How effective are 20mm sniper rifles really?

Might be my feed on facebook or whatever but I have been seeing a lot more 20mm sniper rifles recently. Many countries develop them and they are very heavy to carry around. How effective are they really? is it worth moving up from 50BMG to 20mm? Are they a gimmick ?

I can think of no reason for such a platform. The idea of shooting as a human target is ranges in excess of 2000 yards out to 3500 yards is filled with numerous challenges.

unless you can fire a homing round, this will be just a show piece.

Yeah i keep thinking they are good for hitting helicopters or car engine blocks etc but that can be done with armour piercing incendiary 50cal as well.

Maybe its just the intimidation factor to see the soldier next to u nearly cut in half by a massive round
