A FIFTH Pakistan Air Force F-16 squadron was formed earlier this year at PAF Base Mushaf in Sargodha. As evidenced by the tail markings on F-16A serial 84718, 29 Squadron is an aggressor squadron operated by the co-located Airpower Centre of Excellence (ACE). However, the unit also has a combat role and is believed to have played a major part in Operation Swift Retort, when the PAF responded to an Indian Air Force attack on February 27

Deliveries of Sniper targeting pods and 18 F-16C/D Block 52s in 2010 meant the PAF could bomb insurgents at night. This aircraft is also equipped with two 2,000Ib GBU-10 laser-guided bombs and wingtip AMRAAMs.

The ATLIS pod equipped F-16s prior to the arrival of the Sniper. It could provide only a daytime targeting capability, which meant the insurgents could move unhindered at night.

The DB-110 reconnaissance pods delivered to the PAF in January 2009 equipped it to defeat the terrorists. They enabled them to map the whole of the FATA in readiness for Operation Burq in mid-2009

PAF personnel integrated the Star SAFIRE III and BRITE Star EO/IR systems onto its fleet of five C-130Bs. The result is a reliable ISR aircraft that can loiter for hours over targets in all conditions.
