New reports suggest that Huawei Ascend AI chips have scored more than 50% market share compared to Nvidia. While the US chipmaker once held around 95%, it has now slipped to 8%. This shows a complete turnover in favor of Huawei.
The company mentioned that the Ascend chips took over Nvidia in China’s AI market at the 2026 Huawei Connect Conference. But it didn’t disclose the figure at that time.
According to new reports, Huawei Ascend AI semiconductors have garnered more attention in the past few months than Nvidia chipsets in the Chinese market.
In 2022, Nvidia accounted for a 95% share of China’s total AI market. Meanwhile, Ascend AI chips held only 3% market share following the US tech restrictions.
But the Chinese AI market witnessed a major change in the past four years, where Huawei made huge strides in Ascend chipset development and performance improvements. Another factor behind Huawei’s growth in the AI market is the US ban.
While the US sanctions have been stricter on Chinese companies since 2023, the requirement of export licenses for Nvidia and US chipmakers has severely cut off their growth. The authorities even showed a red flag to Nvidia for selling chips in China.
Huawei saw this gap as an opportunity for growth and introduced efficient as well as improved Ascend chips to the market, filling the void created by Nvidia and becoming the first choice for many Chinese clients.
As of now, Huawei is ready to introduce new Ascend AI chips in China, once again challenging Nvidia’s market share. You can check the company’s roadmap below.
