Tripura: Two suspected smugglers shot dead in alleged BSF firing
Agartala: According to multiple Bangladeshi media outlets, the Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly opened fire late on Friday night near the India-Bangladesh border in
Tripura‘s Sepahijala district, killing two Bangladeshi nationals.
The deceased were identified by
Bangladeshi media reports as Md Morsalin, 22, son of Hebju Mia from Dhajanagar Batanbari area under Gopinathpur union in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria district, and Nabir Hossain of Madhurpur.
Sources said the incident took place around 11.15 pm near the Dhajanagar border area adjoining the Kasba border in Bangladesh, allegedly inside Indian territory.
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), a group of around 15 Bangladeshi nationals had crossed into Indian territory with the help of Indian associates for smuggling activities.
The BGB alleged that while the group was returning with goods, they were intercepted by a patrol team of the BSF’s 49th Battalion from the Pathariadwar camp, following which firing took place.
Several other Bangladeshi nationals accompanying the group also sustained injuries and were shifted to Comilla for treatment, the reports said.
Hospital sources in Tripura said one body was brought to Bishalgarh subdivisional hospital from the Kamalasagar border area around 11.50 pm after the person sustained bullet injuries in alleged BSF firing.
The identity of the second deceased was not immediately confirmed by Indian authorities. Bangladeshi reports said he died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Shariful Islam, commanding officer of BGB’s 60th Battalion, told Bangladeshi media that the force was in contact with the BSF for repatriation of the bodies and would send a formal protest note over the incident.
The BGB also claimed the victims were allegedly involved in smuggling activities.
There was no official statement from the BSF on the incident till the filing of this report.
