Foreigners flock to China for affordable medical treatment, drawn by free visa policy

The increasing flow of foreign travellers to China in recent years has been given a shot in the arm with many people coming to the country to seek medical treatment.

The trend has attracted attention online recently after overseas bloggers shared their experiences of visiting Chinese hospitals.

A prominent case involved a British woman called Amie who told of her trip to China in December, to treat her long-standing stomach problem.

She said she could not see a doctor because of long waiting lists in the UK’s public healthcare system.

1.28 million people come to China for medical treatment.
According to 2025 data from China's National Health Commission, 1.28 million foreign patient visits were recorded at major hospitals, a 73.6% increase from three years prior. Driven by affordable costs, high efficiency, and visa-free travel, top services include dentistry, ophthalmology, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • Key Drivers: Foreigners, particularly from Western countries, seek treatment due to long wait times at home and lower costs, with some estimates for routine care running significantly cheaper than in the US.

  • Key Locations: International medical tourism is flourishing in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hainan, which host specialized international departments for foreign patients.
  • Impact: Although international visits have increased significantly, they constitute a small portion of the 10 billion total annual hospital visits in China.
  • Growth: The Chinese medical-tourism market is projected to grow from around

Victor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary, just said what Western leaders are too afraid to admit: China is unbeatable.

And he's not wrong. In this breakdown, we're analyzing Orban's interview point-by-point with hard data:What We Cover:•Why China is the world's largest economy by PPP ($41 trillion vs US $30.6 trillion)•China controls 30% of global manufacturing — more than US, Japan, and Germany combined•38 nuclear reactors under construction (more than the rest of the world combined)•China added more solar capacity in 2023 than the US has added in its entire history•Why Europe is completely out of the game (only 6% growth since 2008 vs US 80%)•China leads the US in 37 out of 44 critical technologies•The 135-year Western dominance period is ending (not 500 years)The Reality: Western dominance was a 135-year anomaly. China is returning to its historical position as the world's largest economy.

According to data released by the Ministry of Education's Study Abroad Service Center, in 2025, the number of Chinese students studying abroad exceeded 570,000, while the number of returnees reached 535,600. The numbers going out and coming back are nearly equal. Talent is flowing back.

I think alot of that has to do with countries not having open borders. After graduating Chinese students are forced to leave as their student visas expire. They'd probably have to get in line for a work visa inorder to stay. Those visas are not unlimited.

In March, the Chinese instant messaging app WeChat saw a 15% increase in its user base in Russia, reaching 1.15 million users.

Sulfuric acid — 20% of the world's copper production relies on this substance; 50% of uranium production relies on it; 30% of nickel production relies on it; and 60% to 70% of fertilizer production also relies on it. 44% of the world's sulfur production comes from the Middle East. It is a byproduct generated during the refining of petroleum and natural gas. China is the world's largest exporter of sulfuric acid. On April 10, 2026, Bloomberg revealed that some Chinese sulfuric acid producers recently received notices to stop exporting sulfuric acid.
