IIT Delhi opens first int'l campus with batch of 52 students in Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, officially inaugurated the Abu Dhabi campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on Monday. The first batch of undergraduate students, who will pursue BTech degrees in Energy Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, were greeted by the Crown Prince.

This first batch of 52 students was chosen through the JEE Advanced examination and the newly introduced Combined Admission Entrance Test (CAET) for international candidates. The undergrad batch is diverse, involving Indian, Emirati, and global students. This is the first international campus of IIT Delhi.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, launched strategic partnerships during the event between IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi, its parent campus IIT-Delhi, and prominent Abu Dhabi higher education institutions like Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Khalifa University, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Zayed University. These coordinated efforts will encourage joint research, scholarly projects, and student and staff exchanges.

The collaboration with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will make it possible to jointly engage in research projects, exchange postgraduate students, and hold scientific seminars. According to WAM, UAE’s official news agency, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence will host internships, conduct joint research, and provide seed project grants.

Sheikh Khaled hailed the opening of the milestone seat of advancement as a critical step in Abu Dhabi's attempts to solidify itself as a worldwide centre for research and development, the National reported. Sheikh Khaled, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, was on hand as multiple deals were made between the Abu Dhabi IIT and some of the emirate's leading universities.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan focused on the significance of the IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus in strengthening the India-UAE bond. India-UAE relationship into new collaborative areas

The Vision Document, which was launched in February 2022, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan outlines a roadmap for expanding the relationship between India and the UAE into new collaborative areas.

It includes the establishment of the IIT campus in the UAE as one of its primary outcomes. In January 2024, the first Master of Technology (MTech) program in Energy Transition and Sustainability was launched at IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi. During Prime Minister Modi's visit to Abu Dhabi in February this year, the inaugural MTech cohort had the opportunity to meet him.

IIT-Delhi: Place for creating successful engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators

IIT Delhi is one of 23 prestigious institutes in India known for producing eminent engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators. According to a report, the IIT is frequently referred to as India's MIT and Harvard. Sheikh Khaled visited the campus and recounted its diverse academic program, including courses for energy, engineering and computer science.

According to the release, in July 2023, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed an agreement between the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge, IIT Delhi, and India's Ministry of Education to formalize the foundation of IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi. The UAE government had specifically requested India to open an IIT in their country.

Right now, UAE does not attract the top tier of Indian talent. Just based on the fact that this is an IIT-Delhi extension with an excellent campus, I would expect it to soon become the campus of choice for the top tier of students who qualify for IIT and also want to live abroad. IIT-Delhi is already in the top 4 IIT's in India.

@Quwa @PakFactor - Interesting development potentially from Pakistan's perspective. Do you feel this will have an impact on Pakistan's influence in/with the UAE?

Even without IIT, Pakistani's influence is waning by us shooting our foot. So this school wouldn’t do much.

I was thinking more along the lines of the complaints some Pakistanis have that Indians who are hiring in UAE do not give jobs to Pakistanis.

I expect that in a few years, assuming top tier Indian talent moving to UAE, they would start new companies and also enter major corporates there. Assuming the Pakistani allegations to be true, this would further embed Indians in UAE in significant positions and can potentially harm Pakistani influence in the country.

On the other hand, I am sure UAE has equal opportunity/equity laws that would enable Pakistanis and other nationalities to compete and study in the IIT as well, potentially enhancing their influence. That would be pretty cool too, to potentially see Pakistanis studying at IIT!

We dont actually need physical campus any more at this time, particularly for subjects like economy, computer science, etc

For some skills, i agree. For other skills like networking, social skills, community you need in-person experiences. I don't foresee in person education going away anytime soon.

Campus should have its digital version to increase their reach. For subjects that can be taught digitally of course.

Like in case a campus in Jakarta, they can open the class for students living in other island. Cost effective

We know Indians like you who are given a voice on a Pakistani forum ,can not think past Pakistan as in essence that's your bench mark. Hope for you that it's a better step than opening the library in Kabul .

Can Pakistanis attend IIT in UAE?

I ask because we're at a point where there's no hope in Pakistan's ability to develop or wield influence as a state.

Unless we see a big change in Pakistan's entire leadership/ruling apparatus, there's no point in expecting any real change (in the status-quo).

So, until then, Pakistanis should find and take whatever chances they have for individual growth and development. If we see a day when Pakistan is run sincerely and competently, it'll need lots and lots of talent and capital. So, let's at least build that as individuals.

It's also to train top tier students from UAE. They want really strong locals in engineering.

Nope. IIT's are not just about knowledge. It's about really, really tough training.

Indian institutions don't just take pride in 'cutting edge'- thye break students with 24x7 work schedules and very difficult testing of concepts. Their idea of engineers is people who understand fundamental concepts exceptionally well and cut a piece of metal physically with hacksaws to very very high levels of accuracy.

It is an academic smlter where the students are melted into lava and pured into moulds.

There must be a quota for international students.

UAE is a devil that has deep tentacles with its Hindutva partner India.

You guys should still count yourself lucky that the Abraham Accords haven't finalised yet. The Saudis and UAE are going to reveal their true colors after the finalisation of Abraham Accords. Pakistan will be cast aside.

Pakistani leaders are IMF beggars. Both the civilian and military rulers. When your entire existence depends on paying off debt there is little room for anything else.

Pakistan had a glimmer of hope with Imran Khan. Do you expect anything from PML-N and PPP? If you have any expectations from the current lot of course Pakistan has every chance of success. If not, the outcome is already written on the wall.
