Huawei presents world's first tri-foldable smartphone, having more than 3 million preorders

So now we have video about the phone. What we know is :

1. Crease is very visble at least in some angles if not in some colors like off white but thats a minor thing because when unfolded you can not feel the crease.

2. Phone is indeed a bit heavy but thats okay its essentially a foldable tablet.

3. When fully unfolded its VERY thin. But then, its battery life also suffers and may not last whole day.

4. Folding screen is exposed and since it can not have any screen protector or a bumper protector, its screen can get damaged by fall much more easily, if it ends up hitting its side edge first.
It comes with a protector, dude. The side of the sceen is protected.

Apple Reacts to Huawei’s Triple Fold Phone

Huawei's tri-fold is in high demand, sales estimates rise by 100%

Featured image for Huawei's tri-fold is in high demand, sales estimates rise by 100%

Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone is in high demand, it seems, as sales estimates have risen by 100%. This information comes from a well-known analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo. The device in question is the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, by the way.

Sales estimates for Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone have risen by 100%

The company was expected to ship 500,000 units of the device. Well, now, the estimates have been revised to 1 million units for this year. Do note that the phone is China-exclusive, so we’re talking about China alone.

This phone managed to attract a lot of attention from all over the world despite the fact it launched in China only. There is hope it will arrive to more markets, though, as Huawei started teasing it via global social media channels.

This is also the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, by the way. It is available in China from CNY19,999 ($2,830). Which is, needless to say, a very high price tag for a smartphone. Still, tons of people seem to be interested.

It’s not even available just yet

It is also worth noting that it’s not even available to buy in China yet. It will go on sale tomorrow, September 20, though reservations have been available since the phone launched.

Both Xiaomi and HONOR seem to be working on their own tri-fold smartphones. So it’s only a matter of time until we see some competition for Huawei. It’s also worth noting that Huawei doesn’t have access to Google services, at least not officially, so that gives its competitors the edge globally.

This smartphone has a 10.2-inch 3K AMOLED display which can fold to two smaller form factors. Best of all, it’s only 12.8mm thick when fully folded, so it’s almost as thin as the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The device also has a very compelling camera setup, truly fast charging, and much more.

Huawei Mate XT price soars in unofficial channels, reported prices jumped to between CNY60,000 ($8,500) and CNY70,000 ($9,900)

Limited supplies of Huawei’s tri-fold Mate XT smartphone spurred prices to more than double or treble in Shenzhen ahead of its official availability tomorrow (20 September), as resellers took advantage of surging demand.

Portal Huawei Central reported prices jumped to between CNY60,000 ($8,500) and CNY70,000 in parts of the city bordering Hong Kong and online.

The official price starts at CNY19,999 for the version sporting 16GB of RAM and 512GB storage.

Some 6.3 million units were ordered at official VMall stores since 7 September, various Chinese news sites wrote.

The world’s first foldable with two hinges created a huge buzz in China, as Huawei emerged as a national champion for defying widening US trade sanctions for five years.

A Huawei source said off the record “everyone is crazy about the XT and it’s totally nuts here”.

Huawei boldly timed its launch event hours after Apple unveiled the iPhone 16, when accounting for international time zones.

In contrast to buoyant demand for the Mate XT, TF International Securities analyst Kuo Ming-Chi estimated iPhone 16 orders in the first weekend the process was opened were 12.7 per cent less than the iPhone 15 at 37 million units, with the figures based on a regular supply chain survey.

Radio Free Mobile founder Richard Windsor spectacled about the reason behind the steep price of the Mate XT, pointing to the use of the Kirin 9010 processor produced using a 7nm multi-patterning technique, which has a lower yield than the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process and so makes the finished chips more costly.

These are hardly deal breakers

It's the first phones that can genuinely double up as a phone and tablet, it looks beautifully executed

This will appeal to people who travel or commute a lot

I have literally not cared about apple for a decade

Huawei's trifold smartphone is launching the same day as the iPhone 16 — and it's already creating a frenzy on resale sites

  • Huawei's new smartphone is being listed on resale sites for three times its retail price.
  • The Mate XT will feature a tri-fold design and have generative AI features.
  • Huawei's launch will coincide with the launch of Apple's new iPhone 16 on Friday.
Online scalpers are looking to make a quick buck on the newest Huawei phone before it's released.

Huawei's new trifold smartphone, the Mate XT, is set to hit stores on Friday. The device was announced on September 10 and pulled in more than 2.7 million preorders within hours of the announcement.

People online have listed the phone for as much as 70,000 yuan, or over $9,900, Lin Shen, a secondhand smartphone dealer, told the South China Morning Post. That's far above its official retail price of 19,999 yuan to 23,999 yuan.

The phone will feature a tri-fold design, giving users up to 10.2 inches of screen space when fully unfolded, and functions including generative artificial intelligence and satellite communications.

Huawei's release coincides with Apple's latest launch. The iPhone 16 is set to be released in stores on Friday — the same day as the Mate XT. Apple's newest smartphone lineup will be priced from $799 for its standard model, up to $1,599 for its Pro Max model.

Some online sellers in China have begun slashing prices of the latest iPhone ahead of its release, the SCMP reported. On platforms like Pinduoduo, a budget shopping platform, the 512GB iPhone 16 Plus was offered at 8,999 yuan, a discount from its retail price of 9,999 yuan.

Apple faces stiff competition from Huawei, especially in China. Sales of iPhones in China slumped by 24% in the first six weeks of 2024, while Huawei experienced a 64% increase in sales in China during the same period, per Counterpoint Research.

While Huawei is winning the smartphone race on its home ground, Martin Yang, a senior analyst at Oppenheimer & Co, told CNBC on Tuesday that the Chinese tech giant lags behind industry leaders like Apple by two or three years in chip technology.

Huawei did not respond to requests for comment sent by Business Insider.

Huawei’s tri-fold price skyrockets to $10,000+ amid limited supply

Huawei’s new tri-fold, the Mate XT Ultimate, has caused quite a stir both in China and globally. Although it’s currently only available in its home market, getting one there is proving to be extremely difficult.

Since its launch earlier this month, demand for the foldable has skyrocketed, with reports now suggesting that scalpers in China are marking up prices by a huge 200-300%.

Huawei officially priced the 256GB Mate XT at 19,999 yuan (about $2,800), but folks in Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei, the world’s biggest electronics bazaar, are listing the phone for a whopping 60,000 to 70,000 yuan ($8,400-$9,800).

Lin Shen, a second-hand smartphone dealer in the district, said to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), that the “prices at still unstable,” with most interest coming from scalpers looking to capitalize on the limited supply.

Another Huaqiangbei dealer cautiously admitted that his final resale price will depend on whether he can secure a unit on launch day. Online marketplaces are also witnessing similar price gouging.

On Xianyu, Alibaba’s online flea market, prices for the Mate XT are fluctuating wildly, ranging from 30,000 yuan to a mind-boggling 100,000 yuan ($4,200 -$14,000), with many sellers promising same-day delivery.

This skyrocketing price tag comes as no surprise. Huawei’s Mate XT, touted as the world’s first commercially available tri-fold phone, has already racked up over 6.3 million reservations on their Vmall platform. However, these pre-orders don’t guarantee immediate purchase, leaving many scrambling for alternatives.

The inflated prices on the grey market suggest Huawei may have successfully stolen Apple’s thunder in China. While Huawei’s foldable sees prices soar, retailers across China have reportedly already slashed prices on the new iPhone 16 series ahead of its official release this Friday.

According to SCMP, the Chinese e-commerce platform Pinduoduo is selling the 512GB iPhone 16 Plus for 8,999 yuan, a 10% discount from its official price of 9,999 yuan. The 128GB iPhone 16 is available at an even steeper 11% discount.
