The Indian Air Force (IAF) has strengthened its position as one of the world’s leading air forces. According to the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) Global Air Powers Ranking 2026, the IAF is now the 6th most powerful military aviation force in the world.
One of the biggest highlights of the latest ranking is that India has been placed ahead of China in overall air power. Pakistan, meanwhile, is ranked much lower on the list.
Who Is Ranked No. 1?
The United States continues to dominate global military aviation. Four of the world’s top five aviation forces belong to the US.
- US Air Force – Ranked 1st with a TVR score of 242.9 and 5,004 aircraft
- US Navy – Ranked 2nd with a TVR score of 142.4
- Russian Air Force – Ranked 3rd with a TVR score of 114.2
- US Army Aviation – Ranked 4th with a TVR score of 112.6
- US Marine Corps Aviation – Ranked 5th with a TVR score of 85.3
If only the main air forces of each country are compared, India becomes the third most powerful air force after the United States and Russia.
India vs China: Why Is India Ranked Higher?
India is ranked 6th with a TVR score of 69.4, while China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is ranked 7th with a TVR score of 63.8.
Although China has 3,733 aircraft, more than double India’s 1,716 aircraft, India still ranks higher because the WDMMA ranking focuses on overall capability, not just numbers.
Why Is India Ahead?
The WDMMA ranking uses a True Value Rating (TVR) system that measures:
- Fleet modernisation
- Combat and strategic capability
- Logistics and pilot training
- Balance between fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters, and special mission aircraft
India scores well because of its balanced fleet, which includes advanced fighter jets such as the Rafale, Su-30MKI, and Tejas.
Where Does Pakistan Stand?
Despite often highlighting its air power, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is ranked 18th in the world.
It has 879 aircraft and a TVR score of 46.3, placing it well behind both India and China.
Indian Navy and Army Also Feature in the Rankings
The WDMMA also ranks the aviation wings of navies and armies around the world.
- Indian Navy Aviation is ranked 27th with 232 aircraft and a TVR score of 41.2.
- Indian Army Aviation is ranked 36th with 540 aircraft and a TVR score of 30.0.
China’s Navy Aviation is ranked 15th, while Pakistan’s Navy and Army aviation wings do not feature in the global list of 107 military aviation units.
Quality Matters More Than Numbers
The 2026 WDMMA report shows that modern air power is not decided by the number of aircraft alone. The quality of aircraft, combat capability, training, and operational readiness play a much bigger role.
With a balanced and modern fleet, the Indian Air Force has emerged as one of Asia’s strongest air forces and continues to improve its global standing.
