Argentina were given a huge scare before ending Cape Verde’s fairytale run as Lionel Messi netted his 20th World Cup goal in a 3-2 win after extra-time to reach the last 16.
Messi’s sublime control and finish for his seventh goal at this tournament in four games put the defending champions in command, but the Blue Sharks doggedly refused to go away.
Deroy Duarte’s strike on the hour mark forced Argentina to expand more energy than they would have wanted in the sapping Miami heat.
Lisandro Martinez briefly restored Argentina’s lead early in extra time before Sidny Lopes Cabral’s stunning shot rocketed into the top corner.
Another Argentina corner finally got the job done when Cristian Romero rose highest to head Messi’s corner, the ball going in after taking a deflection off Diney Borges for an own goal.
La Albiceleste will face Egypt next on Tuesday in Atlanta, but there were concerns for Lionel Scaloni on his 100th match in charge despite what appears a favourable draw.
Cape Verde served warning of what they were capable of by holding European champions Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to draws in Group ‘H’ to reach the knockout stages in their first World Cup appearance.

Forget Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane - it is the tournament debutants who have become the centre of attention.
There were the heroics of goalkeeper Vozinha as they earned their first World Cup point against Spain.
There were the thrills as they scored their first World Cup goals against Uruguay.
And there was Sidny Lopes Cabral's wonder goal as they almost caused the competition's biggest shock against Argentina.
Cape Verde's World Cup journey had it all.

Glad that Hani did the right thing , the guy is Egyptian and he speaks Arabic , why would he speak in English ( Hani left the press conference after probably some western press asked him to speak in English).

I predicted a France vs Argentina final
But France has multiple superstars
Whilst Argentina is set up to get the ball to Messi
France and Spain have looked the most complete teams
If anyone is going to beat France, it's going to be Spain
I would love for Morocco to get through, but they have to beat both France and then Spain to reach the final and that's a BIG ask

I still know for sure that our team is weak and we don't play well at all , but I like some acts during this tournement like Hani or the Egyptian coach when he raised the Palestinian flag after Australia's game etc.Looks like you are coming around on the Egypt team

I don't get the Infantino hate. Positions at the top of organizations are inherently political and Infantino has been quite skillful in adapting to the environment.
