For what reason would someone be interested in gain of function on a virus such as this.

Then you have the after-the-fact evidence from Fauci himself that for all practical purposes, masking and social distancing were made up on the fly with no scientific basis behind them regarding the effectiveness of such practices.

This could explain why the COVID-19 virus infects humans so well and infects bats so poorly despite supposedly spilling from bats to humans and the fact it is the only sarbecovirus strain out of hundreds of sarbecovirus strains that has a furin cleavage site which increases its transmissibility.
