The world’s largest battery-powered aircraft completed its first flight, marking a major milestone for electric aviation and battery technology.

Heart Aerospace’s X1 demonstrator flew for 27 minutes from a regional airport in upstate New York, powered entirely by batteries. The aircraft reached an altitude of 1,100 feet with one pilot aboard and no passengers, marking the first time the company had flown the X1.

Heart said the X1 is the largest fully battery-powered aircraft ever flown. The 30-seat plane measures 76 feet long, has a 106-foot wingspan and weighs more than 25,000 pounds.

“With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” Heart founder and CEO Anders Forslund said in a statement.

The successful test demonstrated progress in battery-electric propulsion while also highlighting the technology’s current range limitations, Heart Aerospace said.

The X1 is a test platform and is not intended for commercial airline service. Heart plans to use what it learns from the aircraft to develop the ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid-electric aircraft that the company hopes to put into service by 2031. United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX have all expressed interest in the model, according to the company.

Heart estimates the ES-30 will be able to travel about 125 miles using battery power alone. That range is too limited for many regional routes, particularly when airlines account for required reserve power.

To address that limitation, the ES-30 will use a combustion-engine range extender that Heart says could increase its maximum range to roughly 500 miles.

The company also said the hybrid design could significantly reduce operating costs. Heart estimates the ES-30 could be more than 40% cheaper to operate than comparable conventional regional aircraft due to lower energy consumption and maintenance costs. Electric motors have fewer moving parts than traditional aircraft engines, potentially reducing the frequency and cost of repairs.

Heart said the X1 used about $5 worth of electricity during its first flight. That figure reflects only the electricity consumed during the test and does not include labor, airport fees, insurance, maintenance, battery degradation or other costs associated with operating a commercial aircraft.
