Clean drinking water supply begins in Gwadar

GWADAR, In a major development, clean drinking water supply finally commenced in each and every household of the city of Gwadar through newly laid water pipeline network from the area of Kalanchi Para on March 6.

Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) DG Saif Ullah Khatran termed the development a great step to ensure safe drinking water. It will also resolve the water scarcity issue in Gwadar, he said.

A GDA official told Gwadar Pro that dwellers of Gwadar were compelled to drink polluted water due to mixing of sewerage water into ruptured drinking water supply lines connected to homes. GDA replaced old rusty and fractured water supply line network with 141 km long state-of-the-art highly-insulated water supply lines at the cost of Rs3.5 billion.

He added that Gwadar localities of Faqir Colony and Dhoor, etc. that have already been connected with water supply lines are all set to receive potable water during current week.

Promising progress was made after GDA laid down a 158 km long pipeline from the Shadi Kor and Swad dams to the city. Meanwhile, GDA has built four underground storage tanks in different parts of Gwadar City with a collective storage capacity of 10 million gallons of water.

“Water reservoirs including Ankara Dam, Swad Dam, and Shadi Kaur Dam, in proximity of Gwadar, have been interconnected with one another in order to keep supply of potable water to Gwadar City,” GDA official said.

Shedding light on details, he said that around 67 km long water transmission pipeline from Swad Dam with a capacity to supply 5 Million Gallon Per Day (MGD) has been laid down at the cost of Rs3.8 billion, and Shadi Kaur Dam with a capacity of 2.5 MGD safe drinking water to Chaud Daggar costing Rs. 3.5 billion has been completed.

He revealed that Ankara Dam, built many years back with a capacity of 2.70 MGD has been interconnected with the two dams, which will ensure uninterrupted supply to Gwadar locals especially those residing in the old city.

The importance of Gwadar is increasing with every passing day as Chabahar is becoming a non-starter. According to a former NATO officer and strategic analyst Col Gucluer (Turkish Army, retired), the USA appears to be well set to intervene in Iran to cut her oils supplies to China. A direct confrontation with China has reached the point of diminishing return; hence, no AUKUS, QUAD etc. type hocus pocus. Only path available is to tactically isolate China from her major energy supply chains. Bonhomie with Russia by offering Europe on a platter is to disengage Russia from China. It seems to be tough; so, Iran appears to be a low hanging fruit....

10 MW provided to Gwadar Port, South Free Zone

By Yasir Habib Khan | Gwadar Pro
Jul 12, 2025

GWADAR, Jul 13 (Gwadar Pro) - In a mega development, 10 MW has finally been made available on July 12 for Gwadar Port and Gwadar South Free Zone, spreading over 60 acres of land from the national grid station.

Significant advancement came into being after Quetta Electric Supply Company (QUESCO) initiated the project on May 8th by putting in place infrastructure, power cables and poles on the site. QUESCO official told Gwadar Port that two independent feeders with each 5 megawatts have started providing electricity to Gwadar Port and Gwadar South Free Zone smoothly and seamlessly.

The project serves as a catalyst for robust economic activities and the acceleration of industrialization in Gwadar Port, and Gwadar Free Zones. QUESCO has already provided 10MW electricity in Gwadar North Free Zone last year, a shot in the arm for investors and companies desperately seeking power supply. Electricity tariff varies between Rs. 35 to Rs. 45 for industrial purpose as per normal and peak hours with uninterrupted supply. Earlier, Gwadar Port was using expensive electricity being produced by 8.5 MW diesel-powered generator, which had taken a heavy toll on the financial bill.

China-funded 1.2 MGD water plant to feed drinking water to Gwadar residents

ISLAMABAD, Jul 14 (Gwadar Pro)- Since Gwadar residents are desperately struggling for drinking water after water reservoirs went dry, China-funded 1.2 MGD desalination water plant is all set to provide 7 million to 8 million gallon potable water to local residents of Gwadar.

In the wake of scanty rains, water reservoirs including Ankara Dam, Swad Dam, and Shadi Kaur Dam are currently without water. Balochistan government sealed the approval of the decision to purchase water from the 1.2 MGD desalination water plant last week on July 08.

Government official told Gwadar Pro that a high-profile meeting played a pivotal role to make things happen when Gwadar Port Authority Chairman Noor ul Haq Baloch, Public Health Engineering Department secretary Imran Ghachki and Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) DG Saif Ullah Khaitran and Public Health Engineering Xen Engineer Momon Baloch put their heads together to figure out how to mitigate on-going water crisis in Gwadar.

He said that 1.2 MGD seawater desalination water plant has been done and dusted with a grant of Rs 2 billion from China in collaboration with Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), National Engineering Services Pakistan and China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC). Alongside 1.2 MGD desalination plant, an around 1 kilo meter long water supply line from plant site to Gwadar city’s main water supply network has also been laid down, he added

Initially 0.5 MGD Water Desalination Plant project was inked with the conduction of feasibility and survey by government of Pakistan and China. Later having revisited the current demand of water, the government approved the 1.2 MGD Water Desalination Plant for Gwadar On July 5, 2021.

Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) also completed 158km pipeline from the Shadi Kor and Swad dams. GDA has also installed a new 141 km water distribution pipeline to ensure every household in the city has access to drinking water.

In recent past, GDA official told Gwadar Pro that now each resident of Gwadar city will be beneficiary of potable water supply, he said and added that Gwadar localities like Faqir Colony and Dhoor that have already been connected with water supply lines are all set to receive potable water during current week.

Five private companies on Friday proposed routes for the newly announced ferry service from Gwadar to the Gulf region, according to the maritime ministry.

On July 1, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs announced an ambitious plan to expand Gwadar Port’s operational capacity by introducing additional shipping lines and launching a ferry service connecting Pakistan with Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The move is expected to provide an affordable, direct maritime link for passengers and cargo, particularly benefiting expatriate communities and cross-border traders.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry chaired a meeting on the ferry service today to review the “technical and financial aspects of ferry operations”, a statement by his ministry said.

“Five private companies presented their proposals,” the statement added.

“The interest of the private sector in ferry service has increased,” Chaudhry said, adding that various routes were under consideration. “The ferry service will promote regional connectivity and trade.”

“The movement of passengers and goods from Gulf countries will become easier,” he noted, adding that the service will highlight Gwadar on the international maritime map.
