HAL LCA Tejas: Updates, News & Discussions

The first true blue MK IA was supposed to fly in mid March. It is past that date.

HAL has indeed proven true to its reputation of never delivering anything on time ever. I hope that IAF is once again not forced to accept an unfinished product under political pressure.

Air Chief Marshal (retd.) RKS Bhadauria on the Tejas Mk1A and Tejas Mk2.

He talks about how good the Tejas Mk1 is (as good as the Mirage-2000I in the IAF) and the Tejas Mk1A would exceed the capabilities of the upgraded Mirage-2000Is of the IAF. Also how the Tejas Mk1 squadrons are more than capable of taking on the role of moving to the forward Air bases.

Please!

It was ready for it's first flight on the 18th of March. But PM Modi's schedule is what is driving it's first flight now. It is anything but an "unfinished" product.

I would be more than happy, if that’s the case.
Past credentials of HAL create such doubts. Hopefully, HAL would turn around it’s image and I would be more than happy in that case too.

Means 1st flight has already happened. successfully They test fly and get everything checked out well before the 'celebrity events'. I saw both LCH 'tiger bird' and LUH flying around the HAL area for several weeks before the 1st 'official flight' in front of ministers and s on.

What "unfinished" HAL product has the IA, IAF or IN accepted? They are in fact the most difficult customers to please and seem least interested in following more pragmatic product development practices that even the PAF is willing to follow.

Had they been ready to accept an "unfinished" product, the LCA Tejas Mk1 would've entered service at IOC-1 level itself. But no, not till it achieves full IOC and that too just 20 units at that level and then 20 more at full FOC level.

Anyway, the IAF's PMT is fully embedded in the project and knows EXACTLY what level of development the Tejas Mk1A is at..which is why the IAF went in for an additional 97 Tejas Mk1As.

Yes, you have a solid point here. It is a vicious cycle in which everyone has payed a role. PAF drives the development and controls all the aspects of JF-17, which is not so in IAF’s case. HAL can prove to be a difficult seller. It knows that IAF doesn’t have any direct control over it and can play bad.

All in all, it is a difficult scene in India. Everyone is to blame in this.

If everything was going so good, then for once HAL should have delivered the product a month before than a month after. With the current setup in Delhi, IAF doesn’t have much power to dither on accepting the aircraft.

It was a pragmatic approach and the way to go forward. It can definitely do wonders in the long run.My concern is not the long run but what is happening at this moment.

Over long run, I am sure that it would come out great. All the nay sayers in IAF, HAL, DRDO would be straightened out and brought in line towards the bigger goal. A goal where nation is first.

I am sure that’s the way it happens. All the systems are under integration and testing in test bed Tejas aircraft. How successfully they have done the task is what is under cloud here. If everything was going so great guns, then they should have lined up few production ready aircraft a little ahead of schedule and not later.

I sound pessimistic and that may not be liked by many. I hope that soon, it gets good.

Hang on, am I reading this right? Tejas MK 1 is similar to early 1980s French Mirage 2000 and the MK1A similar to early 90s upgraded Mirage 2000? Tech wise is this not a step backward?
