I didn’t think the video quality was good enough to make that judgement and could still see heavily riveted panels. Maybe better quality pics / videos would help.

Might as well. Only stupidity of Indian government is to foster system that has failed decades after decades. HAL is run by babus and military (both throughly corrupt and very demanding). It has little fund and terrible engineers. Only thing keeping HAL alive is Indian government because it serves both sides. Military can keep buying fancy foreign useless crap and earn kickback (and share with babus) while government can pretend Nehru built PSUs are worth their name since they provide job and prestige.
HAL needs to be scrapped and government needs to fund private companies and "stratups" for real working planes..and someday engines. Hell, DRDO is 100 times better than HAL.

It took 42 years for the project to reach this far where, now we find, the Indian air force is struggling to keep it properly maintained. How embarrassing to turn up at a prestigious international event and then to have a bad leak from your plane, an aircraft you're trying to promote to an international audience, and to show off the industrial and technological capability of India... Holy moly.
