F-86 Sabres of Pakistan Air Force

Unequalled achievement

By June 1958, the squadron had relocated to Wattisham, Suffolk, following a brief spell at Rutland’s North Luffenham, while the former base’s runways were resurfaced. Topp turned his attention to the forthcoming Farnborough display in September.

“On the bar of the officer’s mess was the latest copy of Air Clues, the RAF’s magazine,” said Bob Barcilon, “and the centrepiece was a picture of 16 Pakistan Air Force F-86s doing a loop.”

Can some expert answer me a simple question?
Why did the Sabre have an armament of 0.5 machine guns rather than 20 mm canon?

Even by the end of WW2, canon were standard in almost all fighter planes.
