If Yousuf Youhana’s conversion to Islam can be viewed as his personal religious choice, why is Tulsi Gabbard’s Hindu identity or her association with Hindu organizations treated differently? She should be free to follow Hinduism and maintain relationships with people or organizations she supports. If her political views or specific associations are problematic, criticize those on their merits—but being Hindu itself shouldn’t be treated as evidence of wrongdoing. Gabbard has herself argued that scrutiny of her Hindu-American supporters based on their names amounted to religious bigotry.
