There is YF- prototype/tech demonstrator and F- production variant.

YF-22 started flying in 1990. F-22 took its first flight in 1997.

X-35 tech demonstrator flew in 2000. While F-35 first prototype flew in 2006.

NGAD prototype flew in 2020. And production representative F-47 will fly 2028. Nothing radical here.

What will fly in 2028 will be final production representative, similar to the B-21. The technological advancement has been completed, now it’s just about integrating that into the production model and testing that for operations.

Some of the thread participants are clearly worked up because nothing is known about the US stealth aircraft programs other that what has been authorized for public disclosure yet somehow the Chinese prototypes are superior even though they admit the designs are still evolving.

Under research and development contracts with DARPA, Boeing and Lockheed Martin designed two X-planes as risk reduction for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) Platform. These aircraft first flew in 2019 and 2022, logging several hundred hours each.

David Allvin: “For the past five years, the X-planes for this aircraft have been quietly laying the foundation for the F-47 — flying hundreds of hours, testing cutting-edge concepts, and proving that we can push the envelope of technology with confidence.”

These were clearly full scale prototypes with both aircraft flying hundreds of hours each. In comparison the YF-22 prototype flew 91 hours and YF-23 65 hours.

What flys in 2028 will be F-47 production representative. The US is past the prototyping stage.

You may be seeing only PPT for now. But, do not be surprised when the USAF reveals one to the public. It could very easily be another of those "oh ****" moments like when the F-117 was finally revealed to the public.

Yes. We'll see it. Maybe in 5 or 10 years. After all, there is no time constraint. It's like a country that aimed to build the world's most advanced fighter jet in the 1980s, and finally, in the 2020s, this world-leading fighter jet is about to be put into service.
