverability without compromising low-observable traits. Changes to the main landing gear, shifting to a side-by-side arrangement, improve ground stability and operational practicality for this heavy platform. Such optimizations highlight ongoing maturation of China’s stealth fighter technology, potentially enabling extended missions across vast Indo-Pacific theaters. Analysts note the aircraft’s cranked delta wings and all-aspect stealth shaping as key to evading advanced detection systems.

These major design upgrades in the China J-36 stealth fighter elevate sixth-generation airpower stakes, challenging established balances in the region. With potential for supercruise and integration of long-range weapons, the platform could reshape aerial strategies involving peer adversaries. Its development signals rapid progress in Chinese aviation, prompting heightened vigilance among Indo-Pacific partners seeking to maintain technological edges in stealth and multirole operations.

As flight testing advances, the J-36 represents a pivotal evolution in modern combat aviation. Its focus on broadband stealth, internal payload capacity, and adaptive propulsion sets new benchmarks for future air dominance. Continued refinements will likely influence procurement decisions and alliance dynamics across the Indo-Pacific, where superior airpower remains central to strategic stability.
