Global Naval Power Rankings 2026 - US Navy Retains Top Ranking

US has 11 carriers but only 2-3 of them are combat ready. The rest are sitting at the dock waiting for maintenance and some of those aging carriers are approaching their retirement age, but new carriers are not ready yet. On paper US has 11 carriers but in practice it’s a different story.
Currently four carriers are in operation

Which is normal. One of those may be doing training. Haven't been looking to see which carrier is where at the moment.
I think given the complexity of servicing the nuclear reactors you won't see more than 5-6 aircraft carriers in operation

good point - it is a good idea to be training your carrier crews given the complexity of operation

There would have to be some deep serious trouble in the world if all were at sea.

And then, the world can likely expect to see some deep serious hurt.

even if it was possible, it would have to an end of world scenario where every aircraft carrier needs to be deployed

i can see 7 or 8. above that it is pushing your luck

There are typically one or two on training exercises at any given time.

That's @SolarWarden 's area of expertise.
Currently The USS Carl Vinson is at sea off the coast of San Diego for readiness and crew training for about a week even though they came back August 2025 after the longest deployment ever for the USS Vinson.

In a crisis the USN can surge 9 carriers, 6 less thn a month and remaining 2-3 80-90 days. So 9 carriers total in a crisis takes 80-90 days to put to sea.
