H-1B visas must end’: Wife of US citizen shares plight of landing IT jobs

The bill, introduced on Friday and known as the "Halting International Relocation of Employment Act" or "HIRE Act," creates a 25% tax on "outsourcing payments" which are defined as any money paid by a U.S. company or taxpayer to a foreign person whose work benefits U.S. consumers.

So, what are they going to do? Shut down American companies operating outside the US? The taxes on Google Microsoft Apple is going to be astronomical. Or every American company Fortune 500. Sounds like a load of bull

It is understandable that Americans want to keep jobs at home and it is certainly doable. But

There will be costs to be paid by American companies.
There will be some disruption as you can't replace millions of outsourced/HiBed programmers overnight.

As long as the American companies/economy are willing to pay the price, it is certainly doable.

This will stop brain drain. India will retain talent. India will develop new technologies in India for India!!! On a serious note, this isn’t good news. A lot of my H1B friends are providing for their families back in India.

Let me try to address this. Let me begin with the 2nd question first. It is unfortunate but it is what it is. Indians don't have any automatic right on the American job market. If the Americans want to restrict access to overseas workers to their labour market, it has to be accepted. These H1B workers will have to retrain themselves for new roles either back or in some other market.

Now, coming to the first question. The return of Indian IT professionals to India is a necessary but not sufficient condition for development of an indigenous tech environment. What it would require is Indian government and companies themselves developing a risk-taking ability (including use of risk capital) for indigenous tech. The past track record is not encouraging. To the best of my knowledge apart from ZOHO there are no other big IT corporates who are in the products business. But if this does go through, the resultant shock might force Indian IT industry to adapt. Remember it was an economic shock in 1991, which got India to change.

The season front be whole H1B saga is that growth can’t really be build on services, and they can be pulled back, unlike competitive industrial development. Furthermore, when the economy or at least the job market goes into a downturn, what was once welcomed, is now seen as a burden.

Look at the Charlie Kirk comments at the start of this video. Now, after his death, those sentiments will only get engraved into the mindset of his supporters, regardless of whatever dog whistle Kash signals with talk of Valhalla.

There is a reason many ethnic minorities, from earlier waves oof immigration clustered in geographical parts of the US. To be protected from discrimination and secure employment within community based social networks.

Your best bet is finding a job that requires high enough security clearance that non-citizens are ineligible. The private sector is generally quite ageist, especially in tech.

Why would you want a job at near 60? If you have been in IT, you would have funded retirement several times over by now. A more sensible move would be to spend half a year back in Pakistan in one of the more pleasant places.

My younger bro (who is a tad over 50) does just that.
