I for one don't understand how a company can justify an H-1B if there is an equally qualified US citizen available.

And I was in a role where I dealt with H-1Bs a lot.

It was originally meant as a visa to address genuine industry shortages. It turned into a wage suppression / Indian immigration tool.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. What will be critical for India, Indian citizens and Indian firms is what happens next? Do these jobs stay in the West? Or are they Bangalored? If the latter, it is no great loss. The former, obviously it is.

Nothing much making H-1B hiring harder doesn’t magically create American jobs. It pushes companies toward more offshoring, makes it harder to retain skilled talent, and increases the cost and difficulty of getting projects done in the U.S. This couldn't come at a better time for emerging markets especially when they are trying to retain talents while rapidly expanding.

H1 B flops (it may still come back if Dems win 2028 but we don't know). But does it get replaced by more jobs outsourced to India? More net forex earnings for India? We may lose the H1B battle but win the revenue war. Or we may lose both the battle and the war.

The point is that you can't use a Visa programme that is to address skill gaps for wage suppression. That door it seems for the most part has now been closed down as it should have been.

Directly, yes, you are right. Indirectly companies can get around it by transferring more jobs abroad.

If you do win the "job war", then fine , good for you..

For a poor, job starved economy like India that is the only thing that should matter.
